Aluminum removal from washed sludge
Purpose of this project is to reduce the volume of storage tank sludge to be treated by removing the Al and other nonradioactive components. In initial sludge surrogate studies, Al, Cr, and Zn showed the highest solubility in NaOH solutions; Ce and Zr were the least soluble of the elements tested. Removal of Fe and Bi approached 2%, the rest of the elements studied showed <1% removal. Amount of Al removed increased as the NaOH conc. increased from 0.1 to 6 M. Sequential washing of the sludge surrogate with 3 M NaOH removed 84% of the Al, 39% of the Cr, and 65% of the Zn. Surrogate sludges containing U and Th were also studied
Phase field modeling of electrochemistry I: Equilibrium
A diffuse interface (phase field) model for an electrochemical system is
developed. We describe the minimal set of components needed to model an
electrochemical interface and present a variational derivation of the governing
equations. With a simple set of assumptions: mass and volume constraints,
Poisson's equation, ideal solution thermodynamics in the bulk, and a simple
description of the competing energies in the interface, the model captures the
charge separation associated with the equilibrium double layer at the
electrochemical interface. The decay of the electrostatic potential in the
electrolyte agrees with the classical Gouy-Chapman and Debye-H\"uckel theories.
We calculate the surface energy, surface charge, and differential capacitance
as functions of potential and find qualitative agreement between the model and
existing theories and experiments. In particular, the differential capacitance
curves exhibit complex shapes with multiple extrema, as exhibited in many

Development and testing of inorganic sorbents made by the internal gelation process for radionuclide and heavy metal separations
The objectives of this task are to develop, prepare, and test microspheres and granular forms of inorganic ion exchangers to remove radionuclides and heavy metals from waste streams occurring at various sites. Several inorganic materials, such as hexacyanoferrates, titanates, phosphates, and oxides have high selectivities and efficiencies for separating and removing radionuclides such as uranium, technetium, cesium, and strontium, and metals such as cobalt, silver, zinc, and zirconium from aqueous waste streams. However, these sorbents frequently exist only as powders and consequently are not readily adaptable to continuous processing such as column chromatography. Making these inorganic ion exchangers as microspheres or granular forms improves the flow dynamics for column operations and expands their practical applications. Microspheres of several materials have been prepared at ORNL, and the effectiveness of zirconium monohydrogen phosphate and hydrous titanium oxide microspheres for removing radionuclides from hot cell waste solutions has been demonstrated

Comprehensive supernate treatment
This task involves the recovery of the liquid (supernatant or supernate) portions of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Melton Valley Storage Tank waste in a hot cell and treatment of the supernate to separate and remove the radionuclides. The supernate is utilized in testing various sorbent materials for removing cesium, strontium, and technetium from the highly alkaline, saline solutions. Batch tests are used to evaluate and select the most promising materials for supernate treatment to reduce the amount of waste for final disposal. Once the sorbents have been selected based on the results from the batch tests, small column tests are made to verify the batch data. Additional data from these tests can be used for process design. The sorption tests emphasize evaluation of newly developed sorbents and engineered forms of sorbents. Methods are also evaluated for recovering the radionuclides from the sorbents, including evaluating conditions for eluting ion exchange resins. A final report will summarize the results and compare the results with those of other investigators, along with recommendations for separating and concentrating radionuclides from DOE storage tank supernates at Oak Ridge and other sites. Documentation of the data and the significance of the findings will be compared, and recommendations will be provided to likely users of the data in EM-30. This program also provides input to the supernate treatment process demonstration projects at ORNL
A new scheme of radiation transfer in H II regions including transient heating of grains
A new scheme of radiation transfer for understanding infrared spectra of H II
regions, has been developed. This scheme considers non-equilibrium processes
(e. g. transient heating of the very small grains, VSG; and the polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbon, PAH) also, in addition to the equilibrium thermal
emission from normal dust grains (BG). The spherically symmetric interstellar
dust cloud is segmented into a large number of "onion skin" shells in order to
implement the non-equilibrium processes. The scheme attempts to fit the
observed SED originating from the dust component, by exploring the following
parameters : (i) geometrical details of the dust cloud, (ii) PAH size and
abundance, (iii) composition of normal grains (BG), (iv) radial distribution of
all dust (BG, VSG & PAH).
The scheme has been applied to a set of five compact H II regions (IRAS
18116- 1646, 18162-2048, 19442+2427, 22308+5812 & 18434-0242) whose spectra are
available with adequate spectral resolution. The best fit models and inferences
about the parameters for these sources are presented.Comment: 16 pages total including 3 tables and 2 figure
Extragalactic millimeter-wave sources in South Pole Telescope survey data: source counts, catalog, and statistics for an 87 square-degree field
We report the results of an 87 square-degree point-source survey centered at
R.A. 5h30m, decl. -55 deg. taken with the South Pole Telescope (SPT) at 1.4 and
2.0 mm wavelengths with arc-minute resolution and milli-Jansky depth. Based on
the ratio of flux in the two bands, we separate the detected sources into two
populations, one consistent with synchrotron emission from active galactic
nuclei (AGN) and one consistent with thermal emission from dust. We present
source counts for each population from 11 to 640 mJy at 1.4 mm and from 4.4 to
800 mJy at 2.0 mm. The 2.0 mm counts are dominated by synchrotron-dominated
sources across our reported flux range; the 1.4 mm counts are dominated by
synchroton-dominated sources above ~15 mJy and by dust-dominated sources below
that flux level. We detect 141 synchrotron-dominated sources and 47
dust-dominated sources at S/N > 4.5 in at least one band. All of the most
significantly detected members of the synchrotron-dominated population are
associated with sources in previously published radio catalogs. Some of the
dust-dominated sources are associated with nearby (z << 1) galaxies whose dust
emission is also detected by the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS). However,
most of the bright, dust-dominated sources have no counterparts in any existing
catalogs. We argue that these sources represent the rarest and brightest
members of the population commonly referred to as sub-millimeter galaxies
(SMGs). Because these sources are selected at longer wavelengths than in
typical SMG surveys, they are expected to have a higher mean redshift
distribution and may provide a new window on galaxy formation in the early

Impact of protein supplementation during endurance training on changes in skeletal muscle transcriptome
Background: Protein supplementation improves physiological adaptations to endurance training, but the impact on adaptive changes in the skeletal muscle transcriptome remains elusive. The present analysis was executed to determine the impact of protein supplementation on changes in the skeletal muscle transcriptome following 5- weeks of endurance training. Results: Skeletal muscle tissue samples from the vastus lateralis were taken before and after 5-weeks of endurance training to assess changes in the skeletal muscle transcriptome. One hundred and 63 genes were differentially expressed after 5-weeks of endurance training in both groups (q-value 0.05). Endurance training primarily affected expression levels of genes related to extracellular matrix and these changes tended to be greater in PRO than in CON. Conclusions: Protein supplementation subtly impacts endurance training-induced changes in the skeletal muscle transcriptome. In addition, our transcriptomic analysis revealed that the extracellular matrix may be an important factor for skeletal muscle adaptation in response to endurance training. Utilization of COVID-19 Treatments and Clinical Outcomes among Patients with Cancer: A COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium (CCC19) Cohort Study.
Among 2,186 U.S. adults with invasive cancer and laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, we examined the association of COVID-19 treatments with 30-day all-cause mortality and factors associated with treatment. Logistic regression with multiple adjustments (e.g., comorbidities, cancer status, baseline COVID-19 severity) was performed. Hydroxychloroquine with any other drug was associated with increased mortality versus treatment with any COVID-19 treatment other than hydroxychloroquine or untreated controls; this association was not present with hydroxychloroquine alone. Remdesivir had numerically reduced mortality versus untreated controls that did not reach statistical significance. Baseline COVID-19 severity was strongly associated with receipt of any treatment. Black patients were approximately half as likely to receive remdesivir as white patients. Although observational studies can be limited by potential unmeasured confounding, our findings add to the emerging understanding of patterns of care for patients with cancer and COVID-19 and support evaluation of emerging treatments through inclusive prospective controlled trials. SIGNIFICANCE: Evaluating the potential role of COVID-19 treatments in patients with cancer in a large observational study, there was no statistically significant 30-day all-cause mortality benefit with hydroxychloroquine or high-dose corticosteroids alone or in combination; remdesivir showed potential benefit. Treatment receipt reflects clinical decision-making and suggests disparities in medication access.This article is highlighted in the In This Issue feature, p. 1426
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Gene Val66Met Polymorphism Modulates Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndromes
BACKGROUND: Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) could be complicated by cerebral ischemic events. Hypothetical mechanisms of RCVS involve endothelial dysfunction and sympathetic overactivity, both of which were reported to be related to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The study investigated the association between functional BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and RCVS. METHODS: Patients with RCVS and controls were prospectively recruited and genotyped for the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and transcranial color-coded Doppler sonography were employed to evaluate cerebral vasoconstriction. Genotyping results, clinical parameters, vasoconstriction scores, mean flow velocities of the middle cerebral artery (V(MCA)), and Lindegaard indices were analyzed. Split-sample approach was employed to internally validate the data. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Ninety Taiwanese patients with RCVS and 180 age- and gender-matched normal controls of the same ethnicity completed the study. The genotype frequencies did not differ between patients and controls. Compared to patients with Met/Met homozygosity, patients with Val allele had higher mean vasoconstriction scores of all arterial segments (1.60±0.72 vs. 0.87±0.39, p<0.001), V(MCA) values (116.7±36.2 vs. 82.7±17.9 cm/s, p<0.001), and LI (2.41±0.91 vs. 1.89±0.41, p = 0.001). None of the Met/Met homozygotes, but 38.9% of the Val carriers, had V(MCA) values of >120 cm/s (p<0.001). Split-sample validation by randomization, age, entry time or residence of patients demonstrated concordant findings. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings link BDNF Val66Met polymorphism with the severity of RCVS for the first time and implicate possible pathogenic mechanisms for vasoconstriction in RCVS
