    Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

    Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

    Real-Time Implementation of Sliding Mode Controller for Buck Power Converter using DSpace 1104

    This paper deals an experimental validation of a nonlinear controller using a sliding mode control (SMC) with integral action for a dc-dc buck power converter. The main control objectives are: i) perfect regulation of inductor current with unknown load resistance variation, ii) and ensure the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. To this end, a SMC with integral action is elaborated. Using Matlab-Simulink software, numerical simulations are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Furthermore, using an experimental test bench, the real-time controller is developed based on the Dspace 1104 card in real time (RT). It was shown, using formal analysis, simulations and experiments, that the controller achieves all desired performances

    Optimizing the Multi-Objective Deployment Problem of Mlat System

    Multilateration (MLAT) systems are powerful means for air traffic surveillance. These systems aim to extract, and display to air traffic controllers identification of aircrafts or vehicles equipped with a transponder. They provide an accurate and real-time data without human intervention using a number of ground receiving stations, placed in some strategic locations around the coverage area, and they are connected with a Central Processing Subsystem (CPS) to compute the target (i.e., aircraft or vehicle) position. The MLAT performance strongly depends on system layout design which consists on deploying the minimum number of stations, in order to obtain the requested system coverage and performance, meeting all the regulatory standards with a minimum cost. In general, choosing the number of stations and their locations to cope with all the requirements is not an obvious task and the system designer has to make several attempts, by trial and error, before obtaining a satisfactory spatial distribution of the stations. In this work we propose a new approach to solve the deployment of Mlat stations problem by focusing on the number of deployed stations and the coverage as the main objectives to optimize. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II(NSGA-II) was used in order to minimize the total number of stations required to identify all targets in a given area, with the aim to minimize the deployment cost, accelerating processes, and achieve high availability and reliability. The proposed approach is more efficient and converge rapidly which makes it ideal for our research involving optimal deployment of Mlat station

    Power Distribution of D2D Communications in Case of Energy Harvesting Capability over <i>κ</i>-<i>μ</i> Shadowed Fading Conditions

    Device-to-device (D2D) communication will play a meaningful role in future wireless networks and standards, since it ensures ultra-low latency for communication among near devices. D2D transmissions can take place together with the actual cellular communications, so handling the interference is very important. In this paper, we consider a D2D couple operating in the uplink band in an underlaid mode, and, using the stochastic geometry, we propose a cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the D2D transmit power under κ-μ shadowed fading. Then, we derive some special cases for some fading channels, such as Nakagami and Rayleigh environments, and for the interference-limited scenario. Moreover, we propose a radio frequency energy harvesting, where the D2D users can harvests ambient RF energy from cellular users. Finally, the analytical results are validated via simulation

    Modeling, Analysis and Experimental Validation of the Fuel Cell Association with DC-DC Power Converters with Robust and Anti-Windup PID Controller Design

    Based on full and rigorous study, this paper addresses the issue of ensuring a feasible association in practice between a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) and DC-DC power converters including a buck and boost converter. This association is mathematically modeled, analyzed, and controlled by an optimal PID controller. Using absolute stability tools with a rigorous analytical approach that takes into consideration windup effects, in addition to the nonlinear behavior of the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, sufficient conditions are provided to ensure that the closed-loop system is L2-stable. These conditions allow the optimal PID controller parameters to be chosen and ensure the closed-loop system stability, by tracking reference outputs, and an optimal performance against perturbations. Formal analysis, numerical simulations, and experimental validation were carried out to verify that the PID controller designed with an anti-windup action is robust and meets all of the pre-defined objectives. Moreover, this study demonstrates that the association between the PEMFC and the DC-DC converters is achieved if only certain conditions are met

    Multi-objective optimization approach for air traffic flow management

    Air traffic has long been a generally high growth sector and all forecasts indicate that this trend will continue at a similar pace for the next twenty years. The regular traffic demand growth has led to congestionat airports and in space. In this paper, we will create in first a probabilistic model which describes the uncertainty of the aircraft’s trajectory,and its presence in a sector during a time interval. We define as result, amulti-objective optimization problem whose objective functions are the expected cost of delay and the expected cost of congestion.Then we use the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) to solve an instance included 21 flights and 1 sector, and is able to provide a good approximation of the Pareto front. The decision-making stage was then performed with the aid of data clustering techniques to reduce the sizeof the Pareto-optimal set and obtain a smaller representation of the multi-objective design space, there by making it easier for the decision-maker to find satisfactory and meaningful trade-offs, and to select a preferred final design solution
