    Multivector Field Formulation of Hamiltonian Field Theories: Equations and Symmetries

    We state the intrinsic form of the Hamiltonian equations of first-order Classical Field theories in three equivalent geometrical ways: using multivector fields, jet fields and connections. Thus, these equations are given in a form similar to that in which the Hamiltonian equations of mechanics are usually given. Then, using multivector fields, we study several aspects of these equations, such as the existence and non-uniqueness of solutions, and the integrability problem. In particular, these problems are analyzed for the case of Hamiltonian systems defined in a submanifold of the multimomentum bundle. Furthermore, the existence of first integrals of these Hamiltonian equations is considered, and the relation between {\sl Cartan-Noether symmetries} and {\sl general symmetries} of the system is discussed. Noether's theorem is also stated in this context, both the ``classical'' version and its generalization to include higher-order Cartan-Noether symmetries. Finally, the equivalence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms is also discussed.Comment: Some minor mistakes are corrected. Bibliography is updated. To be published in J. Phys.     En el presente artículo se resume cómo se ha elaborado un componente para la Biblioteca Virtual de la ESPOL, que busca facilitar la lectura, por medio de libros digitales, completos y de manera legal a través del préstamo de los mismo, de manera online, usando la tecnología de hoy en día, que se encuentra cada vez mas al alcance de todos, haciendo uso de la misma con mayor frecuencia gracias a su accesibilidad, rapidez e interactividad. El componente constará de dos módulos, el administrador en donde se administrará el material bibliográfico y el módulo usuario que permitirá a los estudiantes de la comunidad politécnica acceder mediante su usuario y contraseña para así poder realizar el préstamo del material que necesite. Para el desarrollo de este componente se han utilizado tecnologías modernas como Responsive Web Design Calibre, eCub y las tecnologías clásicas como MySQL, PHP, JavaScript, Jquery, entre otros

    Structure and bonding of halonium compounds

    The geometrical parameters and the bonding in [D···X···D]+ halonium compounds, where D is a Lewis base with N as the donor atom and X is Cl, Br, or I, have been investigated through a combined structural and computational study. Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) searches have revealed linear and symmetrical [D···X···D]+ frameworks with neutral donors. By means of density functional theory (DFT), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), and energy decomposition analyses (EDA) calculations, we have studied the effect of various halogen atoms (X) on the [D···X···D]+ framework, the effect of different nitrogen-donor groups (D) attached to an iodonium cation (X = I), and the influence of the electron density alteration on the [D···I···D]+ halonium bond by variation of the R substituents at the N-donor upon the symmetry, strength, and nature of the interaction. The physical origin of the interaction arises from a subtle interplay between electrostatic and orbital contributions (σ-hole bond). Interaction energies as high as 45 kcal/mol suggest that halonium bonds can be exploited for the development of novel halonium transfer agents, in asymmetric halofunctionalization or as building blocks in supramolecular chemistry

    Analysis of the legume–rhizobia symbiosis in shrubs from central western Spain

Symbiotic promiscuity and effectiveness were studied using cross-inoculation experiments with shrubby species.Material and Results: Six new bradyrhizobia strains were isolated from nodules collected from wild plants of six leguminous species, Cytisus balansae, C. multiflorus, C. scoparius, C. striatus, Genista hystrix and Retama sphaerocarpa. These isolates were genetically characterized by 16S rDNA partial sequencing and random amplification of polymorphic DNA2013PCR fingerprinting. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that these isolates could represent three new Bradyrhizobium species. Shrubby legumes and bradyrhizobia displayed a high symbiotic promiscuity both for infectivity and effectiveness. Symbioses were effective in more than 70% of the associations established by four of the six plant species.Conclusions: Native woody legumes in western Spain are nodulated by Bradyrhizobium strains. The high degree of symbiotic promiscuity and effectiveness highlights the complex dynamics of these communities in wild ecosystems under a Mediterranean-type climate. Furthermore, the results from this study suggest a potential importance of inoculation for these legume species in soil-restoration projects.Significance and Impact of the Study: This is the first study, to our knowledge, that combines both molecular analysis and pot trials to study the rhizobia2013legume symbiosis for wild legumes

    El objetivo de esta revisión es presentar la evidencia disponible que relaciona la infección por virus con el desarrollo de periodontitis. Esta relación se ha visto con los virus de la familia herpes, sobretodo el citomegalovirus humano (CMV) y el virus Epstein-Barr (VEB), así como con el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (HIV). Las infecciones por herpesvirus generalmente sucede en dos fases, durante la primoinfección la clínica suele ser leve o asintomática y a esta le sigue una fase asintomática en la que el virus se encuentra en estado de latencia. Dicho estado se verá interrumpido esporádicamente por periodos de activación en los que se produce una replicación viral y posiblemente se dé una manifestación de la enfermedad que explicaría, en parte, el progreso en episodios de la enfermedad periodontal. De hecho, algunas de las causas que llevan a la reactivación del virus también se consideran factores de riesgo de la enfermedad periodontal y podrían relacionar a ambas patologías. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the evidence supporting the hypothesis that viral infection plays a role in the development of periodontitis. This relationship has been found mainly with the herpesvirus family, especially with human cytomegalovirus (CMV) and with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but also with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The herpesvirus infection generally involves a mild or asymptomatic primary phase followed by an asymptomatic latent phase interrupted sporadically by periods of activation, where viral replication and possibly clinical disease become manifest and which will in part, explain the episodic progressive nature of human periodontitis. In fact, herpesvirus reactivation is triggered by a number of immunosuppressing factors, some of which have also been shown to be risk indicators of periodontal disease and which could relate both patologies

    Quantum Conductance Steps in Solutions of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

    We have prepared solutions of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in Aroclor 1254, a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls. The solutions are stable at room temperature. Transport measurements were performed using a scanning--tunneling probe on a sample prepared by spin--coating of the solution on gold substrates. Conductance steps were clearly seen. An histogram of a high number of traces shows maximum peaks at integer values of the conductance quantum G0=2e2/hG_0 = 2e^2/h, demonstrating ballistic transport at room temperature along the carbon nanotube over distances longer than 1.4μm1.4\mu m.Comment: 4 pages and 2 figure

    Women are still under-represented in science and technology because there is a bias in the different evaluation processes from the admission of oral communications at conferences to the access to more qualified positions. In this study, we compared the participation and visibility of female ecologists in the IV Iberian Ecological Conference (CIE4) with the Annual Swiss Conference on Ecology, Evolution, Systematics, Biogeography and Conservation (Biology16) where a method of blind evaluation was applied. In both conferences, and after active selection by conference committees, male delegates presented proportionately more regular oral contributions than female ones, although these differences were marginally significant. In the Biology16, this bias was due to lower female applicants for oral contributions, and in the CIE4, to a lower selection rate of female oral contributions. In the CIE4, the higher male presence in oral contributions was consistent with male greater visibility, whereas female visibility was higher in the Biology16. This different visibility was caused by contrasting selection for invited speakers; being male researches preferentially invited at the CIE4, but female ones at the Biology16. Implementing a blind review system of contributions and active policies to promote the participation of women as invited speakers may reduce the differences in visibility and could contribute in the medium term to eliminate the bias against women in the selection of oral contributions at the Iberian conferences

    The emergence and spread of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has shown that the techno-scientific system of research, development, innovation and dissemination presents problems of predictability and risk management and a high level of uncertainty. This paper analyses the process of production, management and dissemination of knowledge, focusing on the techno-scientific and social media and the modes of scientific information and communication regarding COVID-19. First, we analyse the deficiencies in the techno-scientific model of knowledge production and management during the COVID-19 crisis. Second, we explore the treatment and dissemination of information in the new modes of information and social communication, where a situation of infoxication has been created. Third, the aim is to assess the effectiveness of communication and discussion among scientific communities. To do this, we used the Web of Science database to perform a bibliometric study on research publications related to the virus, its disease and its treatment as of 2020.La aparición y difusión pandémica del virus SARS-CoV-2 ha evidenciado que el sistema tecnocientífico de investigación, desarrollo, innovación y difusión presenta problemas de previsibilidad, de gestión de riesgos y un alto nivel de incertidumbre. Este trabajo analiza el proceso de producción, gestión y difusión del conocimiento centrándose en los modos y medios tecnocientíficos y sociales de información y comunicación científica sobre la COVID-19. Para ello, en primer lugar, se ha realizado un análisis de los déficits del modelo tecnocientífico de producción y gestión del conocimiento durante la crisis de la COVID-19. En segundo lugar, se ha estudiado el tratamiento y difusión de información en los nuevos modos de información y comunicación social donde se ha generado una circunstancia de infoxicación. En tercer lugar, para evaluar si está teniendo lugar una efectiva comunicación y discusión entre las comunidades científicas, se ha realizado un estudio bibliométrico a partir de los datos de la Web of Science sobre la publicación de resultados de investigación desde 2020 en relación con el virus, su enfermedad y tratamiento

    Expanding CGL: The CGL double-adiabatic approximation in the Expanding Solar Wind

    Different in situ satellite observations within 0.3 to 1 AU from the Sun reveal deviations in the thermodynamics of solar wind expansion. Specifically, these deviations challenge the applicability of the double adiabatic or CGL theory, indicating potential influences such as perpendicular heating and/or parallel cooling of ions. The study aims to investigate the plasma expansion phenomena using the Expanding Box Model (EBM) coupled with an ideal MHD description of the plasma. The primary objective is to understand the observed deviations from the CGL predictions, and how the expansion can affect the conservation of the adiabatic invariants, particularly focusing on the impact of transverse expansion on the CGL equations. To address the plasma expansion, we employed the Expanding Box Model (EBM) coupled with the ideal-MHD formalism used for CGL theory. This model provides a unique system of reference co-moving with the solar wind, allowing for the incorporation of transverse expansion into the double adiabatic equations. Solving the equations for different magnetic field profiles, we compute the evolution of anisotropy and plasma beta, which deviates from CGL predictions and empirical observations. This deviation is attributed to the plasma cooling effect induced by the Expanding Box Model (EBM). Results suggest that heating mechanisms play a crucial role in counteracting plasma cooling during expansion.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
