This article assumes that strategic alliances are a particular form of co-operation between firms,
recognises the need to clarify the concept, and suggests elements of distinction with other forms of
co-operation and inter-organizational relationships. Contributing for this effort of clarification,
the article discusses and recognises some limitations in the literature on types of strategic alliances,
and proposes a new typology of strategic alliances. The typology is based on three domains of cooperation
which, in turn, are based on different activities. The empirical study was based on a
survey to which replied 133 Portuguese industrial firms which participated in the European Union’s
Europartenariat programme. The main results of this study suggest that: (1) the studied firms have
very positive indicators of co-operation; (2) the intensity of strategic alliances is associated with
the firms’ size; (3) the global intensity of strategic alliances varies according to each industry; (4)
the importance of each type of strategic alliance varies according to each industry; (5) the importance
of each type of strategic alliance varies according to the type of partner involved in the other side

Quality evaluation in healthcare services based on the customer-provider relationship.
This paper identifies important changes in the Portuguese healthcare industry such as the ownership of healthcare providers, meaning that profit-oriented organisations are currently entering into an industry, which was traditionally dominated by public services. At the same time customers are changing their attitudes towards healthcare becoming much more concerned and demanding with health services. These changes are driving Portuguese healthcare private and public organisations to develop more marketing-oriented services. This paper recognises the importance of quality evaluation of healthcare services as a means to increase levels of customer satisfaction and organisational efficiency. Although evaluating healthcare services raises different questions from other services because of their complexity, ambiguity and heterogeneity, the paper develops a framework to healthcare evaluation based on the relationship between customers (patients, their relatives and citizens) and providers (managers, doctors, other technical staff, non-technical staff) having in mind four quality items (customer service orientation, financial performance, logistical functionality, and level of staff competence).Healthcare, customer service, quality evaluation, performance
The role of information for the customer journey in mobile food ordering apps
Rita, P., Eiriz, V., & Conde, B. (2022). The role of information for the customer journey in mobile food ordering apps. Journal Of Services Marketing. https://doi.org/10.1108/JSM-11-2021-0407Purpose This study aims to determine how to influence the customer journey of mobile food ordering applications (MFOAs) users. It researches how available information could influence customers’ intention to use MFOAs platforms in the prepurchase stage and explores the potential of personalized information to improve customer satisfaction with these services in the postpurchase stage. Design/methodology/approach This research followed a mixed design, combining qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative (online survey) research and using both content analysis and partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings Two types of available information (firm-generated information and online customer reviews) had a positive influence on the behavioral intention to use MFOAs. Additionally, findings showed that different web personalization strategies, namely, content personalization, functional personalization and system-driven personalization, were useful tools to create customer satisfaction with this type of platform. Research limitations/implications The study discusses limitations regarding the sample and sampling process, indicator variables and measures. Practical implications The present research provides actionable insights for online food delivery providers. Originality/value This study addresses a research gap in the literature and provides a novel and richer understanding of customer behavior toward mobile food delivery platforms. Also, it adds to the personalization research by identifying and testing a range of web personalization strategies. Keywordsauthorsversionepub_ahead_of_prin
Firms’ innovation across regions : an exploratory study
NIPE WP 12/2013This paper investigates the geographical distribution and concentration of firms’ innovation persistence and innovation type - product and process - based upon three waves of the Community Innovation Survey data covering the period 1998-2006. The main findings are: (i) both innovation persistence and innovation type are asymmetrically distributed across Portuguese regions; (ii) the degree of correlation between geographical location and innovative output varies with the innovation type; and (iii); the correlation between geographical unit and innovation increases when the spatial unit of analysis is narrower. Overall, results indicate that firm’s choice of geographical location have a long-lasting effect, engendering no equal probabilities of being persistently innovator.COMPETE; QREN; FEDER; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Industry- and firm-specific factors of innovation novelty
This paper investigates the underlying factors that might shape the firm’s choices with respect to degrees of innovation novelty.Using a sample of 2983 firms observed under the Portuguese Community Innovation Survey, we assess the relative relevance of a set of firm- and industry-specific factors in explaining firms’ choices about incremental or radical innovation. The results indicate that both the firm’s idiosyncratic historical factors giving rise to heterogeneous R&D capabilities and the industry context have power to shape the firm’s innovation choices, even though firm-specific factors appear to be more powerful. The estimated impacts on firm’s innovation novelty are, nonetheless, significantly moderated by the type of firm and industry.COMPETE, QREN, FEDER, FC
Public and private partnerships in the hospital sector – New challenges for Portugal
In a changing scenario in the hospital sector, facing pressures from many sides, like government budget constraints, patients demanding higher level of service quality and internal stakeholders (like doctors and nurses) trying to impose its power, the European Commission is supporting, with the help of Portuguese government, a new type of management in public hospitals: public and private partnership (henceforth PPP). These partnerships are not new in Europe, nevertheless in hospital sector are rare. In Portugal, Hospital Fernando da Fonseca is the unique experience similar with the PPP management, but unfortunately the data related with this experience are not enough to guarantee success to this type of management. But the government intends to launch ten new PPP hospital projects, which it will demand special efforts in terms of developing new tools to monitor the performance of the new projects. Beyond the preliminary advantages and disadvantages of the PPP, it is important to keep a special focus in key variables related with hospital sector, such as: patients, technology, taxpayers and government, and also internal stakeholders. Future research it will be necessary to evaluate the success or failure of the new PPP hospitalN/
A research proposal on the relationship between investment in medical devices and hospital performance
This paper aims to propose a research on the impact of medical devices on hospital performance. New medical
devices, from typical magnetic resonance and ultrasound technology to more modern and rare technologies like transplant surgery or orthopedic devices, are very expensive and, in some cases, are in a test phase. These new medical devices allow hospitals to offer new or enhanced services. New medical devices provide more patients to hospitals, a higher level of usage rate and additional revenues. But sometimes, they will not bring superior performance due to its poor usage. This paper proposes to investigate the relationship between investment in medical devices and hospital performance in the Portuguese hospital sector using data collected from secondary and primary sources. Some of the expected difficulties in implementing this research are also discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
operacionalizar a relação universidade-empresa.
The capacity to establish sustainable and mutual advantage relationships between university and
enterprise is a challenge raised by a more demanding society. This article identifies three levels of
analysis of the university-enterprise relationship: i. supra-institutional level; ii. strategic level; and iii.
operational level. The article focuses on the operational level and takes into account how an
undergraduate degree in management can boost different sorts of relationships between university and
enterprise. Then, it presents and discusses several teaching/learning initiatives that may be used to
develop and implement university-enterprise relationships. For one of those actions – internships – the
article analyses how they were, in a first moment, a barrier to the relationship, and, in a second
moment, after a new plan of studies, how they were managed to foster university-enterprise
relationships based on interdependence and reciprocity in costs and benefits
