    Emergence Patterns of the Seedcorn Maggot, Delia platura (Diptera: Anthomyiidae)

    Time of emergence of seedcorn maggot (SCM), Delia platura (Meigen), adults that developed from eggs laid in field plots from May through October 1981, was determined during 1981, 1982, and 1983. Some SCM that developed from eggs laid as early as May 1981, overwintered, and the proportion of SCM overwintering increased when eggs were laid June to October. Adults emerged from overwintered pupae from April through October 1982, and in May and June 1983. Adults of the closely related bean seed maggot (BSM), D. florilega (Zetterstedt), also emerged in the plots, but in smaller numbers than SCM.     Assessing Change in Social Support During Late Life

    The purpose of this study is to evaluate change in 14 measures of social support with data provided by a nationwide longitudinal study of older adults. The findings reveal that fairly substantial change took place during the three-year follow-up period. More important, the data indicate that change is not uniform or systematic across the entire study sample. Instead, there appears to be considerable individual-level change taking place.     South Carolina is just completing a significant roadwork program where bonds have been leveraged so that 27 years of maintenance and construction activities could be completed in just seven years. During this period, the number of South Carolina interstate work-zone-related crashes and fatalities has been rising, with the state accounting for nearly 10% of the nation’s work-zone fatalities. The number of crashes in work zones in South Carolina nearly tripled in five years, increasing from 677 in 1998 to 2,601 in 2003. In all of these years, a leading cause of vehicle crashes is driving too fast for conditions. Because of the increasing number of work-zone crashes and fatalities in South Carolina, research into innovative ways to improve driver attention and reduce vehicle speeds in work zones has become a priority for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT)
