In our earlier papers we constructed examples of 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply-connected cell-like Peano continua, called {\sl Snake space}. In the sequel we introduced the functor $SC(-,-)$ defined on the category of all spaces with base points and continuous mappings. For the circle $S^1$, the space $SC(S^1, \ast)$ is a Snake space. In the present paper we study the higher-dimensional homology and homotopy properties of the spaces $SC(Z, \ast)$ for any path-connected compact spaces $Z$

Oxidation States of Graphene: Insights from Computational Spectroscopy

When it is oxidized, graphite can be easily exfoliated forming graphene oxide (GO). GO is a critical intermediate for massive production of graphene, and it is also an important material with various application potentials. With many different oxidation species randomly distributed on the basal plane, GO has a complicated nonstoichiometric atomic structure that is still not well understood in spite of of intensive studies involving many experimental techniques. Controversies often exist in experimental data interpretation. We report here a first principles study on binding energy of carbon 1s orbital in GO. The calculated results can be well used to interpret experimental X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data and provide a unified spectral assignment. Based on the first principles understanding of XPS, a GO structure model containing new oxidation species epoxy pair and epoxy-hydroxy pair is proposed. Our results demonstrate that first principles computational spectroscopy provides a powerful means to investigate GO structure.Comment: accepted by J. Chem. Phy

On the homology of the Harmonic Archipelago

We calculate the singular homology and \v{C}ech cohomology groups of the Harmonic archipelago. As a corollary, we prove that this space is not homotopy equivalent to the Griffiths space. This is interesting in view of Eda's proof that the first singular homology groups of these spaces are isomorphic

Phase--coherence Effects in Antidot Lattices: A Semiclassical Approach to Bulk Conductivity

We derive semiclassical expressions for the Kubo conductivity tensor. Within our approach the oscillatory parts of the diagonal and Hall conductivity are given as sums over contributions from classical periodic orbits in close relation to Gutzwiller's trace formula for the density of states. Produção do conhecimento na área de enfermagem na Argentina, Chile, Paraguai e Uruguai

Research is being pointed out as a path to nursing recognition. The knowledge production concerning the tendencies of research lines in nursing during the 90’s, in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, took part of a study that had the purpose to know the impact of the nursing profession practice on health in Latin America and in the Caribbean Islands. The methodology used was the exploratory quantitative research, and the database used were Lilacs and Medline. The most frequent investigation themes refer to nursing profession (up to 13.2%). Regarding the lines of investigation in nursing, we found out that the nursing professional stood out with 41%, being technique and methodology the main approaches. Chile was the country that produced the largest amount of research, 86.8% of the summaries. Referring to the financing source, no reference is made in 86.8% of the summaries. With reference to the number of authors involved with the published literature, 50.7% of the literature have only one author. The nurses should be aware to invest in the enlargement of this production.La investigación está resaltando un camino en pro del reconocimiento de la enfermería. En la producción de conocimientos, las tendencias de las líneas de investigación en enfermería en la Argentina, Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay, en la década del 90, fue parte de un estudio cuya finalidad fue conocer el impacto de la profesión para la salud en Latinoamérica y Caribe. La metodología utilizada fue la investigación exploratoria cuantitativa y las bases de datos son las fuentes de información Lilacs y Medline. Los temas de investigación más frecuentes versan cerca de la profesión de enfermería con 13,2 %. En las líneas de investigación en enfermería, destacáse la profesional con el 41%, siendo abordadas la técnica y la metodologia. Chile produce el 86,8 % de los resúmenes. La fuente de financiamiento de los trabajos no es referida en el, 86,8% de los resúmenes y, el 50,7 % de las publicaciones poseen un autor. A ENFERMAGEM E OS CUIDADOS À SAÚDE DA FAMÍLIA RURAL

This article makes a reflection on the rural family and nursing in the south area of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil . These families are more and more impoverished and excluded from the public politics, because capitalist agriculture is considered a sign of modernity by the government. With the intention to support their survival, the rural families members use their bodies as force and instrument of work. In that way, they frequently are careless of their bodies, working too many hours, being exposed to atmospheric variations and to chemical products. They make old and spend their bodies prematurely, despite that, they do not succeed in bringing quality to their lives. Therefore, Nursing and Obstetrics Faculty of the Federal University of Pelotas demonstrates interest in supporting this population in several works and projects, with the purpose to knowing/ understanding their members, investing in education to form citizens, contributing this way to the quality and life of the rural families.Este artículo hace una reflexión sobre la familia rural y la enfermería de la región sur de Rio Grande del Sur, Brasil. Esas familias están cada vez más empobrecidas y excluidas de las políticas públicas, visto que el gobierno considera modernidad la agricultura capitalista. Con la intención de mantener su sobrevivencia, las familias rurales hacen uso de su cuerpo como fuerza e instrumento de trabajo. De esa manera, muchas veces las familias rurales no tienen cuidado con el cuerpo, trabajando muchas horas, exponiéndose a las variaciones atmosféricas o a los productos químicos. Envejecen y gastan el cuerpo precozmente. A pesar del esfuerzo no consiguen tener calidad en su vida. Así, la Facultad de Enfermería y Obstetricia de la Universidad Federal de Pelotas, Brasil, demuestra el interés en la asistencia a esa población en diversos trabajos y proyectos, con la finalidad de conocer/comprender invistiendo en educación para la formación de miembros integrantes de estas poblaciones, contribuyendo de esta forma a su calidad de vida.Este artigo faz uma reflexão sobre a família rural e a enfermagem da região sul do Rio Grande do Sul. As famílias estão cada vez mais empobrecidas e excluídas das políticas públicas, visto que o governo considera modernidade a agricultura capitalista. Com o intuito de manter sua sobrevivência, as famílias rurais fazem uso do seu corpo como força e instrumento de trabalho. Dessa forma, muitas vezes, não têm cuidado com o corpo, trabalhando muitas horas, expondo-se às variações atmosféricas e aos produtos químicos. Envelhecem e desgastam o corpo precocemente. Apesar do esforço, não conseguem ter qualidade na sua vida. 137,138,139^{137,138,139}La(nn, γ\gamma) cross sections constrained with statistical decay properties of 138,139,140^{138,139,140}La nuclei

The nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions of $^{138,139,140}$La were measured using the $^{139}$La($^{3}$He, $\alpha$), $^{139}$La($^{3}$He, $^{3}$He$^\prime$) and $^{139}$La(d, p) reactions. The particle-$\gamma$ coincidences were recorded with the silicon particle telescope (SiRi) and NaI(Tl) (CACTUS) arrays. In the context of these experimental results, the low-energy enhancement in the A$\sim$140 region is discussed. The $^{137,138,139}$La($n, \gamma)$ cross sections were calculated at $s$- and $p$-process temperatures using the experimentally measured nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions. Good agreement is found between $^{139}$La($n, \gamma)$ calculated cross sections and previous measurements
