Leaky-Wave antennas with arbitrary radiation based on bianisotropic Huygens’ metasurfaces

    Get PDF
In this contribution, we present the application of Huygens’ metasurfaces (HMS) to the arbitrary design of leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). These metasurfaces have demonstrated their capabiity to tailor the electromagnetic waves at will. We use them to design LWAs consisting on a parallel-plate waveguide in which the top cover is replaced by a HMS, which implements the desired field transformation. By introducing bianisotropy of the omega type into the metasurface, we have the required degrees of freedom to achieve arbitrary control of the LWA radiation parameters: leakage factor and pointing angle (phase constant). The theoretical derivation of the concept and the design methodology will be described. Moreover, the flexibility in the design will be highlighted with results of two examples of broadside radiation with different directivities.

    Get PDF

Application of Huygens’ Metasurfaces to the Arbitrary Design of a Leaky-Wave Antenna

Leaky-wave antennas are guiding structures that leak power along their length. Their radiation is mainly characterized by the propagation constant (leakage factor and phase constant) of the traveling wave. In this contribution, a leakywave antenna based on parallel-plate waveguide is proposed. Arbitrary control of the leakage factor and the phase constant is achieved by replacing the top plate by an omega-type bianisotropic Huygens’ metasurface, which implements the desired field transformation. The theoretical derivation and design methodology are briefly described. Several designs with different pointing angles (phase constants) and leakage rates have been carried out. Electromagnetic simulation results validate the theoretical derivation, highlight the capabilities of the structure and confirm the flexibility in the design parameters.

    Get PDF

Light-induced effects on Spiro-OMeTAD films and hybrid lead halide perovskite solar cells

    Get PDF
Perovskite (PS) solar cells have emerged as a promising technology for low-cost and efficient photovoltaics. However, the main limiting factors are related to their low long-term stability. The loss of performance of these devices is commonly attributed to degradation of the PS itself. In order to further explore the origins of such limited stability, we have developed UV–vis spectroscopy studies that clearly demonstrate that PS layers remain unalterable under the working conditions. On the contrary, significant variations in the absorption spectra of the Spiro-OMeTAD layer (Spiro), a commonly used hole transporting material (HTM), indicate that the loss of performance over the irradiation time are attributed to the degradation of Spiro. UV–vis measurements evidence a photo-induced oxidation of Spiro, both under air and inert atmosphere. This photo-oxidation is accelerated by the commonly employed additives of the Spiro (LiTFSI and tBP), as well as by the interfacial contact with the electron injecting layer (TiO2). Therefore, our results point to the Spiro degradation as the main mechanism that induces the limited functioning of the PS solar cells. Consequently, focusing on the development of alternative HTMs stable under the working conditions is one of the critical issues to be overcome for a suitable progress of PS solar cells and related opto-electronic devices

    Software Design Guidelines for Usability

    Get PDF
For years, the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) community has crafted usability guidelines that clearly define what
characteristics a software system should have in order to be easy to use. However, in the Software Engineering (SE)
community keep falling short of successfully incorporating these recommendations into software projects. From a SE
perspective, the process of incorporating usability features into software is not always straightforward, as a large number
of these features have heavy implications in the underlying software architecture. For example, successfully including an
“undo” feature in an application requires the design and implementation of many complex interrelated data structures and
functionalities. Our work is focused upon providing developers with a set of software design patterns to assist them in the
process of designing more usable software. This would contribute to the proper inclusion of specific usability features
with high impact on the software design. Preliminary validation data show that usage of the guidelines also has positive
effects on development time and overall software design quality

    A Broadband Bow-Tie Cavity-Backed Slot for Traveling-Wave Arrays in the Millimeter-Wave Band

    Get PDF
The use of bow-tie geometries to enhance the characteristics of a radiating element previously proposed by the authors is presented. The previous element consisted of a broadband cavity-backed slot in transmission configuration. The bow-tie shape of the cavity improves the bandwidth of the element and the bow-tie slot keeps constant the amount of power radiated. The structure is designed for the millimeterwave band. The enhancement of the element performance is shown through simulation results. A fractional bandwidth of more than 100% is achieved in the 70 GHz band, and the radiated power remains almost constant throughout 30 GHz of the bandwidth. These results show a great improvement over the original radiating element. The radiating structure has the ideal characteristics for building series-fed reconfigurable arrays for wide-band applications in the millimeter-wave band.Universidad de Málaga.
