    On the rigidity of back-to-back top quark pairs in e^+e^- annihilation

    We consider the effect of gluon radiation on the energy of top/antitop quarks and on the anticollinearity of top-antitop quark pairs produced in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation. Our results are presented in terms of the EqE_q-dependence of the ttˉgt\bar tg cross section and the dependence on the cosine of the opening angle ξ12\theta_{12} between top and antitop for a center of mass energy of q2=500GeV\sqrt{q^2}=500 GeV. We then go on to determine mean values for the top quark's energy as well as its longitudinal and transverse projections, and for the deviation of sin⁡ξ12\sin\theta_{12} and cos⁡ξ12\cos\theta_{12} from the anticollinearity limits sin⁡ξ12=0\sin\theta_{12}=0 and cos⁡ξ12=−1\cos\theta_{12}=-1. For a center of mass energy of 500GeV500 GeV we obtain =248.22GeV=248.22 GeV, =247.24GeV=247.24 GeV and =4.70GeV=4.70 GeV. Thus, at this energy gluon radiation causes a total average energy loss of 0.71% of the top quark's energy. The average energy loss in the longitudinal direction is 1.06% and the average energy gain in the transverse direction is 1.88%. These percentage figures go up to 3.77%, 5.19% and 6.06%, respectively, at 1000\GeV. For the mean of the acollinearity angle ξˉ12=1800−ξ12\bar\theta_{12}=180^0-\theta_{12} we obtain =1.250=1.25^0 at 500GeV500 GeV, the value of which goes up to 4.6204.62^0 at 1000GeV1000 GeV. From an analysis of the transverse momentum of the top we find that the mean transverse momentum of the top stays close to the mean total momentum of the gluon in the energy range from threshold to 1000GeV1000 GeV showing that the gluon momentum has a large mean transverse component in this energy range.Comment: 17 pages, 7 postscript figures, to appear in Nucl.     An evaluation of the efficacy of the exercise on referral scheme in Northumberland, UK: association with physical activity and predictors of engagement. A naturalistic observation study

    Objectives Exercise on referral schemes (ERS) are widely commissioned in the UK but there is little evidence of their association with physical activity levels. We sought to assess the Northumberland exercise on referral scheme in terms of increased levels of physical activity and identify predictors of engagement. Design A naturalistic observational study. Setting 9 local authority leisure sites in Northumberland. Participants 2233 patients referred from primary and secondary care between July 2009 and September 2010. Intervention A 24-week programme including motivational consultations and supervised exercise sessions for participants. Outcome measures Uptake, 12-week adherence, 24-week completion, changes in Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire scores after 24-weeks and attendance levels at supervised exercise sessions during the scheme. Three binary logistic regressions were used to examine demographic and referral factors associated with initial uptake, 12-week adherence and 24-week completion. Results Uptake was 81% (n=1811), 12-week adherence was 53.5% (n=968) and 24-week completion was 42.9% (n=777). Participants who completed significantly increased their self-reported physical activity levels at 24-weeks t (638)=−11.55, p<0.001. Completers attended a mean of 22.87 (12.47 SD) of a target 48 supervised sessions. Increasing age, being female and leisure site were associated with uptake, increasing age, Index of Multiple Deprivation and leisure site were associated with 12-week adherence and Body Mass Index and leisure site were associated with 24-week completion. Each regression significantly increased the prediction accuracy of stage of exit (non-starters vs starters 81.5%, dropouts before 12 weeks vs 12-week adherers 66.9%, and dropouts between 13 and 24 weeks 82.2%). Conclusions Completers of the Northumberland ERS increased physical activity at 24 weeks, although the levels achieved were below the current UK guidelines of 150 min of moderate exercise per week.     Determining the CP-eigenvalues of the Neutral Higgs Bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Model in \gam\gam Collisions

    We determine the optimal laser and \ep/\em energies and polarizations for {\it directly} determining the CP eigenvalue of each of the neutral Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Model via measurement of transverse polarization cross section asymmetry in back-scattered laser photon collisions.     Effects of quantum space time foam in the neutrino sector

    We discuss violations of CPT and quantum mechanics due to interactions of neutrinos with space-time quantum foam. Neutrinoless double beta decay and oscillations of neutrinos from astrophysical sources (supernovae, active galactic nuclei) are analysed. It is found that the propagation distance is the crucial quantity entering any bounds on EHNS parameters. Thus, while the bounds from neutrinoless double beta decay are not significant, the data of the supernova 1987a imply a bound being several orders of magnitude more stringent than the ones known from the literature. Even more stringent limits may be obtained from the investigation of neutrino oscillations from active galactic nuclei sources, which have an impressive potential for the search of quantum foam interactions in the neutrino sector.Comment: 5 page

    Spin-dependent Parton Distributions from Polarized Structure Function Data

    In the past year, polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments at CERN and SLAC have obtained structure function measurements off proton, neutron and deuteron targets at a level of precision never before achieved. The measurements can be used to test the Bjorken and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules, and also to obtain information on the parton distributions in polarized nucleons. We perform a global leading-order QCD fit to the proton deep inelastic data in order to extract the spin-dependent parton distributions. By using parametric forms which are consistent with theoretical expectations at large and small xx, we find that the quark distributions are now rather well constrained. We assume that there is no significant intrinsic polarization of the strange quark sea. The data are then consistent with a modest amount of the proton's spin carried by the gluon, although the shape of the gluon distribution is not well constrained, and several qualitatively different shapes are suggested. The spin-dependent distributions we obtain can be used as input to phenomenological studies for future polarized hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron colliders.Comment: 23 pages, DTP/94/3

    Perturbative relations between e+e−e^+e^- annihilation and τ\tau decay observables including resummation effects

    By exploiting the analyticity properties of the two-point current-current correlator we obtain numerical predictions for the e+e−e^+e^- moments in terms of the τ\tau decay rate. We perform a partial resummation of the pertinent perturbative series expansion by solving the renormalization group equation for Adler's function. Our predictions are renormalization scheme independent but depend on the order of the perturbative ÎČ\beta-function expansion. The analysis involves the unknown five-loop coefficient k3k_3 for which we give some new estimates.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, 2 postscript figure
