New method for critical failure prediction of complex systems
Rigorous analytical technique, called criticality determination methodology /or CD technique/ determines the probability that a given complex system will successfully achieve stated objectives. The CD technique identifies critical elements of the system by a failure mode and effects analysis
Persuading young consumers to make healthy nutritional decisions.
There is widespread concern that consumers are making inappropriate decisions about what they eat, leading to a growing incidence of obesity and chronic illness which will strain public health budgets and damage economic competitiveness. Inappropriate nutritional decisions and obesity are of particular public policy importance where young consumers are concerned. The paper investigates how consumers, particularly young consumers, can be persuaded to make better nutritional decisions voluntarily, and how government and commercial persuasive communications can be deployed to facilitate such decisions. The key conclusions are that the mass media are not a reliable vehicle for bringing about the desired behavioural changes, but that new media, such as the Internet and âtext messagingâ should be used to deliver tailored messages to individuals, particularly younger consumers
Lightweight, low compression aircraft diesel engine
The feasibility of converting a spark ignition aircraft engine to the diesel cycle was investigated. Procedures necessary for converting a single cylinder GTS10-520 are described as well as a single cylinder diesel engine test program. The modification of the engine for the hot port cooling concept is discussed. A digital computer graphics simulation of a twin engine aircraft incorporating the diesel engine and Hot Fort concept is presented showing some potential gains in aircraft performance. Sample results of the computer program used in the simulation are included

Correlating Pedestrian Flows and Search Engine Queries
An important challenge for ubiquitous computing is the development of
techniques that can characterize a location vis-a-vis the richness and
diversity of urban settings. In this paper we report our work on correlating
urban pedestrian flows with Google search queries. Using longitudinal data we
show pedestrian flows at particular locations can be correlated with the
frequency of Google search terms that are semantically relevant to those
locations. Our approach can identify relevant content, media, and

Realising context-sensitive mobile messaging
Mobile technologies aim to assist people as they move from place to place going about their daily work and social routines. Established and very popular mobile technologies include short-text messages and multimedia messages with newer growing technologies including Bluetooth mobile data transfer protocols and mobile web access.Here we present new work which combines all of the above technologies to fulfil some of the predictions for future context aware messaging. We present a context sensitive mobile messaging system which derives context in the form of physical locations through location sensing and the co-location of people through Bluetooth familiarity

Gamma-ray emission revealed at the western edge of SNR G344.7-0.1
We report on the investigation of a very high energy (VHE), Galactic
gamma-ray source recently discovered at >50GeV using the Large Area Telescope
(LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. This object, 2FHL
J1703.4-4145, displays a very hard >50GeV spectrum with a photon index ~1.2 in
the 2FHL catalog and, as such, is one of the most extreme sources in the 2FHL
sub-sample of Galactic objects. A detailed analysis of the available
multi-wavelength data shows that this source is located on the western edge of
the supernova remnant (SNR) G344.7--0.1, along with extended TeV source, HESS
J1702-420. The observations and the spectral energy distribution modeling
support a scenario where this gamma-ray source is the byproduct of the
interaction between the SNR shock and the dense surrounding medium, with
escaping cosmic rays (CRs) diffusing into the dense environment and interacting
with a large local cloud, generating the observed TeV emission. If confirmed,
an interaction between the SNR CRs and a nearby cloud would make 2FHL
J1703.4-4145 another promising candidate for efficient particle acceleration of
the 2FHL Galactic sample, following the first candidate from our previous
investigation of a likely shock-cloud interaction occurring on the West edge of

Spatiotemporal correlations of handset-based service usages
We study spatiotemporal correlations and temporal diversities of
handset-based service usages by analyzing a dataset that includes detailed
information about locations and service usages of 124 users over 16 months. By
constructing the spatiotemporal trajectories of the users we detect several
meaningful places or contexts for each one of them and show how the context
affects the service usage patterns. We find that temporal patterns of service
usages are bound to the typical weekly cycles of humans, yet they show maximal
activities at different times. We first discuss their temporal correlations and
then investigate the time-ordering behavior of communication services like
calls being followed by the non-communication services like applications. We
also find that the behavioral overlap network based on the clustering of
temporal patterns is comparable to the communication network of users. Our
approach provides a useful framework for handset-based data analysis and helps
us to understand the complexities of information and communications technology
enabled human behavior.Comment: 11 pages, 15 figure
