    An ARDL Approach to Investigating the Link between Education Spending and Economic Growth in Egypt.

    In this paper, we explore the correlation between public spending on education and economic growth in Egypt. The paper seeks to shift the narrative surrounding education from a service to an investment. The study employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) co-integration technique using time series data from 1996 to 2022. The findings support previous research indicating a positive and significant long-term relationship between education spending and GDP growth at a 5% significance level. While the short-term relationship is negative, the highly significant negative error correction term (ECT) suggests that the whole model adjusts toward long-run equilibrium at a speed of 48%. The study concludes with recommendations for the variables examined and considers the broader context

    Reactivity of OH and CH3OH between 22 and 64 K: Modelling the gas phase production of CH3O in Barnard 1b

    In the last years, ultra-low temperature chemical kinetic experiments have demonstrated that some gas-phase reactions are much faster than previously thought. One example is the reaction between OH and CH3OH, which has been recently found to be accelerated at low temperatures yielding CH3O as main product. This finding opened the question of whether the CH3O observed in the dense core Barnard 1b could be formed by the gas-phase reaction of CH3OH and OH. Several chemical models including this reaction and grain-surface processes have been developed to explain the observed abundance of CH3_3O with little success. Here we report for the first time rate coefficients for the gas-phase reaction of OH and CH3OH down to a temperature of 22 K, very close to those in cold interstellar clouds. Two independent experimental set-ups based on the supersonic gas expansion technique coupled to the pulsed laser photolysis-laser induced fluorescence technique were used to determine rate coefficients in the temperature range 22-64 K. The temperature dependence obtained in this work can be expressed as k(22-64 K) = (3.6+/-0.1)e-12 (T/ 300)^(-1.0+/-0.2) cm3 molecule-1 s-1. Implementing this expression in a chemical model of a cold dense cloud results in CH3O/CH3OH abundance ratios similar or slightly lower than the value of 3e-3 observed in Barnard 1b. This finding confirms that the gas-phase reaction between OH and CH3OH is an important contributor to the formation of interstellar CH3O. The role of grain-surface processes in the formation of CH3O, although it cannot be fully neglected, remains controversial.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Giardia intestinalis assemblages among Egyptian symptomatic/asymptomatic cases in Cairo

    Giardia intestinalis is frequent enteric protozoa, affecting humans worldwide. Human infections aremainly caused by two genetically different assemblages call A & B. This cross-sectional study characterizedthe Giardia genotypes isolated from the stool of symptomatic and asymptomatic Egyptians inCairo and correlated these genotypes with the demographic and clinical data of the cases. Stool sampleswere collected from 389 individuals (245 complaining of gastrointestinal (GIT) symptoms and144 apparently healthy asymptomatic individuals), and microscopically examined. Positive Samplesfor G. intestinalis were molecularly characterized by Copro-nPCR targeting beta-giardin gene, andthen analyzed by RFLP for assemblage identification. Giardia was detected in 62 samples (15.9%); 53samples in symptomatic cases (21.6%) and 9 samples in asymptomatic individuals (6.25%). DNA ofpositive samples was amplified by nPCR-RFLP assays. There was a significant predominance of assemblageB among symptomatic (82.7%) and asymptomatic (77.8%) groups, while the rest of sampleshad assemblage A. Among the clinical data, only flatulence was significantly associated with Giardiainfection with assemblage B. Assemblage B is the predominant genotype found in Egypt in symptomaticand asymptomatic patients suggesting an anthropologic transmission cycle.Key Words: Giardia; genotyping; Assemblage; nPCR-RFLP; beta-giardin

    Reactivity of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-butanone: Photolysis and \OH\ reaction kinetics

    International audienceHydroxycarbonyl compounds are important secondary reaction products in the oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere. The atmospheric fate of these oxygenated \VOCs\ is however poorly understood, especially the relevance of the photolytic pathway. In this work, a combined investigation of the photolysis and temperature-dependent \OH\ radical reaction of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-butanone (3H3M2B) is presented. A photolysis lifetime of about 4-5 days was estimated with a global quantum yield of 0.10. The \OH\ reaction rate coefficient follows the Arrhenius trend (298-356 K) and could be modelled through the following expression: k3H3M2B(T) = (5.12 ± 0.07) × 10−12 exp(−563 ± 119/T) in cm3 molecule−1 s−1. A 3H3M2B atmospheric lifetime of 15 days towards the \OH\ radical was evaluated. Our results showed that the photolysis pathway is the major degradation channel for 3H3M2B. Photolysis products were identified and quantified in the present work with a carbon balance of around 80% enabling a reaction mechanism to be proposed. The present work underlines the need for further studies on the atmospheric chemistry of oxygenated VOCs

    Pharmacy education and practice in 13 middle eastern countries

    The Arab world has influenced the art and science of pharmacy for centuries. Pharmacy education and practice is continuing to evolve in the Arabic-speaking traditional Middle East countries, although relatively little information has been published in the English press. Our goal was to providea high-level synopsis of conditions in this region. We selected 13 countries for review. Information was obtained by reviewing the available published literature and individual university and program web sites, as well as contacting with program or country representatives. Seventy-eight active pharmacy schools in 12 countries were identified. At least 14,000 students (over 75% from Egypt) are admitted into baccalaureate degree programs every year. The 5-year baccalaureate degree remains the first professional degree to practice. While changes in pharmacy education have been relatively rapid over the past decade, the advancement of pharmacy practice, particularly in the private sector, appears to be slower. Hospital pharmacists often possess an advanced degree and tend to have a higher level of practice compared to that of community pharmacists. Despite the adversities that face academics and practitioners alike, there is a strong desire to advance the science and practice of pharmacy in the Middle East

    Electronic nicotine delivery systems and/or electronic non-nicotine delivery systems for tobacco smoking cessation or reduction: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objective A systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the impact of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and/or electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS) versus no smoking cessation aid, or alternative smoking cessation aids, in cigarette smokers on long-term tobacco use. Data sources Searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycInfo, CINAHL, CENTRAL and Web of Science up to December 2015. Study selection Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective cohort studies. Data extraction Three pairs of reviewers independently screened potentially eligible articles, extracted data from included studies on populations, interventions and outcomes and assessed their risk of bias. We used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach to rate overall certainty of the evidence by outcome. Data synthesis Three randomised trials including 1007 participants and nine cohorts including 13?115 participants proved eligible. Results provided by only two RCTs suggest a possible increase in tobacco smoking cessation with ENDS in comparison with ENNDS (RR 2.03, 95% CI 0.94 to 4.38; p=0.07; I2=0%, risk difference (RD) 64/1000 over 6 to 12?months, low-certainty evidence). Results from cohort studies suggested a possible reduction in quit rates with use of ENDS compared with no use of ENDS (OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.55 to 1.00; p=0.051; I2=56%, very low certainty). Conclusions There is very limited evidence regarding the impact of ENDS or ENNDS on tobacco smoking cessation, reduction or adverse effects: data from RCTs are of low certainty and observational studies of very low certainty. The limitations of the cohort studies led us to a rating of very low-certainty evidence from which no credible inferences can be drawn. Lack of usefulness with regard to address the question of e-cigarettes\u27 efficacy on smoking reduction and cessation was largely due to poor reporting. This review underlines the need to conduct well-designed trials measuring biochemically validated outcomes and adverse effects

    Alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase enzyme inhibition and antioxidant potential of 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid isolated from Nuxia oppositifolia

    Nuxia oppositifolia is traditionally used in diabetes treatment in many Arabian countries; however, scientific evidence is lacking. Hence, the present study explored the antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of the plant extracts and their purified compounds. The methanolic crude extract of N. oppositifolia was partitioned using a two-solvent system. The n-hexane fraction was purified by silica gel column chromatography to yield several compounds including katononic acid and 3-oxolupenal. Antidiabetic activities were assessed by α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition. Antioxidant capacities were examined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) scavenging assays. Further, the interaction between enzymes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase) and ligands (3-oxolupenal and katononic acid) was followed by fluorescence quenching and molecular docking studies. 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid showed IC50 values of 46.2 µg/mL (101.6 µM) and 52.4 µg/mL (119.3 µM), respectively against the amylase inhibition. 3-oxolupenal (62.3 µg/mL or 141.9 µM) exhibited more potent inhibition against α-glucosidases compared to katononic acid (88.6 µg/mL or 194.8 µM). In terms of antioxidant activity, the relatively polar crude extract and n-butanol fraction showed the greatest DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity. However, the antioxidant activities of the purified compounds were in the low to moderate range. Molecular docking studies confirmed that 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid interacted strongly with the active site residues of both α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Fluorescence quenching results also suggest that 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid have a good affinity towards both α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. This study provides preliminary data for the plant’s use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Decay constants, semi-leptonic and non-leptonic decays in a Bethe-Salpeter Model

    We evaluate the decay constants for the B and DD mesons and the form factors for the semileptonic decays of the B meson to DD and DD^* mesons in a Bethe-Salpeter model. From data we extract Vcb=0.039±0.002V_{cb}=0.039 \pm 0.002 from BˉDlνˉ{\bar B} \to D^* l {\bar{\nu}} and Vcb=0.037±0.004V_{cb}=0.037 \pm 0.004 from BˉDlνˉ{\bar B} \to D l {\bar{\nu}} decays. The form factors are then used to obtain non-leptonic decay partial widths for BDπ(K) B\to D \pi (K) and BDD(Ds)B \to D D (D_s) in the factorization approximation.Comment: 15 Pages, 3 Postscript figures (available also from [email protected]

    Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices: Band-Gap Structure and Solitons

    We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions

    Systematic survey of randomized trials evaluating the impact of alternative diagnostic strategies on patient-important outcomes

    Objectives: To provide a perspective on the current practice of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of diagnostic strategies focusing on patient-important outcomes. Study Design and Setting: We conducted a comprehensive search of MEDLINE and included RCTs published in full-text reports that evaluated alternative diagnostic strategies. Results: Of 56,912 unique citations, we sampled 7,500 and included 103 eligible RCTs, therefore suggesting that MEDLINE includes approximately 781 diagnostic RCTs. The 103 eligible trials reported on: mortality (n = 41; 39.8%); morbidities (n = 63; 61.2%); symptoms/quality of life/functional status (n = 14; 13.6%); and on composite end points (n = 10; 9.7%). Of the studies that reported statistically significant results (n = 12; 11.6%), we judged 7 (58.3%) as at low risk of bias with respect to missing outcome data and 4 (33.3%) as at low risk of bias regarding blinding. Of the 41 RCTs that reported on mortality, only one (2.4%) reported statistically significant results. Of 63 RCTs addressing morbidity outcomes, 11 (17.5%) reported statistically significant results, all of which reported relative effects of greater than 20%. Conclusion: RCTs of diagnostic tests are not uncommon, and sometimes suggest benefits on patient-important outcomes but often suffer from limitations in sample size and conduct.
