Measuring Youth Living Conditions in Europe: A Multidimensional Cross-Country Approach
Producción CientíficaSince the onset of the Great Recession, it could be argued that it is the young who have
been hardest hit in their living conditions. This paper offers a comprehensive description
of youth living conditions and how they evolved during the recession period. To do so,
we develop a synthetic index combining the indicators proposed by experts in the
dimensions of Education and Training, Employment and Entrepreneurship, and Social
Inclusion, through a multi-criteria approach based on the double reference point method.
This technique enriches the debate by shifting the focus to acceptable and desirable
thresholds for each indicator and by overcoming limitations inherent in previous youth
indexes that allow for total compensation between the indicators, whilst ignoring potential
imbalances. Results show that, in a context of convergence in policy instruments across
countries during the Great Recession, there was an improvement in education
performance, whereas cross-country divergences in terms of youth labour market
prospects and social inclusion increased. This evolution has led to a more complex picture
which is characterized by greater polarization in the spatial distribution of youth living
conditions, with two noticeable poles: north-central Europe as opposed to the south and
east of Europe. Differences in institutional configurations in the fields of education and
training, active labour market policies, employment protection legislation and welfare
provision together with macroeconomic trends, particularly levels of demand for youth
labour and fiscal resources, have played an important role in shaping European youth
living conditions
The role of part-time employment among young people with a non-university education in Spain
Producción CientíficaFor some people, a part-time job is merely an intermediate state that serves as a stepping stone to further employment and makes labour market integration easier. Yet, part-time work also appears in highly unstable careers. The present research aims to determine the role of part-time employment for young people with non-university studies. Using the Survey on Transition from Education/Training and Labour Market Integration (ETEFIL-2005), we build the monthly sequence of labour states for young people from when they finish their non-university studies until the time of the survey. The analysis allows us to conclude that part-time work is fairly atypical in the early stages of a career but that those who have part-time jobs spend quite a long time in them. In addition, we identify several patterns in the use of part-time work, the ‘integrative’ pattern proving to be the most prevalent. Factors such as education and early preferences are seen to have a major impact on career paths
Mapping the Occupations of Recent Graduates. The Role of Academic Background in the Digital Era
Producción CientíficaThe progressive robotisation and the introduction of artificial intelligence imply economic
and social changes. In this paper, we investigate their impact on the occupations of recent
Spanish graduates and examine how graduates with different skills can expect their occupations
to be transformed by the digital era. To this end –using a three-step approach—we
first map occupations in terms of the level of the transformative and destructive effects
of digitalization, and determine which groups are most threatened. Second, we characterize
the technological occupational groups according to dimensions related to worker and
job requirements, such as abilities, skills and tasks performed. Finally, we explore the
influence of educational background on the probability of belonging to each group. The
analysis relies on three data sources—the main one being microdata from the Survey on
Labour Market Insertion of University Graduates (EILU-2019)—which provide exhaustive
information about students’ education and training during and after their degree. Results
show that only about 15% of graduates hold jobs that have a high probability of being
replaced by machines over the next 10–20 years, although a significant number will still
face changes in their occupations that will affect skill requirements. Graduates working in
these occupations will need a high level of flexibility if they are to adjust to rapid changes
and not be displaced. Moreover, certain features of students’ academic background –such
as the field of study or more formal education– play a key role and offer some tips to mitigate
possible disruptions in graduate employability
The influence of organizational context on the managerial turnover–performance relationship
Producción CientíficaThis study performs a comprehensive examination of organizational context in the
relationship between managerial turnover and organizational performance. Using
theoretical frameworks of human and social capital, we focus on the moderating roles
of entity size, employment system, industry brand, and location. To test our hypotheses,
we worked with the company records of a multinational fashion retail group with
more than 4,000 stores grouped into eight different brands and 100,000 employees
in more than 31 countries. To estimate the causal contextual effects of the relationship
between voluntary managerial turnover and organizational performance, we
designed a quasi-experiment using propensity score matching analysis. Our results
show that the dysfunctional side of managerial turnover is significant for stores that
are large, for stores managed under a primary employment system, for brands operating
with higher levels of service orientation, and for countries with more restrictive
employment protection legislation. We discuss the implications of these findings for
practice and for future research
First approach to study the size and morphology of gorgonian corals and sponges using photogrammetric analysis from video transects in the Marine Protected Area ‘El Cachucho’ (Cantabrian Sea)
The use of non-invasive methodology, which does not cause damage or alterations on benthic communities, is particularly necessary in vulnerable ecosystem studies and Marine Protected Areas (MPA) monitoring. The European directives on protection and the OSPAR Commission described the habitats structured by sessile species of great size, such as corals or sponges, as particularly vulnerable habitats requiring special protection. The knowledge of population structures as indicators of their state of health is a requirement to improve the management programs. The presence of gorgonian forests and deep-sea sponge aggregations in the Le Danois Bank was the cause of it declaration by the Ministry of the Environment as "El Cachucho” MPA, being included in the Natura 2000 network. Currently being performed follow-up surveys to know their conservation status.
This study presents methodology and first results obtained in the analysis of the video transects acquired in ‘El Cachucho’ MPA, during the ESMAREC survey using the ROTV Politolana underwater towed vehicle. Video was recorded to pilot the ROTV, so characteristics of video camera were not specifically designed for monitoring the habitats. But recent developments in specific software of photogrammetric image analysis have allowed extracting valuable information of these video transects. The outputs of the photogrammetric approach include products such as geo-referenced orthomosaic, Digital Surface Model (DSM) and point cloud (XYZ).
These data show the possibility to evaluate the size and morphology (including 3D analysis) of the vulnerable species in the area, as the gorgonians Paramuricea placomus and Callogorgia verticillata and the sponges Asconema setubalense and Geodia megastrella. The non-invasive growth rate studies need a set of measurement, fan height, fan width, and others. This methodology will make easier future studies about age and rate of growth of these species and population structure in the zone
