The Implicit Function Theorem for continuous functions

In the present paper we obtain a new homological version of the implicit function theorem and some versions of the Darboux theorem. Such results are proved for continuous maps on topological manifolds. As a consequence, some versions of these classic theorems are proved when we consider differenciable (not necessarily C^1) maps.Comment: 9 pages, no figure

Bourgin-Yang versions of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem for pp-toral groups

Let VV and WW be orthogonal representations of GG with VG=WG={0}V^G= W^G=\{0\}. Let S(V)S(V ) be the sphere of VV and f:S(V)Wf : S(V ) \to W be a GG-equivariant mapping. We give an estimate for the dimension of the set Zf=f1{0}Z_f=f^{-1}\{0\} in terms of dimV \dim V and dimW\dim W, if GG is the torus Tk\mathbb T^k, or the pp-torus Zpk\mathbb Z_p^k. This extends the classical Bourgin-Yang theorem onto this class of groups. Finally, we show that for any pp-toral group GG and a GG-map f:S(V)Wf:S(V) \to W, with dimV=\dim V=\infty and dimW<\dim W<\infty, we have dimZf=\dim Z_f= \infty.Comment: Major revisio

High fire temperature changes soil aggregate stability in slash-and-burn agricultural systems

Fire is a key controlling factor in ecosystem dynamics worldwide, especially, in tropical areas under slash-and-burn agricultural systems. Farmers use fire as a tool to clean the land, and benefit from nutrient enrichment from ash-soil heating. However, fire can cause some detrimental effects on soil systems, such as organic carbon depletion, increased soil erodibility, and changes to aggregate stability. In this study, an experimental fire was applied to a plot of land following the local traditional practice of slash-and-burn. The fire temperature was monitored in the field, and its effect on soil aggregate stability was assessed. The fire temperature on soil surface was measured in four trenches, and it ranged from 355 to 660 °C (average 484 ± 142 °C). The fire temperature did not affect soil organic matter content. However, aggregate stability increased by 10 % in comparison to unburned soil. Moreover, the geometric mean diameter of burned soil was 20 % higher than that of unburned soil. In conclusion, high fire temperature changes soil aggregate stability in slash-and-burn agricultural systems

The objective of this paper was to analyze the São Paulo State interests in the reform of its police, and in the organization of a Physical Education School, and, in particular, observe and analyze its prerogatives regarding to the construction of a national identity. For this was done a historical research which had as sources, government documents and the newspaper “Correio Paulistano” between the years 1906 and 1913.

Due to the instability of markets and the intense competition among companies, detailed scheduling has increasingly become a challenge to management. Companies that focus on the improvement of PPC activities demand tools to meet their needs, such as the finite capacity scheduling tool, also known as Advanced Planning and Scheduling System (APS) to improve delivery times, effective scheduling, and control of the firmed order. This paper aims to identify the needs and difficulties of the detailed production scheduling, the critical factors for implementation, and the benefits that the advanced scheduling systems (APS) can provide. The method used was a survey of companies affiliated to the Federation of Industries of São Paulo (FIESP). The results showed that the detailed production scheduling is a complex activity for most companies, especially for those that adopt make to order strategy (MTO). The majority of companies surveyed use the MRP planning model, but their goals can be more easily achieved with the use of advanced programming systems (APS). Financial costs and lack of training are still limiting factors to implementing those systems

Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) struggle to attract and retain talented employees to remain competitive. An appreciative inquiry using theory of attractive quality was conducted to develop a Talent Management Model (TM) to attract and retain talents. The themes that emerged included transparency in recruitment, workforce diversity, institutional mission, values and image, and work environment

Distributed Cinema: Interactive, Networked Spectatorship In The Age Of Digital Media

Digital media has changed much of how people watch, consume and interact with digital media. The loss of indexicality, or the potential infidelity between an image and its source, contributes to a distrust of images. The ubiquity of interactive media changes aesthetics of images, as viewers begin to expect interactivity. Networked media changes not only the ways in which viewers access media, but also how they communicate with each other about this media. The Tulse Luper Suitcases encapsulates all of these phenomena
