Moving Beyond a Protective Approach to Stopping Sexual Violence of People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

    Get PDF
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) have some of the highest rates of sexual violence of any group—at least 7 times the rate for people without disabilities. (6) Attempts to alleviate this problem have been unsuccessful and based on the Medical Model of Disability, which views people with I/DD as inherently vulnerable and in need only of protection. Viewing people with I/DD as inherently vulnerable further stigmatizes them and increases dependency on others, instead of fostering capabilities and independence. Minnesota needs to move beyond taking a protective “recognize, report, and respond” approach, to taking a comprehensive approach to sexual violence prevention. We must invest in an array of Primary Prevention and Risk Reduction strategies to address the serious and pervasive problem of sexual violence perpetrated against children, adolescents, and adults with I/DD. Primary prevention and risk reduction need to start early with children and their caregivers in the places where they live, learn, and play to teach skills for self-advocacy, healthy relationships, distinguishing harmful caregiving from respectful caregiving, where to report crimes, and where to get help. We need to provide education and support self-determination through self-advocacy of people with I/DD as equal partners in our comprehensive approach. (2) We need to create change in cultural attitudes, norms, and policies to promote opportunity, freedom to make meaningful choice, inclusion, self-determination, and increased quality of life for all people with I/DD. Every person has a right to safety and a right to live their life free of sexual violence. At the forefront of Minnesota’s comprehensive approach must be the voices of people with I/DD

Objective: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common cause of sexual disorders in men with limited treatment options. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of low-intensity extra corporal shockwave therapy (LI-ESWT) in patients suffering from ED. Materials and methods: A single-group, pre-test, and post-test pre-experimental study were conducted. Thirty-one ED patients were prospectively selected according to the eligibility criteria. In each session, 3000 shocks were applied at 5 points over the penis. Eight sessions were delivered in total with a 2–3-day interval. The patient’s condition was assessed using the International Index of Electric Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire at baseline and one month after the last treatment session. Paired t-test was used to determine the difference between the pre-test and post-test. Results: Mean age of the patients was 44.6 (± 14.70) ranging from 25 to 78 years. The majority of them were married (83.9%) and service providers (51.6%). We have also found 51.6% overweight, 9.7% obese, 48.4% diabetic, 45.2% hypertensive, 12.9% with enlarged prostate, 45.2% smoker, 25.8% alcoholic, and 71% with sleep disturbances. During the pre-test, 9.7% had severe ED and 51.6% had moderate ED. After the treatment, no patients were found with severe ED, and few of them had moderate ED (9.7%). The mean difference in IIEF-5 score during the pre-test and post-test was statistically significant (p= < 0.001). Conclusion: The study showed efficacy of LI-ESWT in a subset of patients with ED. Future studies with larger sample size, placebo group, and longer follow-up periods are recommended

    Hamiltonian Formulation of the Supermembrane

    No full text
By replacing ten-dimensional pure spinors with eleven-dimensional pure spinors, the Hamiltonian formalism is developed for covariantly quantizing the d = 10 superparticle and superstring is extended to the d = 11 superparticle and supermembrane. The Hamiltonian formulation of the supermembrane theory in eleven dimensions is given by two approaches: The first is Dirac approach where the covariant is splited into primary and secondary class constraints is exhibited, and their Dirac brackets are constructed. The second is Guler Approach, (Hamilton-Jacobi) in which the equations of motion are obtained as total differenial equations in many variables without the need to distinguish between primary and secondary constraints. These equations of motion are in exact agreement with those equations that had been obtained using Dirac’s method

Gender (in)equality among employees in elder care : implications for health

    Get PDF
Introduction: Gendered practices of working life create gender inequalities through horizontal and vertical gender segregation in work, which may lead to inequalities in health between women and men. Gender equality could therefore be a key element of health equity in working life. Our aim was to analyze what gender (in) equality means for the employees at a woman-dominated workplace and discuss possible implications for health experiences. Methods: All caregiving staff at two workplaces in elder care within a municipality in the north of Sweden were invited to participate in the study. Forty-five employees participated, 38 women and 7 men. Seven focus group discussions were performed and led by a moderator. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the focus groups. Results: We identified two themes. "Advocating gender equality in principle" showed how gender (in) equality was seen as a structural issue not connected to the individual health experiences. "Justifying inequality with individualism" showed how the caregivers focused on personalities and interests as a justification of gender inequalities in work division. The justification of gender inequality resulted in a gendered work division which may be related to health inequalities between women and men. Gender inequalities in work division were primarily understood in terms of personality and interests and not in terms of gender. Conclusion: The health experience of the participants was affected by gender (in) equality in terms of a gendered work division. However, the participants did not see the gendered work division as a gender equality issue. Gender perspectives are needed to improve the health of the employees at the workplaces through shifting from individual to structural solutions. A healthy-setting approach considering gender relations is needed to achieve gender equality and fairness in health status between women and men

Instruction effects in implicit artificial grammar learning: a preference for grammaticality

    No full text
Human implicit learning can be investigated with implicit artificial grammar learning, a paradigm that has been proposed as a simple model for aspects of natural language acquisition. In the present study we compared the typical yes-no grammaticality classification, with yes-no preference classification. in the case of preference instruction no reference to the underlying generative mechanism (i.e., grammar) is needed and the subjects are therefore completely uninformed about an underlying structure in the acquisition material. in experiment 1, subjects engaged in a short-term memory task using only grammatical strings without performance feedback for 5 days. As a result of the 5 acquisition days, classification performance was independent of instruction type and both the preference and the grammaticality group acquired relevant knowledge of the underlying generative mechanism to a similar degree. Changing the grammatical stings to random strings in the acquisition material (experiment 2) resulted in classification being driven by local substring familiarity. Contrasting repeated vs. non-repeated preference classification (experiment 3) showed that the effect of local substring familiarity decreases with repeated classification. This was not the case for repeated grammaticality classifications. We conclude that classification performance is largely independent of instruction type and that forced-choice preference classification is equivalent to the typical grammaticality classification.
