One or more sensors coupled to the safety harness sense tension therein and generate a signal indicative of the tension.     A system is provided to control the environment experienced by a child in a child safety seat. Each of a plurality of thermoelectric elements is individually controllable to be one of heated and cooled relative to an ambient temperature. A first portion of the thermoelectric elements are positioned on the child safety seat such that a child sitting therein is positioned thereover. A ventilator coupled to the child safety seat moves air past a second portion of the thermoelectric elements and filters the air moved therepast. One or more jets coupled to the ventilator receive the filtered air. Each jet is coupled to the child safety seat and can be positioned to direct the heated/cooled filtered air to the vicinity of the head of the child sitting in the child safety seat

    Biogeography of Arkansas Mammals with Notes on Species of Questionable Status

    Seventy-one native or re-introduced species of mammals were analyzed with respect to their geographical distributions and relationships to the four broad physiographical regions of Arkansas. Mammalian diversity in the Ozark Mountains, Ouachita Mountains/ Arkansas River Valley, Gulf Coastal Plain, and Mississippi Alluvial Plain/Crowley\u27s Ridge was not area dependent. The majority of mammalian species (44) occurs statewide with the greatest diversity in the interior highland regions. The Ozark Mountains contain the most species endemic to an area. Thirteen species which are of questionable status in Arkansas are discussed. The presence of the plains pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius), a second species of pocket gopher in Arkansas, is noted. New distributional maps for the desert shrew (Notiosorex crawfordi) and small-footed bat (Myotisleibii)are presented

    In vitro culture with gemcitabine augments death receptor and NKG2D ligand expression on tumour cells

    Much effort has been made to try to understand the relationship between chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer and the immune system. Whereas much of that focus has been on the direct effect of chemotherapy drugs on immune cells and the release of antigens and danger signals by malignant cells killed by chemotherapy, the effect of chemotherapy on cells surviving treatment has often been overlooked. In the present study, tumour cell lines: A549 (lung), HCT116 (colon) and MCF-7 (breast), were treated with various concentrations of the chemotherapeutic drugs cyclophosphamide, gemcitabine (GEM) and oxaliplatin (OXP) for 24 hours in vitro. In line with other reports, GEM and OXP upregulated expression of the death receptor CD95 (fas) on live cells even at sub-cytotoxic concentrations. Further investigation revealed that the increase in CD95 in response to GEM sensitised the cells to fas ligand treatment, was associated with increased phosphorylation of stress activated protein kinase/c-Jun N-terminal kinase and that other death receptors and activatory immune receptors were co-ordinately upregulated with CD95 in certain cell lines. The upregulation of death receptors and NKG2D ligands together on cells after chemotherapy suggest that although the cells have survived preliminary treatment with chemotherapy they may now be more susceptible to immune cell-mediated challenge. This re-enforces the idea that chemotherapy-immunotherapy combinations may be useful clinically and has implications for the make-up and scheduling of such treatments

    Shelf-derived iron inputs drive biological productivity in the southern Drake Passage

The definitive version was published in Global Biogeochemical Cycles 23 (2009): GB4014, doi:10.1029/2008GB003406.In the Southern Ocean near the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) fronts interact with shelf waters facilitating lateral transport of shelf-derived components such as iron into high-nutrient offshore regions. To trace these shelf-derived components and estimate lateral mixing rates of shelf water, we used naturally occurring radium isotopes. Short-lived radium isotopes were used to quantify the rates of shelf water entrainment while Fe/228Ra ratios were used to calculate the Fe flux. In the summer of 2006 we found rapid mixing and significant lateral iron export, namely, a dissolved iron flux of 1.1 × 105 mol d−1 and total acid leachable iron flux of 1.1 × 106 mol d−1 all of which is transported in the mixed layer from the shelf region offshore. This dissolved iron flux is significant, especially considering that the bloom observed in the offshore region (0.5–2 mg chl a m−3) had an iron demand of 1.1 to 4 × 105 mol Fe. Net vertical export fluxes of particulate Fe derived from 234Th/238U disequilibrium and Fe/234Th ratios accounted for only about 25% of the dissolved iron flux. On the other hand, vertical upward mixing of iron rich deeper waters provided only 7% of the lateral dissolved iron flux. We found that similarly to other studies in iron-fertilized regions of the Southern Ocean, lateral fluxes overwhelm vertical inputs and vertical export from the water column and support significant phytoplankton blooms in the offshore regions of the Drake Passage.This work was funded by the National Science Foundation (ANT-0443869 to M.A.C.)

    Alongshore variability of the California Current System from Central to Baja California in winter and spring 2003, physical, chemical and biological properties

    Poster.-- American Society of Limnology and Oceanography and the Oceanography Society, Honolulu, Hawaii (USA), 15-20 febrero 2004Sixteen stations along the continental slope of western North America were occupied in February 18-27 and May 22-31, 2003, and form a meridional section from Monterey Bay, California (37º N, 122º W) to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (23º N, 110º W). Our purpose was to compare trends in California Current (CC), Inshore Countercurrent (ICC) and California Undercurrent (CUC) properties with latitude, and between winter and spring conditions. In winter, coastal upwelling was near zero and the along-transect dynamic height was high and flat, allowing the ICC to advect tropical properties northward. In spring, coastal upwelling had commenced and surface flow along the transect presumably became equatorward. As a consequence of these dynamics, in winter the thermocline was deeper, SST was higher, macronutrients, chlorophyll and primary production were low along the entire transect, with most properties lacking strong latitudinal trends. In spring, the thermocline, macronutrients, chlorophyll and primary production rose along the entire section but most dramatically in the north where upwelling was stronger. Prochlorophytes and other small open-ocean phytoplankton were more abundant in winter along the entire transect and to the south in spring, whereas diatoms, a characteristic coastal group of phytoplankton, were more abundant in spring and in the north. Surface iron was higher in the north in winter, but lower there in spring, presumably reflecting drawdown by diatoms.
