With rise of modern societies and emerging market economies, scholars and socially- minded intellectuals started to express their concerns about negative repercussions on the social fabric of the human society. Significant amounts of research wrote about the gradual decline in social cohesion between different social classes. This decline is reasoned by multiple economic and political factors that some scholars link to capitalist polices. Many solutions were proposed to decrease this social stratification globally and in Egypt, through developing the sense of social responsibility among community members. One of the proposed solutions is community service programs. This study examines the effect of community service programs on the development of sense of social responsibility among private school students in Egypt. Methodologically, the study followed a qualitative approach. Focus group discussions took place with twenty-five students from two different schools to explore the relation between participation in community service programs and the development of a sense of social responsibility. Also, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with the four teachers who served as supervisors of different community service programs, in the school to uncover their perceptions about the impact of the programs on students. Findings of this study document the positive impact of community service programs on students socially, morally and personally. More importantly, a positive correlation was drawn between social responsibility and the extent of involvement in community service programs

Anti-hepatotoxic effect of Casuarina stricta and Casuarina suberosa extracts on alcohol-induced liver toxicity in rats

In recent years, there has been a global trend toward the use of natural phytochemicals present in natural resources, such as fruits, vegetables, oilseeds, and herbs, as antioxidants and functional foods. The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective and antioxidant effects of methanolic extract of Casuarina stricta and Casuarina suberosa leaves on ethanol induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The ethanol intoxication (1 ml of 40 % ethanol for 100 gm body weight for 6 weeks) to rats resulted in a significant increase in serum ALT, AST, ã glutamyl transferase (ã GT), hydroxyproline, MDA level and a significant decrease in serum albumin, total protein, A/G ratio, total antioxidant capacity, SOD, catalase activities and GSH level, P < 0.05. The treatment with Casuarina stricta and Casuarina suberosa extract at a dose of 250 mg/Kg body weight together with ethanol for 6 weeks successfully prevented the alterations of studied parameters in the treated groups. Both extracts significantly increased the total antioxidant capacity. The experimental results indicate that, both Casuarina extracts have excellent hepatoprotective effect.KEYWORDS: Casuarina stricta, Casuarina suberosa, liver, antioxidants, ethano

Pramipexole protective effect on rotenone induced neurotoxicity in mice

    Get PDF
    Introduction:
Pramipexole is a new dopaminergic drug which has been approved for PD treatment. However, we tried to find a new capacity for this drug rather than symptomatic effect.

Materials and Methods:
A chronic rotenone model with daily oral dose of 30mg/kg was induced in mice. Pramipexole was tried in a new approach where the treatment began in the middle of rotenone course with oral dose 1mg/kg/day of pramipexole.

Results:
Further analysis of behavioral tests and immunohistochemistry revealed success of pramipexole in improving the rotenone intoxicated mice.

Conclusion:
These results showed possible beneficial effects of pramipexole against rotenone-induced neurotoxicity

Haemophilia A patients are not at increased risk of hepatitis A virus infection: An Egyptian experience

Background: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is endemic in Egypt. Haemophiliacs are at risk of transmission through exposure to blood products. We evaluated the seroprevalence of hepatitis A in Egyptian patients with haemophilia A as well as the safety and immunogenicity of subcutaneous hepatitis A vaccine in haemophiliacs. Methods: 182 male children and adolescents were studied (82 patients with moderate and severe haemophilia A and 100 healthy controls). Screening for anti-HAV antibody was done and seronegative subjects received hepatitis A vaccine (Havrix™) at a dose of 720 Elisa Units at 0 and 6 months, given subcutaneously in haemophiliacs and intramuscularly for controls. Seroconversion was assessed 2 months after the second vaccine dose by anti-HAV IgG.Results: Seroprevalence of HAV antibodies was 87.6% among haemophiliacs and 90% among the control group. Seronegative children (mean age 4.4± 3.71 years) were significantly younger than seropositive children (mean age 10.2 ± 3.86 years). Hepatitis A vaccine was given to 10 non immune haemophilia patients and 10 controls. The vaccine was well tolerated with local side effects including pain in 40% and erythema in 20% of haemophiliacs versus 20% for pain and erythema in the control group. All patients and controls developed seroconversion 2 months after the second dose; with no significant difference as regards the titre of anti-HAV IgG (351.4± 65.0 IU/L for haemophiliacs and 367.0 ±132.3 IU/L for controls). Conclusion: HAV infection occurs early in life in Egyptian children, necessitating hepatitis A vaccination in early life. The vaccine is safe and effective when given subcutaneous in haemophiliacs. Keywords: Hepatitis A virus; Haemophilia A; Hepatitis A vaccin

Optimiranje fizikalno-kemijskih parametara, djelomično pročišćavanje i karakterizacija izvanstanične alkalne lipaze iz novog soja plijesni Curvularia sp. DHE 5

Thirty isolated fungal strains were screened for lipase production using Phenol Red plates, containing tributyrin as lipidic substrate, and a novel fungus identified genetically as Curvularia sp. DHE 5 was found as the most prominent strain. Various agro-industrial substrates were evaluated as inert supports for lipase production in solid-state fermentation. The highest yield of lipase ((83.4±2.2) U/g on dry mass basis) was reported with wheat bran medium after seven days of fermentation at pH=7.0, temperature of 30 °C, 70 % moisture content, inoculum size of 1.27·107 spore/mL and 2 % olive oil as an inducer. Supplementation of the medium with 0.05 % KCl as an ion source further increased lipase production to (88.9±1.2) U/g on dry mass basis. The enzyme was partially purified through ammonium sulphate fractionation (40 %) followed by dialysis, and its optimum pH and temperature were reported at 8.0 and 50 °C, respectively, with remarkable pH and thermal stability.U radu je ispitana proizvodnja lipaze iz 30 izolata plijesni na podlozi s tributirinom pomoću fenolnog crvenila, pri čemu se najviše istaknuo izolat koji je genetički identificiran kao novi soj plijesni Curvularia sp. DHE 5.
