Purpose: Evaluation of the level of satisfaction and capacity, efficiency and masticatory performance in edentulous patients at 5 different times: old complete dentures; at installation day with the new complete dentures; after 2 weeks; 1 month and 3 months of usage. Materials and methods: Satisfaction level and masticatory capacity were analyzed using a questionnaire for edentulous patients, while the masticatory efficiency and performance were evaluated using tests performed on artificial chewable material. The patients triturated the material for 20 and 40 seconds (efficiency) and 40 chewing cycles (performance) and the fragments were separated using a system of sieves. Tests were performed in seven volunteers. Data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS 13.0. Results: In masticatory efficiency test with 20 s, there was a decrease in the average particle size from 8.33 mm to 6.37 mm. The same occurred for masticatory efficiency test with 40 s (7.09 to 5.12 mm) and for masticatory performance with 40 cycles (6.48 to 4.52 mm). Data from the questionnaires showed an increase in the satisfaction level of 43.99% to 95.5%, as in the masticatory capacity of 42.31% to 94.51%. Conclusion: The new rehabilitation increased efficiency and masticatory performance, as well as satisfaction and chewing abilit

Prosthetic rehabilitation of an adult cleft lip and palate patient: A clinical report

    Get PDF
Several functional and morphological aspects may be damaged and require intervention by an interdisciplinary team at the appropriate time for achievement of integral rehabilitation in cleft lip and palate patients. In addition to esthetics, attention to a cleft patient’s psychological health is also important, especially as a result of difficulties in communication and need for integration in society. This study relates a patient case with 40 years old and presenting cleft palate. A teeth supported-overdenture prosthesis was fabricated for replacement of missing teeth and also for cleft palate obturation

A Simple Procedure for Oral Rehabilitation in a Complex Accident Injury: A Case Report

The use of a removable partial prosthesis is an effective treatment modality in the reconstruction of large maxillary defects, because it provides adequate support for the soft tissue and improves facial contours. Oral functions, such as speech and swallowing, also benefit from the use of removable partial prostheses. Osseointegrated implants are generally not indicated due to systemic factors, lack of bone anchorage, very long treatment times, and high costs. Therefore, the use of a removable partial prosthesis has been proposed as an alternative because of its relatively short treatment time, especially in patients undergoing successive bone- and soft tissue-grafting procedures. This report describes the use of an obturator prosthesis for the prosthetic rehabilitation of a maxillectomy patient with fractures due to a motorcycle accident

Alveolar Bone Loss: A Shorter-Time Study Model in Mice

Mucoperiosteal flap surgery (MPS) of the mouth is conducted in several clinical situations. However, MPS  triggers a resorption process that leads to alveolar bone ridge loss. Rodents are routinely used in studies  evaluating alveolar bone loss (ABL), and the experimental time involved in these experiments is usually 21  days. This study aims at establishing whether the alveolar bone resorption area differs between 10 and 21  days after MPS in mice mandibles. MPS was performed in the vestibular aspect of the left mandible (LM)  of 20 male CF1 mice Mus domesticus. The right mandible (RM) was used as control. Animals formed identical  groups for each experimental time. Animals were euthanized 10 days (ten days group, TG) or 21 days  (twenty one days group, TWG) after the surgical procedure. All mandibles were hemisectioned, cleaned and  stained for stereomicroscopic inspection. Digital images were obtained and the alveolar bone loss area measured  (mm2) using image analysis software. The results demonstrate that a significant loss is observed in the  left mandible (LM) (Student’s t test, p<0.01), as compared to the RM, in both groups. No statistically significant  difference was observed in the ABL area (p>0.05) between TWG and TG. This investigation leads  to the conclusion that it is possible to reduce experimental times when using the MPS model in mice.

This paper is a review of soft lining materials, including their development, clinical indications, ideal properties and limitations. Although their limitations are emphatic in this review, these materials do play a very useful role in Dentistry. In the construction of a vencer crown in the standar manner, it is sometimes difficult to hide the metal collar and keep from being obtrusive if the gingival cevice is shallow and the patient has a high sipline. The metal color will be notice able also when there is considerable cecession hround periodontally involved teeth if the preparation is finished at the cemento enamael junction. A method of construction has been comprented to solve this esthetic problem
