TransArea
The future of area studies lies in opening out into TransArea studies, which tie together area-connected competencies with transdisciplinary research practices. It is one of the loftiest and most urgent duties of philology to lift up this treasure in the awareness of the special relevance of literature, and to make it democratically available to the broadest possible sections of the population
Geburt Leben Sterben Tod
Our own birth and death elude our conscious experience. The world’s literatures give us the opportunity to access the beginning and end of a life, to represent, reflect upon, and (re)stage birth, life, dying, and death. This highly mobile configuration releases a tremendous creative energy, which this volume analyzes against the backdrop of the question of the knowledge of life
Abstract
The text begins with the recovery of the so-called Serments of Strasbourg, as an exemplary text that allows us to think about literature under the sign of coexistence through the translation and acceptance of the language of the other. From there, we read a historical end of Eurocentrism and the paradigm of world literature [Weltliteratur], and the emergence of a multi-logical, archipelagic and transareal system that we call world literatures. This work aims to outline a conceptualization and a description of the main concepts and the most crucial problems of said system based on a (post)philology founded on the value of knowledge about living and coexisting.

This Potsdam lecture attempts to more closely define the object of “Romance literary studies” within the context of the literatures of the world, to define the exceptional, even essential significance of this object of study, and to prospectively inquire into future opportunities for research, study, and life in the field of Romance literary studies
