The choice of banking firm : are the interest rate a significant criteria?

    Get PDF
The objective of the research is to know the factors that in Spain determine the choice of banking organization. The obtained results indicate that the dimension of the network of branches is the reason more valued. In spite of the increasing symmetry of the Spanish banking market, the preferences of the clients of the savings banks and those of the banks are not absolutely coincident, being the proximity - the main reason for election- much more valued by the former than by the latter. The existence of divergences in the preferences has also been detected according to the region and the typology of city of residence

    Europe Research Trip

    Get PDF
This project is a Research trip that will give a group of 16 Embry-Riddle students the opportunity to gain a different perspective of the Aviation industry. This experience will encourage students to learn and analyze different points of view to successfully answer the following questions: What impact does the economic system of European countries, such as Germany and France, have on the development of an aviation company, for instance Airbus and Lufthansa, compared to the aviation companies in the US? Do students learn more from a real life experience than from listening to a lecture? The project is composed of a visit to major aviation companies, such as Airbus, Lufthansa, and Condor Flugdienst, in two different cities: Toulouse in France and Frankfurt in Germany, with the idea to have real-world exposure and be able to compare different viewpoints, expectations, and future projects. This trip will also show our student body that anything is possible if there is dedication and effort and that real life experience outside a lecture in a classroom is very important in a student’s education. To prove this last point, a survey will be used to measure learning during the trip. Students travelling will be tested before and after the trip and results will be compared to see how beneficial are these trips

    Risk-tourism, risk-taking and subjective well-being: A review and synthesis

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to conceptualize the potential relationship between subjective well-being and risk-taking within ‘risk-tourism’ i.e. specific activities that involve the potential for physical injury and death and require participants to develop competencies with which to overcome the risks associated with those activities. Literature is reviewed in three fields of inquiry: subjective well-being, with specific reference to the interactions between wellbeing and tourism behavior, risk-taking in tourism and risk-tourism. The areas of interaction between risk-tourism and subjective well-being, emerging critical questions and potential areas of future inquiry are subsequently examined

    Get PDF
This project consists of developing an archive of digital material to expand on and support classroom teaching. With this material, the goal is to make a methodological contribution to facilitate students' independent learning in acquiring their professional competences within the framework of the European ECTS credits. This material is specific for the course Teaching the Fine Arts I, a core course in the five teacher training diploma programmes. Most of the students in these programmes have no background in artist training, so the syllabus has been organised to reinforce the knowledge that is regarded as essential. To this end, it has included the transmission theoretical concepts, practical exercises performed within a workshop, and the development of basic contents in order to apply this material in the classroom. Therefore, we had to update the teaching material in a digital format would make possible a new sort of dialogue with the images and offer students an interactive dimension to facilitate independent learning and teamwork, balance the differences in credits among the different diploma programmes and facilitate personalised attention in overly large groups

What if there was a stronger pharmaceutical price competition in Spain? When regulation has a similar effect to collusion

    Get PDF
This paper examines statins competition in the Spanish pharmaceutical market, where prices are highly regulated, and simulates a situation in which there is unrestricted price competition. A nested logit demand model is estimated with a panel of monthly data for pharmaceuticals prescribed from 1997 to 2005. The simulation indicates that the regulation of prices is similar in its effects to cooperation among producers, since the regulated prices are close to those that would be observed in a scenario of perfect collusion. Freedom to set prices and a regulatory framework with appropriate incentives would result in a general reduction in prices and may make the current veiled competition in the form of discounts to pharmacists become more visible. The decrease in prices would be partially offset by an increase in consumption but the net effect would be an overall decrease in expenditure. The counterfactual set-up would also lead to important changes in the market shares of both manufacturers and active ingredients, and a reversal of generic drugs. Therefore, pro-competitive regulation would be welfare-enhancing but would imply winners and losers

Generic drugs in Spain : price competition vs. moral hazard

This paper examines competition between generic and brand-name drugs in the regulated Spanish pharmaceutical market. A nested logit demand model is specified for the three most consumed therapeutic subgroups in Spain: statins (anticholesterol), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (antidepressants) and proton pump inhibitors (antiulcers). The model is estimated with instrumental variables from a panel of monthly prescription data from 1999 to 2005. The dataset distinguishes between three different levels of patients' copayments within the prescriptions and the results show that the greater the level of insurance that the patient has (and therefore the lower the patient's copayment), the lower the proportion of generic prescriptions made by physicians. It seems that the low level of copayment has delayed the penetration of generics into the Spanish market. Additionally, the estimation of the demand model suggests that the substitution rules and promotional efforts associated with the reference pricing system have increased generic market share, and that being among the first generic entrants has an additional positive effect

The primary goal of this project is to improve the learning conditions of students in two core courses in the first year of the degree programme in English Language and Literature, English Language: Descriptive Grammar I and II. In these courses, the students have to handle the grammar of a foreign language in a systematic, serious way for the first time, which proves difficult for them. In order to achieve this goal, study materials have been developed specifically for our students (level of difficulty, syllabus covered, comparison with native languages). This material has been compiled in two textbooks, in a varied collection of exercises (with differing levels of difficulty) and in an interactive website. All of this was accomplished with a working team with a great deal of cohesion and coordination, which has enabled us to achieve the main goal of the project

Selective inhibition of cancer cell self-renewal through a Quisinostat-histone H1.0 axis

Continuous cancer growth is driven by subsets of self-renewing malignant cells. Targeting of uncontrolled self-renewal through inhibition of stem cell-related signaling pathways has proven challenging. Here, we show that cancer cells can be selectively deprived of self-renewal ability by interfering with their epigenetic state. Re-expression of histone H1.0, a tumor-suppressive factor that inhibits cancer cell self-renewal in many cancer types, can be broadly induced by the clinically well-tolerated compound Quisinostat. Through H1.0, Quisinostat inhibits cancer cell self-renewal and halts tumor maintenance without affecting normal stem cell function. Quisinostat also hinders expansion of cells surviving targeted therapy, independently of the cancer types and the resistance mechanism, and inhibits disease relapse in mouse models of lung cancer. Our results identify H1.0 as a major mediator of Quisinostat's antitumor effect and suggest that sequential administration of targeted therapy and Quisinostat may be a broadly applicable strategy to induce a prolonged response in patients

    Get PDF

Non-thermal emission processes in massive binaries

In this paper, I present a general discussion of several astrophysical processes likely to play a role in the production of non-thermal emission in massive stars, with emphasis on massive binaries. Even though the discussion will start in the radio domain where the non-thermal emission was first detected, the census of physical processes involved in the non-thermal emission from massive stars shows that many spectral domains are concerned, from the radio to the very high energies. First, the theoretical aspects of the non-thermal emission from early-type stars will be addressed. The main topics that will be discussed are respectively the physics of individual stellar winds and their interaction in binary systems, the acceleration of relativistic electrons, the magnetic field of massive stars, and finally the non-thermal emission processes relevant to the case of massive stars. Second, this general qualitative discussion will be followed by a more quantitative one, devoted to the most probable scenario where non-thermal radio emitters are massive binaries. I will show how several stellar, wind and orbital parameters can be combined in order to make some semi-quantitative predictions on the high-energy counterpart to the non-thermal emission detected in the radio domain. These theoretical considerations will be followed by a census of results obtained so far, and related to this topic...
