A new species of the genus Pista (Annelida: Polychaeta: Terebellidae) was found on a boulder bottom in shallow waters of of Shizugawa Bay, Sanriku coast, northern Honshu, Japan. Individuals of this species measure 5 to 10 cm long and 3 to 5 mm wide. There are two pairs of branchiae on segments 2 and 3, each with an annulated long stalk and many dichotomous branches. The peristomium and segment 3 have elongate, semi-circular lateral lobes, segments 2 and 4 each have small lobes, segments 5 and 6 have very small lobes inserted between the neuropodium and ventral pad. Individuals of the new species have 17 pairs of notopodia from segment 4 and conical nephridial papillae on segments 6 and 7. The new Japanese species differs from all known species in the structure of the branchiae and the lateral lobes of anterior chaetigers. &nbsp

The polychaete Lygdamis wirtzi at Ascension and St Helena Islands (Annelida, Polychaeta, Sabellariidae)

The genus Lygdamis (Family Sabellariidae) currently contains 20 species (Hutchings et al. 2012; Capa et al. 2015). Lygdamis wirtzi Nishi and Núñez, 1999, was originally described from Madeira Island and the Canary Islands and has also been found at the Cape Verde Islands and at São Tomé Island (Wirtz 2001, 2003). New observations of this species were made while SCUBA diving at the coasts of Ascension and St Helena Islands in 2013 and 2015.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sabellaria tottoriensis n. sp. (Annelida: Polychaeta: Sabellariidae) from Shallow Water off Tottori, the Sea of Japan

A new species of the genus Sabellaria Lamarck, 1812 (Annelida: Polychaeta: Sabellariidae), is described from shallow water off Tottori, the Sea of Japan. Sabellaria tottoriensis n. sp., is gregarious with tubes constructed of sand and shell debris. The new species is distinguished by the character combination of 1 or 2 pairs of nuchal spines, two forms (long and short) of opercular paleae in the middle row, with the slender blades of long ones recurved outward. Detailed morphological features of the species are described and compared with other Japanese and worldwide congeners

Two new species of Japanese Syllidae (Polychaeta) belonging to the genera Haplosyllis Langerhans, 1879 and Syllis Lamarck, 1818 are described. Haplosyllis crassicirrata n. sp. is characterized by its distinctly spindle-shaped thick dorsal cirri, with yellow granular inclusions, two unequal simple chaetae per parapodium, and the shape of the chaetae. Syllis marugani n. sp. is characterized by its distinct orange colour (in ethanol preserved specimens), long and broad dorsal cirri, compound chaetae having robust shafts in the posterior part of the body, and short blades strongly bidentate. &nbsp

First record of Euborlasia nigrocincta Coe, 1940 (Nemertea: Heteronemertea) from the western Pacific

The heteronemertean Euborlasia nigrocincta Coe, 1940 was previously known exclusively from the eastern Pacific. A specimen collected on the Izu Peninsula, Honshu, Japan, herein identified as E. nigrocincta, represents the first record of the species from the western Pacific, increasing the western extent of the species’ known range by more than 8300 km and indicating an amphi-Pacific distributio

Notaulax yamasui sp. n. (Annelida, Sabellidae) from Okinawa and Ogasawara, Japan, with notes on its ecology

Este artículo contiene 16 páginas, 5 figuras. The polychaete Notaulax yamasui sp. n. (Sabellidae) is described from Okinawa and Ogasawara, south Japan, where it was found living embedded in a dead skeleton of the coral Porites sp. The new species is characterized by the presence of a pigmented sub-distal swelling on the tips of the crown radioles, a unique feature among species of the genus. Besides, its collar chaetae have an L-shape orientation, and the dorsal basal flanges of the branchial lobes are long and have a dorsal joint.Peer reviewe

Este artículo contiene 20 páginas.Acromegalomma, nomen novum, is introduced as a replacement name for the polychaete genus Megalomma Johansson, 1926 (Annelida, Sabellidae), preoccupied by Megalomma Westwood, 1842 (Insecta, Coleoptera, Carabidae). The historical background of the homonymy and a full list with 36 new combinations in the new genus are included, while two species are considered as species inquirenda. This work was financially supported by the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013), through the Assemble Grant Agreement no. 227799-ASSEMBLE to the project “Biodiversity of Annelida Polychaeta in the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon: a baseline study”, awarded to J.G. and developed at the CCMAR, University of Algarve (Faro, Portugal).Peer reviewe

Chaetopterid Polychaetes from Okinawa Island, Japan, with Notes on the Feeding Behaviour of Spiochaetopterus costarum costarum

    Get PDF
Occurrence of four chaetopterid polychaetes, namely Phyllochaetopterus herdmani Willey, P. verrilli Treadwell, Mesochaetopterus sagittarius (Claparede), and Spiochaetopterus costarum costarum (Claparede), are reported from the sandy bottom of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. Setal morphology and several body characters are described based on the scanning electron microscopical observations. Among them, Phyllochaetopterus herdmani, P. verrilli and S. costarum costarum are new to Japan. Feeding behavior of S. costarum costarum was studied during the rearing experiments using glass tubes. This species performs mucous-bag feeding by employing foliaceous notopodia and a cupule located at the first setiger of middle body region
