Sin embargo, la masiva acumulación de deuda externa determinó que el modelo de desarrollo adoptado colapsara en 2001.This paper analyses the model of development adopted by the Menem Administration in Argentina, when a deep structural adjustment was carried out in order to reduce the State’s burden upon the economy While the results involved important negative social effects, particularly in terms of rising unemployment and social inequality, the economy experimented high growth rates during the period. However, the massive accumulation of external indebtedness precipitated the model’s collapse in 2001

This study analyses a dataset elaborated by the author, using as sources the CVs of 414 Argentine researchers in economics, sociology, political science, and psychology affiliated with the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET). The findings indicate that the researchers’ publication patterns vary across the different scientific disciplines. Moreover, a multivariate regression analysis reveals that the place where the researchers’ doctoral studies occurred has a positive and statistically significant association with the circuit of scholarly journals in which they choose to publish.

This article analyzes the productivity and impact of Argentine scientific research in economics and sociology in Scopus and Google Scholar. The main goal of this research was to examine the effect of the orientation of researchers towards greater visibility on their productivity and academic impact in the bibliometric database Scopus. The findings indicate that researchers in economics have higher levels of productivity and impact in Scopus than their peers in sociology. On the other hand, it is observed that visibility in Scopus has a positive effect on impact, operationalized by the Scopus h-index, in both economics and sociology; while it only has a positive impact on the Google Scholar h-index in the case of sociology. Considering productivity (number of documents) in Google Scholar as the dependent variable, visibility in Scopus affects it negatively and statistically significantly only in sociology. If productivity in Scopus is analyzed, visibility in Scopus has a positive effect on both disciplines

The Prestige of Social Scientists in Spain and France: An Examination of Their h-Index Values Using Scopus and Google Scholar

We analyze the prestige of 1,500 scholars in economics, sociology, and management who have Spanish and French institutional affiliations operationalized by their h-index in Scopus and Google Scholar. We use a negative binomial count model to examine how some individual factors affect the h-index from both databases. The results show a non-monotonic relationship between the researchers’ career length and their h-index. There is a positive and statistically significant relationship between total research output and the h-index. The share of publications in English over total publications has also a positive and statistically significant effect on the h-index, except in a single case, while the share of publications in other foreign languages does not have such effect. Finally, we found that the effects of the number of citations received by documents in English (international impact) and by those in the vernacular language (local or regional impact) on the h-index vary according to the database, the country, and the discipline in questio

This paper examines the determinants of income distribution in eighteen Latin American countries during the period 1990-2016. Our main goal is to assess if trade openness is associated with a better profile of income distribution. The results of our panel data analysis demonstrate that this is indeed the case. The effect of trade openness are robust to alternative econometric models, the inclusion of several control variables such as inflation, real GDP per capita, economic growth, the workforce skill level and the real effective exchange rate, as well as two alternative indicators of trade openness, the openness index, whose utilization is widespread in the literature, and the average tariff level.

Scholarly management knowledge in the periphery: Argentina and Brazil in comparative perspective (1970-2005)

This paper examines academic management knowledge in two developing countries, Argentina and Brazil. It shows that the level of scholarliness of this type of knowledge varies greatly within countries with a similar degree of economic development. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates that the main factor behind the expansion of scholarly management knowledge in the countries under study is the institutionalization of the academic community through faculty professionalization, which is in turn influenced by the size of the economy and the state's commitment to supporting the higher education system
