NASA Standard GAS Can Satellite
This paper describes a new direction in small low cost spacecraft. This 150 pound satellite provides access to conduct experiments in space on an economical and short term basis. It can be used by commercial as well as scientific institutions. Currently called the XSAT, it was developed by NASA in cooperation with Defense Systems Inc. (DSI) of McLean, Virginia. XSAT provides for experimental payloads up to 50 pounds, 50 watt hours per day, one megabyte data storage, three day command memory and packetized protocol. Structural and thermal designs can handle worst case loads of the STS manned launch vehicle. XSAT can be operated by an experimenter using a personal computer from a ground-based station either locally or over normal telephone lines. An Attitude Control System (ACS) and/or propulsion system is added to XSAT on a mission peculiar basis in order to accommodate the requirements of each specific payload
Gamma-rays from Galactic Black Hole Candidates with Stochastic Particle Acceleration
We consider stochastic particle acceleration in plasmas around stellar mass
black holes to explain the emissions above 1 MeV from Galactic black hole
candidates. We show that for certain parameter regimes, electrons can overcome
Coulomb losses and be accelerated beyond the thermal distribution to form a new
population, whose distribution is broad and usually not a power law; the peak
energy of the distribution is determined by the balance between acceleration
and cooling, with particles piling up around it. Radiation by inverse Compton
scattering off the thermal (from background) and non-thermal (produced by
acceleration) particles can in principle explain the hard X-ray to gamma-ray
emissions from black hole candidates. We present model fits of Cyg X-1 and GRO
J0422 in 50 keV -- 5 MeV region observed with OSSE and COMPTEL.Comment: 2 figures, to appear in March 20 of ApJ
Effective Dynamics in Bianchi Type II Loop Quantum Cosmology
We numerically investigate the solutions to the effective equations of the
Bianchi II model within the "improved" Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) dynamics.
The matter source is a massless scalar field. We perform a systematic study of
the space of solutions, and focus on the behavior of several geometrical
observables. We show that the big-bang singularity is replaced by a bounce and
the point-like singularities do not saturate the energy density bound. There
are up to three directional bounces in the scale factors, one global bounce in
the expansion, the shear presents up to four local maxima and can be zero at
the bounce. This allows for solutions with density larger than the maximal
density for the isotropic and Bianchi I cases. The asymptotic behavior is shown
to behave like that of a Bianchi I model, and the effective solutions connect
anisotropic solutions even when the shear is zero at the bounce. All known
facts of Bianchi I are reproduced. In the "vacuum limit", solutions are such
that almost all the dynamics is due to the anisotropies. Since Bianchi II plays
an important role in the Bianchi IX model and the Belinskii, Khalatnikov,
Lifshitz (BKL) conjecture, our results can provide an intuitive understanding
of the behavior in the vicinity of general space-like singularities, when
loop-geometric corrections are present.Comment: 24 pages, 26 figure
Lidocaine for systemic sclerosis: a double-blind randomized clinical trial
Background: Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma; SSc) is an orphan disease with the highest case-specific mortality of any connective-tissue disease. Excessive collagen deposit in affected tissues is a key for the disease's pathogenesis and comprises most of the clinical manifestations. Lidocaine seems to be an alternative treatment for scleroderma considering that: a) the patient's having excessive collagen deposits in tissues affected by scleroderma; b) the patient's demonstrating increased activity of the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase, an essential enzyme for the biosynthesis of collagen; and c) lidocaine's reducing the activity of prolyl hydroxylase. the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of lidocaine in treating scleroderma.Methods: A randomized double-blind clinical trial included 24 patients with scleroderma randomized to receive lidocaine or placebo intravenously in three cycles of ten days each, with a one-month interval between them. Outcomes: cutaneous (modified Rodnan skin score), oesophageal (manometry) and microvascular improvement (nailfold capillaroscopy); improvement in subjective self-assessment and in quality of life (HAQ).Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups for any outcome after the treatment and after 6-months follow-up. Improvement in modified Rodnan skin score occurred in 66.7% and 50% of placebo and lidocaine group, respectively (p = 0.408). Both groups showed an improvement in subjective self-assessment, with no difference between them.Conclusions: Despite the findings of a previous cohort study favouring the use of lidocaine, this study demonstrated that lidocaine at this dosage and means of administration showed a lack of efficacy for treating scleroderma despite the absence of significant adverse effects. Ascaroside Expression in Caenorhabditis elegans Is Strongly Dependent on Diet and Developmental Stage
Background:
The ascarosides form a family of small molecules that have been isolated from cultures of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. They are often referred to as “dauer pheromones” because most of them induce formation of long-lived and highly stress resistant dauer larvae. More recent studies have shown that ascarosides serve additional functions as social signals and mating pheromones. Thus, ascarosides have multiple functions. Until now, it has been generally assumed that ascarosides are constitutively expressed during nematode development.
Methodology/Principal Findings:
Cultures of C. elegans were developmentally synchronized on controlled diets. Ascarosides released into the media, as well as stored internally, were quantified by LC/MS. We found that ascaroside biosynthesis and release were strongly dependent on developmental stage and diet. The male attracting pheromone was verified to be a blend of at least four ascarosides, and peak production of the two most potent mating pheromone components, ascr#3 and asc#8 immediately preceded or coincided with the temporal window for mating. The concentration of ascr#2 increased under starvation conditions and peaked during dauer formation, strongly supporting ascr#2 as the main population density signal (dauer pheromone). After dauer formation, ascaroside production largely ceased and dauer larvae did not release any ascarosides. These findings show that both total ascaroside production and the relative proportions of individual ascarosides strongly correlate with these compounds' stage-specific biological functions.
Conclusions/Significance:
Ascaroside expression changes with development and environmental conditions. This is consistent with multiple functions of these signaling molecules. Knowledge of such differential regulation will make it possible to associate ascaroside production to gene expression profiles (transcript, protein or enzyme activity) and help to determine genetic pathways that control ascaroside biosynthesis. In conjunction with findings from previous studies, our results show that the pheromone system of C. elegans mimics that of insects in many ways, suggesting that pheromone signaling in C. elegans may exhibit functional homology also at the sensory level. In addition, our results provide a strong foundation for future behavioral modeling studies
Influence of Annealing on the Optical and Scintillation Properties of CaWO Single Crystals
We investigate the influence of oxygen annealing on the room temperature
optical and scintillation properties of CaWO single crystals that are being
produced for direct Dark Matter search experiments. The applied annealing
procedure reduces the absorption coefficient at the peak position of the
scintillation spectrum ( nm) by a factor of and leads to an
even larger reduction of the scattering coefficient. Furthermore, the annealing
has no significant influence on the \emph{intrinsic} light yield. An additional
absorption occurring at nm suggests the formation of O hole
centers. Light-yield measurements at room temperature where one crystal surface
was mechanically roughened showed an increase of the \emph{measured} light
yield by and an improvement of the energy resolution at 59.5 keV by
for the annealed crystal. We ascribe this result to the reduction of
the absorption coefficient while the surface roughening is needed to compensate
for the also observed reduction of the scattering coefficient after annealing
NMR and Metabolomics—A Roadmap for the Future
Metabolomics investigates global metabolic alterations associated with chemical, biological, physiological, or pathological processes. These metabolic changes are measured with various analytical platforms including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). While LC-MS methods are becoming increasingly popular in the field of metabolomics (accounting for more than 70% of published metabolomics studies to date), there are considerable benefits and advantages to NMR-based methods for metabolomic studies. In fact, according to PubMed, more than 926 papers on NMR-based metabolomics were published in 2021—the most ever published in a given year. This suggests that NMR-based metabolomics continues to grow and has plenty to offer to the scientific community. This perspective outlines the growing applications of NMR in metabolomics, highlights several recent advances in NMR technologies for metabolomics, and provides a roadmap for future advancements
PRIVATE SAVINGS IN TRANSITION ECONOMIES: ARE THERE TERMS OF TRADE SHOCKS?
The paper examines the impact of terms of trade shocks on private savings in the transition economies after accounting for the effect of other determinants. Economic agents in the transition economies are subject to tight credit constraints which are more pronounced during bad state of nature. Thus, adverse shocks to commodity prices in the world market can force them to reduce savings by a larger amount than they would otherwise have. Empirical analysis using a dynamic panel model and data from twenty one transition economies confirm that most of the determinants of savings identified in the literature also apply to the transition economies. Favorable movements in both the permanent and transitory components of the terms of trade have a significant positive impact on private savings with transitory movements having a larger impact than the permanent component. This reflects the lack of access to foreign borrowing that many of the transition economies have faced during the last decade. Although the impact of terms of trade shocks are found to be asymmetric, the magnitude of the impact appears to be small.
