CFD Evaluation of Mixing Processes for High-Level Nuclear Waste Tanks

    Get PDF
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been applied to investigate two aspects of a mixing process for high level nuclear waste tanks. Through CFD the applicability of Poreh’s correlations that are currently used to describe the radial wall jets in the Pulse Jet Mixing (PJM) process were assessed. In addition, simulations were conducted in order to investigate mean hydrodynamic characteristics of sparged non-Newtonian fluids for the use in the PJM process. Three single phase turbulent simulations using the commercial package STAR-CCM+ were successively conducted. A model validated with experimental data was developed and successively altered to see effects of low characteristic ratio and a curved impingement surface. Results suggested that Poreh’s correlations are applicable under PJM conditions and geometry. Lastly, multi-phase Eulerian-Eulerian Simulations were conducted using the commercial software package ANSYS Fluent. Altering the characteristic ratio (h/D) of a sparged non-Newtonian fluid system resulted in a trend of flattening air volume fraction and air axial velocity profiles with decreasing characteristic ratio

Integration of spectral coronagraphy within VIPA-based spectrometers for high extinction Brillouin imaging

This work was supported in part by the National Institutes of Health (K25EB015885, R33CA204582, U01CA202177); National Science Foundation (CMMI-1537027) and Human Frontier Science Program (Young Investigator Grant RGY0074).VIPA (virtually imaged phase array) spectrometers have enabled rapid Brillouin spectrum measurements and current designs of multi-stage VIPA spectrometers offer enough spectral extinction to probe transparent tissue, cells and biomaterials. However, in highly scattering media or in the presence of strong back-reflections, such as at interfaces between materials of different refractive indices, VIPA-based Brillouin spectral measurements are limited. While several approaches to address this issue have recently been pursued, important challenges remain. Here we have adapted the design of coronagraphs used for exosolar planet imaging to the spectral domain and integrated it in a double-stage VIPA spectrometer. We demonstrate that this yields an increase in extinction up to 20 dB, with nearly no added insertion loss. The power of this improvement is vividly demonstrated by Brillouin imaging close to reflecting interfaces without index matching or sample tilting.PostprintPeer reviewe

Diffraction-limited plenoptic imaging with correlated light

Traditional optical imaging faces an unavoidable trade-off between resolution and depth of field (DOF). To increase resolution, high numerical apertures (NA) are needed, but the associated large angular uncertainty results in a limited range of depths that can be put in sharp focus. Plenoptic imaging was introduced a few years ago to remedy this trade off. To this aim, plenoptic imaging reconstructs the path of light rays from the lens to the sensor. However, the improvement offered by standard plenoptic imaging is practical and not fundamental: the increased DOF leads to a proportional reduction of the resolution well above the diffraction limit imposed by the lens NA. In this paper, we demonstrate that correlation measurements enable pushing plenoptic imaging to its fundamental limits of both resolution and DOF. Namely, we demonstrate to maintain the imaging resolution at the diffraction limit while increasing the depth of field by a factor of 7. Our results represent the theoretical and experimental basis for the effective development of the promising applications of plenoptic imaging.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

Lagrange interpolation at real projections of Leja sequences for the unit disk

    Get PDF
We show that the Lebesgue constant of the real projection of Leja sequences for the unit disk grows like a polynomial. The main application is the first construction of explicit multivariate interpolation points in [−1,1]N[-1,1]^N whose Lebesgue constant also grows like a polynomial.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

Race-gender intersectionality in Mexican digital news on Kamala Harris

    Get PDF
The present study aims to analyze the news information that emerged during Kamala Harris’ campaign for U.S. vice-presidency on Mexican websites. For this, a content analysis was carried out in order to detect: a) actors who intervened in the information; b) topics covered; c) racial identification of the candidate; and, d) the presence of political frames versus personal frames. N=329 news items were selected from 10 traditional newspaper websites and 10 digital native media websites. It was found that the news focused mainly on political frames and political issues of the candidate; such behavior was more conclusive in the articles published in native digital media than in traditional media. Nonetheless, the study concludes that Harris’ coverage was largely based on her race-gender intersectionality and her political ties to other men
