    Lee-Yang zero analysis for the study of QCD phase structure

    We comment on the Lee-Yang zero analysis for the study of the phase structure of QCD at high temperature and baryon number density by Monte-Carlo simulations. We find that the sign problem for non-zero density QCD induces a serious problem in the finite volume scaling analysis of the Lee-Yang zeros for the investigation of the order of the phase transition. If the sign problem occurs at large volume, the Lee-Yang zeros will always approach the real axis of the complex parameter plane in the thermodynamic limit. This implies that a scaling behavior which would suggest a crossover transition will not be obtained. To clarify this problem, we discuss the Lee-Yang zero analysis for SU(3) pure gauge theory as a simple example without the sign problem, and then consider the case of non-zero density QCD. It is suggested that the distribution of the Lee-Yang zeros in the complex parameter space obtained by each simulation could be more important information for the investigation of the critical endpoint in the (T,ÎĽq)(T, \mu_q) plane than the finite volume scaling behavior.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, minor change

    An Approach to Higher Dimensional Theories Based on Lattice Gauge Theory

    A higher dimensional lattice space can be decomposed into a number of four-dimensional lattices called as layers. The higher dimensional gauge theory on the lattice can be interpreted as four-dimensional gauge theories on the multi-layer with interactions between neighboring layers.     Nuclear matrix element for two neutrino double beta decay from 136Xe

    The nuclear matrix element for the two neutrino double beta decay (DBD) of 136Xe was evaluated by FSQP (Fermi Surface Quasi Particle model), where experimental GT strengths measured by the charge exchange reaction and those by the beta decay rates were used. The 2 neutrino DBD matrix element is given by the sum of products of the single beta matrix elements via low-lying (Fermi Surface) quasi-particle states in the intermediate nucleus. 136Xe is the semi-magic nucleus with the closed neutron-shell, and the beta + transitions are almost blocked. Thus the 2 neutrino DBD is much suppressed. The evaluated 2 neutrino DBD matrix element is consistent with the observed value.Comment: 7 pages 6 figure

    Trajectory Traces of Charged Particles in the Magnetosphere

    The characteristic enhancements of ring current particles with energies of about 1 to 100 keV, associated with magnetospheric substorms, were observed by Explorer 45 around the plasmapause in the afternoon to midnight region, and showed the characteristic structure called a 'nose' in the proton spectrograms. The motion of these particles in the equatorial magnetosphere, under a recently proposed convection electric field and a dipole magnetic field is described. Approximate equations of a bounce period, a second adiabatic invariant, and a bounce-average azimuthal velocity are given with inaccuracies less than about 0.001 for all pitch angles. The complete set of flow patterns of 90 deg pitch angle particles is also presented by means of stagnation lines through which radial drifts and/or azimuthal drifts change their directions. The particle tracings in the magnetosphere give a basic concept to explain the observed nose characteristics

    Heavy quark free energies and screening at finite temperature and density

    We study the free energies of heavy quarks calculated from Polyakov loop correlation functions in full 2-flavour QCD using the p4-improved staggered fermion action. A small but finite Baryon number density is included via Taylor expansion of the fermion determinant in the Baryo-chemical potential mu.     Vaginal yeasts in the era of "over the counter" antifungals

    OBJECTIVE: To establish whether there has been any rise in the prevalence of non-albicans Candida species isolated from vaginal swabs since the introduction of “over the counter” antifungal treatments. METHOD: A retrospective review looking at all positive vaginal yeast isolates collected from women attending one genitourinary medicine clinic during the 6 year period from 1993 to 1998 inclusive. All positive vaginal yeast isolates were included, regardless of whether or not the patients were symptomatic. Isolates from HIV positive women were excluded from the analysis. RESULT: No increase in non-albicans vaginal yeast isolates was shown during the period studied. The proportion of non-albicans yeasts remained constant at approximately 5% of the total yeasts isolated. The most common non-albicans yeast isolated was C glabrata. CONCLUSION: There is no evidence from this study to suggest that the increasing use of “over the counter” antifungal treatment has selected for atypical, possibly inherently azole resistant, strains of vaginal yeasts in HIV seronegative women

    Signals in Single-Event Pion Interferometry for Granular Sources of Quark-Gluon Plasma Droplets

    We investigate two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations of quark-gluon plasma droplet sources in single-event measurements.     The QCD equation of state for two flavours at non-zero chemical potential

    We present results of a simulation of 2 flavour QCD on a 163Ă—416^3\times4 lattice using p4-improved staggered fermions with bare quark mass m/T=0.4m/T=0.4. Derivatives of the thermodynamic grand canonical partition function Z(V,T,ÎĽu,ÎĽd)Z(V,T,\mu_u,\mu_d) with respect to chemical potentials ÎĽu,d\mu_{u,d} for different quark flavours are calculated up to sixth order, enabling estimates of the pressure and the quark number density as well as the chiral condensate and various susceptibilities as functions of ÎĽu,d\mu_{u,d} via Taylor series expansion. Results are compared to high temperature perturbation theory as well as a hadron resonance gas model. We also analyze baryon as well as isospin fluctuations and discuss the relation to the chiral critical point in the QCD phase diagram.
