Double Charge Exchange And Configuration Mixing
The energy dependence of forward pion double charge exchange reactions on
light nuclei is studied for both the Ground State transition and the
Double-Isobaric-Analog-State transitions. A common characteristic of these
double reactions is a resonance-like peak around 50 MeV pion lab energy. This
peak arises naturally in a two-step process in the conventional pion-nucleon
system with proper handling of nuclear structure and pion distortion. A
comparison among the results of different nuclear structure models demonstrates
the effects of configuration mixing. The angular distribution is used to fix

Portrait of a people: the Jewish Heritage Collection dedicated to Mark and Dave Harris
The Jewish Heritage Collection was a gift made jointly to the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies and the University Library, which aptly reflects the comprehensive and unique nature of this collection. This collection combines materials traditionally found in libraries (e.g., books, pamphlets, printed ephemera, and manuscripts) with objects of museum quality (artwork and historical artifacts) and an assortment of items of humbler nature used in everyday life. The curators have chosen several themes around which to organize the display, in order to demonstrate both interesting items from the collection and topics for study it can easily support. Um levantamento preliminar de viroses de plantas cultivadas nos arredores de Manaus foi feito em março de 1977. Diversas propriedades particulares e campos experimentais foram inspecionados, anotando-se as plantas exibindo sintomatologia suspeita. A verificação da sua possível etiologia viral foi feita através de testes de transmissão, serologia e exames electrono microscópicos. Foram constatadas diversas viroses em tomateiro, pimentão, quiabeiro, feijoeiro, cucurbitáceas, soja, feijão-de-asa, milho. etc. Como regra geral, ao contrário do que sucede no Sul do País, as viroses transmitidas por afídeos foram de ocorrência rara, presumivelmente porque as condições climáticas da região seriam desfavoráveis à biologia desses insetos
Crew Procedures for Continuous Descent Arrivals Using Conventional Guidance
This paper presents results from a simulation study which investigated the use of Continuous Descent Arrival (CDA) procedures for conducting a descent through a busy terminal area, using conventional transport-category automation. This research was part of the Low Noise Flight Procedures (LNFP) element within the Quiet Aircraft Technology (QAT) Project, that addressed development of flight guidance, and supporting pilot and Air Traffic Control (ATC) procedures for low noise operations. The procedures and chart were designed to be easy to understand, and to make it easy for the crew to make changes via the Flight Management Computer Control-Display Unit (FMC-CDU) to accommodate changes from ATC. The test runs were intended to represent situations typical of what exists in many of today's terminal areas, including interruptions to the descent in the form of clearances issued by ATC
Nucleosynthesis in the Early Galaxy
Recent observations of r-process-enriched metal-poor star abundances reveal a
non-uniform abundance pattern for elements . Based on non-correlation
trends between elemental abundances as a function of Eu-richness in a large
sample of metal-poor stars, it is shown that the mixing of a consistent and
robust light element primary process (LEPP) and the r-process pattern found in
r-II metal-poor stars explains such apparent non-uniformity. Furthermore, we
derive the abundance pattern of the LEPP from observation and show that it is
consistent with a missing component in the solar abundances when using a recent
s-process model. As the astrophysical site of the LEPP is not known, we explore
the possibility of a neutron capture process within a site-independent
approach. It is suggested that scenarios with neutron densities
or in the range best

Pregnancy in the female athlete - Part 1: antenatal
As female participation in sport and exercise continues to increase, there is a strong likelihood that a strength and conditioning (S&C) coach will work with a pregnant athlete. High profile athletes such as Serena Williams and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill have shown recently that it is not uncommon for female athletes to become mothers during their careers, rather than after they have retired. However, historically pregnancy was perceived as time spent away from sport and being active was wrongly associated with a high, unreasonable risk to the unborn foetus. The challenge for the S&C coach working with pregnant athletes is navigating the wide range of global recommendations that are often aimed at active or inactive individuals, but not at elite athletes. It is fundamental that any coach working with pregnant athletes is knowledgeable about the physiological and anatomical changes that occur throughout the trimesters, the nutritional demands of pregnancy, and its effect on weight management in order to appropriately facilitate athlete and foetal health during the antenatal period. Therefore, the aim of this initial review is to summarise current literature and provide key insights that promote best practice for practitioners working with pregnant athletes. The use of ‘women’ throughout this paper will refer to the general population and ‘sportswomen’ to the athletic population. ‘Antenatal’ refers to a pregnant woman before childbirth and the term ‘postnatal’ means after childbirth, something which will be covered in part 2 of this review series

A connection between stress and development in the multicelular prokaryote Streptomyces coelicolor
Morphological changes leading to aerial mycelium formation and sporulation in the mycelial bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor rely on establishing distinct patterns of gene expression in separate regions of the colony. sH was identified previously as one of three paralogous sigma factors associated with stress responses in S. coelicolor. Here, we show that sigH and the upstream gene prsH (encoding a putative antisigma factor of sH) form an operon transcribed from two developmentally regulated promoters, sigHp1 and sigHp2. While sigHp1 activity is confined to the early phase of growth, transcription of sigHp2 is dramatically induced at the time of aerial hyphae formation. Localization of sigHp2 activity using a transcriptional fusion to the green fluorescent protein reporter gene (sigHp2–egfp) showed that sigHp2 transcription is spatially restricted to sporulating aerial hyphae in wild-type S. coelicolor. However, analysis of mutants unable to form aerial hyphae (bld mutants) showed that sigHp2 transcription and sH protein levels are dramatically upregulated in a bldD mutant, and that the sigHp2–egfp fusion was expressed ectopically in the substrate mycelium in the bldD background. Finally, a protein possessing sigHp2 promoter-binding activity was purified to homogeneity from crude mycelial extracts of S. coelicolor and shown to be BldD. The BldD binding site in the sigHp2 promoter was defined by DNase I footprinting. These data show that expression of sH is subject to temporal and spatial regulation during colony development, that this tissue-specific regulation is mediated directly by the developmental transcription factor BldD and suggest that stress and developmental programmes may be intimately connected in Streptomyces morphogenesis
Systematic and Causal Corrections to the Coherent Potential Approximation
The Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) is modified to include disorder.
The DCA incorporates non-local corrections to local approximations such as the
Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) by mapping the lattice problem with
disorder, and in the thermodynamic limit, to a self-consistently embedded
finite-sized cluster problem. It satisfies all of the characteristics of a
successful cluster approximation. It is causal, preserves the point-group and
translational symmetry of the original lattice, recovers the CPA when the
cluster size equals one, and becomes exact as . We use the DCA to
study the Anderson model with binary diagonal disorder. It restores sharp
features and band tailing in the density of states which reflect correlations
in the local environment of each site. While the DCA does not describe the
