A Spin-Isospin Dependent 3N Scattering Formalism in a 3D Faddeev Scheme
We have introduced a spin-isospin dependent three-dimensional approach for
formulation of the three-nucleon scattering. Faddeev equation is expressed in
terms of vector Jacobi momenta and spin-isospin quantum numbers of each
nucleon. Our formalism is based on connecting the transition amplitude to
momentum-helicity representations of the two-body -matrix and the deuteron
wave function. Finally the expressions for nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering
and full breakup process amplitudes are presented.Comment: 17 page

Positivity of Entropy in the Semi-Classical Theory of Black Holes and Radiation
Quantum stress-energy tensors of fields renormalized on a Schwarzschild
background violate the classical energy conditions near the black hole.
Nevertheless, the associated equilibrium thermodynamical entropy by
which such fields augment the usual black hole entropy is found to be positive.
More precisely, the derivative of with respect to radius, at fixed
black hole mass, is found to vanish at the horizon for {\it all} regular
renormalized stress-energy quantum tensors. For the cases of conformal scalar
fields and U(1) gauge fields, the corresponding second derivative is positive,
indicating that has a local minimum there. Explicit calculation
shows that indeed increases monotonically for increasing radius and
is positive. (The same conclusions hold for a massless spin 1/2 field, but the
accuracy of the stress-energy tensor we employ has not been confirmed, in
contrast to the scalar and vector cases). None of these results would hold if
the back-reaction of the radiation on the spacetime geometry were ignored;
consequently, one must regard as arising from both the radiation
fields and their effects on the gravitational field. The back-reaction, no
matter how "small",Comment: 19 pages, RevTe
Effective Potential of a Black Hole in Thermal Equilibrium with Quantum Fields
Expectation values of one-loop renormalized thermal equilibrium stress-energy
tensors of free conformal scalars, spin- fermions and U(1) gauge
fields on a Schwarzschild black hole background are used as sources in the
semi-classical Einstein equation. The back-reaction and new equilibrium metric
are solved for at for each spin field. The nature of the modified
black hole spacetime is revealed through calculations of the effective
potential for null and timelike orbits. Significant novel features affecting
the motions of both massive and massless test particles show up at lowest order
in , where is the renormalized black hole mass,
and is the Planck mass. Specifically, we find the tendency for
\underline{stable} circular photon orbits, an increase in the black hole
capture cross sections, and the existence of a gravitationally repulsive region
associated with the black hole which is generated from the U(1) back-reaction.
We also consider the back-reaction arising from multiple fields, which will be
useful for treating a black hole in thermal equilibrium with field ensembles
belonging to gauge theories.Comment: 25 pages (not including seven figures), VAND-TH-93-6. Typed in Latex,

A New Treatment of 2N and 3N Bound States in Three Dimensions
The direct treatment of the Faddeev equation for the three-boson system in 3
dimensions is generalized to nucleons. The one Faddeev equation for identical
bosons is replaced by a strictly finite set of coupled equations for scalar
functions which depend only on 3 variables. The spin-momentum dependence
occurring as scalar products in 2N and 3N forces accompanied by scalar
functions is supplemented by a corresponding expansion of the Faddeev
amplitudes. After removing the spin degrees of freedom by suitable operations
only scalar expressions depending on momenta remain. The corresponding steps
are performed for the deuteron leading to two coupled equations.Comment: 19 page
3N Scattering in a Three-Dimensional Operator Formulation
A recently developed formulation for a direct treatment of the equations for
two- and three-nucleon bound states as set of coupled equations of scalar
functions depending only on vector momenta is extended to three-nucleon
scattering. Starting from the spin-momentum dependence occurring as scalar
products in two- and three-nucleon forces together with other scalar functions,
we present the Faddeev multiple scattering series in which order by order the
spin-degrees can be treated analytically leading to 3D integrations over scalar
functions depending on momentum vectors only. Such formulation is especially
important in view of awaiting extension of 3N Faddeev calculations to
projectile energies above the pion production threshold and applications of
chiral perturbation theory 3N forces, which are to be most efficiently treated
directly in such three-dimensional formulation without having to expand these
forces into a partial wave basis.Comment: 25 pages, 0 figure
Controls on microalgal community structures in cryoconite holes upon high Arctic glaciers, Svalbard
Glaciers are known to harbor surprisingly complex ecosystems. On their surface, distinct cylindrical holes filled with meltwater and sediments are considered as hot spots for microbial life. The present paper addresses possible biological interactions within the community of prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic microalgae (microalgae) and relations to their potential grazers, additional to their environmental controls. Svalbard glaciers with substantial allochthonous input of material from local sources reveal high microalgal densities. Small valley glaciers with high sediment coverages and high impact of birds show high biomasses and support a high biological diversity. Invertebrate grazer densities do not show any significant negative correlation with microalgal abundances, but a positive correlation with eukaryotic microalgae. Most microalgae found in this study form large colonies ( 25 ÎĽm), which may protect them against invertebrate grazing. This finding rather indicates grazing as a positive control on eukaryotic microalgae by nutrient recycling. Density differences between the eukaryotic microalgae and prokaryotic cyanobacteria and their high distinction in RDA and PCA analyses indicate that these two groups are in strong contrast. Eukaryotic microalgae occurred mainly in unstable cryoconite holes with high sediment loads, high N : P ratios, and a high impact of bird guano, as a proxy for nutrients. In these environments autochthonous nitrogen fixation appears to be negligible. Selective wind transport of Oscillatoriales via soil and dust particles is proposed to explain their dominance in cryoconites further away from the glacier margins. We propose that, for the studied glaciers, nutrient levels related to recycling of limiting nutrients is the main factor driving variation in the community structure of microalgae and grazers
Toy Model for Pion Production II: The role of three-particle singularities
The influence of three-particle breakup singularities on s-wave meson
production in nucleon-nucleon collisions is studied within the distorted wave
Born approximation. This study is based on a simple scalar model for the
two-nucleon interaction and the production mechanism. An algorithm for the
exact numerical treatment of the inherent three-body cuts, together with its
straightforward implementation is presented. It is also shown that two
often-used approximations to avoid the calculation of the three-body breakup
are not justified. The possible impact on pion production observables is
discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
First Order Relativistic Three-Body Scattering
Relativistic Faddeev equations for three-body scattering at arbitrary
energies are formulated in momentum space and in first order in the two-body
transition-operator directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without
employing a partial wave decomposition. Relativistic invariance is incorporated
within the framework of Poincare invariant quantum mechanics, and presented in
some detail.
Based on a Malfliet-Tjon type interaction, observables for elastic and
break-up scattering are calculated up to projectile energies of 1 GeV. The
influence of kinematic and dynamic relativistic effects on those observables is
systematically studied. Approximations to the two-body interaction embedded in
the three-particle space are compared to the exact treatment.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figure
