Time allocation and firm performance: The case of Chinese entrepreneurs
This paper analyses the effect of time allocation on the financial performance of entrepreneurial firms. We apply the Lewbel (2012) estimator to a pooled dataset of Chinese private manufacturing firms that are managed by their owners. Time is allocated between management, networking and study activities. After accounting for endogeneity, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship between management hours and firm performance and between networking and firm performance. However, no relationship between time spent studying and firm performance is observed. We also find that the managing hours-performance relationship is particularly strong for companies managed by entrepreneurs who own more than 75% of share, for companies that are managed by owners with previous experience, for male entrepreneurs and for smaller sized firms
Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy: Study of Bacterial Recovery Viability and Potential Development of Resistance after Treatment
Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has emerged in the clinical field as a potential alternative to antibiotics to treat microbial infections. No cases of microbial viability recovery or any resistance mechanisms against it are yet known. 5,10,15-tris(1-Methylpyridinium-4-yl)-20-(pentafluorophenyl)-porphyrin triiodide (Tri-Py+-Me-PF) was used as photosensitizer. Vibrio fischeri and recombinant Escherichia coli were the studied bacteria. To determine the bacterial recovery after treatment, Tri-Py+-Me-PF (5.0 μM) was added to bacterial suspensions and the samples were irradiated with white light (40 W m−2) for 270 minutes. Then, the samples were protected from light, aliquots collected at different intervals and the bioluminescence measured. To assess the development of resistance after treatment, bacterial suspensions were exposed to white light (25 minutes), in presence of 5.0 μM of Tri-Py+-Me-PF (99.99% of inactivation) and plated. After the first irradiation period, surviving colonies were collected from the plate and resuspended in PBS. Then, an identical protocol was used and repeated ten times for each bacterium. The results suggest that aPDT using Tri-Py+-Me-PF represents a promising approach to efficiently destroy bacteria since after a single treatment these microorganisms do not recover their viability and after ten generations of partially photosensitized cells neither of the bacteria develop resistance to the photodynamic process
Polystyrene comb architectures as model systems for the optimized solution electrospinning of branched polymers
The bead to bead-free fibers transition for electrospun filaments was investigated for well-defined linear and comb homopolymers. A series of monodisperse model comb structures with well-defined backbone and side chains was synthesized using anionic polymerization of polystyrene (PS). All model combs had the same backbone and a similar total molecular weight. The length and number of branches was varied, but the total number of monomers in the side chains was nearly constant.
Solutions of these polystyrenes in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were electrospun under identical conditions to determine the effect of molecular topology on the morphology of the fibers. The morphology and fiber diameter for all PS model polymers depended on the zero shear viscosity, η0. The comb solutions generally formed fibers at lower η0 and the fibers had larger diameters compared with linear polystyrene. The bead to fiber transition occurred at substantially lower polymer concentrations for combs with fewer, but longer branches
The quasi-binary phase diagram BaF2-BaBr2 and its relation to the x-ray storage phosphor BaFBr : Eu2+
In order to understand the formation and stoichiometry of the x-ray storage phosphor BaFBr: Eu2+, the phase diagram of the quasi-binary BaF2-BaBr2 system has been investigated. The phase diagram was obtained by means of differential thermal analysis and temperature controlled x-ray diffraction experiments. The resulting phase diagram indicates that BaFBr forms a compound with no detectable solid solubility for neither BaF2 nor BaBr2. Experiments to obtain non-stoichiometric BaFBr via the synthesis route using BaF2 and NH4Br as proposed in the literature could not be verified. It will be shown that the type of colour centre created during x-ray irradiation is related to the non-stoichiometry of the starting compositions before sintering. A surplus of either barium fluoride or barium bromide during sintering allows the controlled formation of F(Br-)- and F(F-)-centres, respectively

Succession of transiently active tumor‐initiating cell clones in human pancreatic cancer xenografts
Abstract Although tumor‐initiating cell (TIC) self‐renewal has been postulated to be essential in progression and metastasis formation of human pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC), clonal dynamics of TICs within PDAC tumors are yet unknown. Here, we show that long‐term progression of PDAC in serial xenotransplantation is driven by a succession of transiently active TICs producing tumor cells in temporally restricted bursts. Clonal tracking of individual, genetically marked TICs revealed that individual tumors are generated by distinct sets of TICs with very little overlap between subsequent xenograft generations. An unexpected functional and phenotypic plasticity of pancreatic TICs in vivo underlies the recruitment of inactive TIC clones in serial xenografts. The observed clonal succession of TIC activity in serial xenotransplantation is in stark contrast to the continuous activity of limited numbers of self‐renewing TICs within a fixed cellular hierarchy observed in other epithelial cancers and emphasizes the need to target TIC activation, rather than a fixed TIC population, in PDAC
