    A cross-cultural analysis of popularizations in English and Spanish newspaper discourse

    Se ha realizado un análisis contrastivo de dos noticias de divulgación científica publicadas en el Guardian y en El País sobre el mismo hallazgo científico. El objetivo del análisis era estudiar cómo se produce la (re)contextualización de la información científica en los medios de comunicación escritos de diferentes culturas. Tras un análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo, los resultados muestran que, a pesar de que la dimensión contextual es similar, la noticiabilidad se obtiene mediante estrategias de organización textual y atribución diferentes en cada caso, que podrían relacionarse con diferencias de tipo cultural en las expectativas de cada grupo de lectores. Los resultados también indican que las comparaciones transculturales pueden poner de relieve características de los artículos de divulgación científica que no se manifiestan cuando éstos son tratados como meras traducciones entre distintos géneros científicos, por lo que se concluye que los análisis comparativos de este tipo pueden ayudar a evitar la simplificación cuando los artículos de divulgación científica se estudian como parte integral del proceso de construcción del conocimiento científico.A cross-cultural analysis has been carried out for two news articles from the Guardia¡¡ and El País respectively, both reporting the same scientific finding. The aim was to study how the same event is (re)contextualised in two different languages and cultures through written media. After analyzing the contextual, structural, and inter-personal dimensions quantitatively and qualitatively, the results show that, even if the contextual dimension is similar, newsworthiness is achieved by means of different structural and interpersonal strategies (text organization and attribution) which could be linked to cultural differences in readers' expectations. The results also suggest that cross-cultural comparisons can account for features of popularizations which are not revealed when interpreting them as mere translations between scientific genres. It is therefore concluded that cross-cultural analyses of popularizations may help to avoid an oversimplification in the study of popularizations as an integral part of the process of scientific knowledge construction

    Constructing stance by means of attribution How is the ‘evaluative space’ filled in science popularizations in English?

    [EN]This chapter presents a study on the relation between the introduction of authorial voices in science popularization articles and the construction of the journalists’ stance. Science popularizations are polyphonic texts which, similarly to other media genres, are typically constructed by relying on other voices apart from the journalist’s. When an external voice is being introduced in the text, there is a transition area between the voice which was speaking so far and the new voice. In this chapter it is claimed that this transition area functions as an evaluative space which can be potentially used by journalists to include their own stance towards the information presented. In order to support and illustrate this, we present an analysis of some of the elements in the evaluative spaces which are found when journalists introduce authorized sources by means of direct speech constructions in popularizations in the British press. Our results show that journalists of these texts construct their stance by two different means, either overtly through the use of reporting verbs and evaluative expressions, or covertly by blurring the boundaries between their voices and the voices from experts

    Cryopreservation of unrelated donor hematopoietic stem cells: the right answer for transplantations during the COVID-19 pandemic?

    Cryopreservation was recommended to ensure continuity of unrelated donor (UD) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) during COVID-19 pandemic. However, its impact on clinical outcomes and feasibility was not well known. We compared 32 patients who underwent UD HSCT using cryopreserved peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) during the COVID-19 pandemic with 32 patients who underwent UD HSCT using fresh PBSC in the previous period. Median neutrophil engraftment was 17.5 and 17.0 days with cryopreserved and fresh grafts, respectively. Non-significant delays were found in platelet recovery days (25.5 versus 19.0; P = 0.192) and full donor chimerism days (35.0 and 31.5; P = 0.872) using cryopreserved PBSC. The rate of acute graft-versus-host disease at 100 days was 41% (95% CI [21-55%]) in cryopreserved group versus 31% (95% CI [13-46%]) in fresh group (P = 0.380). One-hundred days progression-relapse free survival and overall survival did not differ significantly. During COVID-19 pandemic, six frozen UD donations were not transfused and logistical and clinical issues regarding cryopreservation procedure, packaging, and transporting appeared. In summary, UD HSCT with cryopreserved PBSC was safe during this challenging time. More efforts are needed to ensure that all frozen grafts are transplanted and cryopreservation requirements are harmonized
