Journeying as Amateur and Professional – A Somatic Movement Approach

    Get PDF
This account is an interactive case study co-authored by a teacher and her student on the topic of moving from amateur to professional. It highlights the role of somatic education in equalizing the experience of amateurs and professionals as well as pointing to specific curricula, public performances, participatory events and volunteer work that are made uniquely available to students of programs related to Dynamic EmbodimentTM Somatic Movement Therapy (known as the Somatic Movement Therapy Training – SMTT from 1991-2005). Written in first-person narrative style (Powdermaker 1966), this inquiry supports the primary methodology of somatic education – the process of self-discovery “from within” (Hanna 1976) emphasizing the physical body with a focus on bodily proprioception and kinesthetic awareness – as well as the humanistic nature of the student-teacher relationship and the value of each in performance and education.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
This study examined the connections between procedural and conceptual knowledge of addition and subtraction of fractions with the problem-posing skills of prospective primary teachers. The applied method was a correlational study with structural equation modeling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) analysis. The sample in this research was 101 third-year students from a primary teacher education study program of a public university in Riau, Indonesia. The results showed that prospective primary teachers have high procedural knowledge and problem-posing skills on addition and subtraction. However, they have poor performance on problems related to conceptual knowledge of addition and subtraction of fractions. Then, the results also revealed a significant connection between procedural and conceptual knowledge with problem-posing skills on addition and subtraction of fractions of prospective primary teachers. Improving prospective primary teachers’ procedural and conceptual knowledge could raise their problem-posing skills on adding and subtracting fractions

    Get PDF

DTFH6116D00049L, 693JJ319F000428The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiated the Testing and Pilot Design, Development, and Evaluation Framework project with the objective of developing a framework that enables collaboration among Automated Driving System (ADS) developers and Infrastructure Owners and Operators (IOO) for research, testing, and development activities. This Framework report is based upon feedback FHWA received through extensive engagement and input from ADS developer and roadway stakeholders, including automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, technology companies, and State, and regional government entities. The intent is for the Framework to advance each of the stakeholder\u2019s valuable knowledge and information towards the realization of a safe system approach. The findings contained in the Framework support that research and development tests need to be collaborative and thoughtfully structured with regards to goals, design, monitoring mechanisms, and evaluation schemes to advance the state of knowledge gained through these engagements. Additionally, this Framework provides collaboration elements and considerations that apply throughout the research and development testing phases, including aids and checklists, collaboration opportunities, and real-world examples from across the country. While the focus of this Framework is primarily directed toward ADS development and roadway testing\u2014benefits of utilizing the collaboration Framework for higher levels of driving automation can be realized and also extend to development of other types of transportation technologies as well

Cofilin overactivation improves hippocampus-dependent short-term memory

    Get PDF
Many living organisms of the animal kingdom have the fundamental ability to form and retrieve memories. Most information is initially stored as short-term memory, which is then converted to a more stable long-term memory through a process called memory consolidation. At the neuronal level, synaptic plasticity is crucial for memory storage. It includes the formation of new spines, as well as the modification of existing spines, thereby tuning and shaping synaptic efficacy. Cofilin critically contributes to memory processes as upon activation, it regulates the shape of dendritic spines by targeting actin filaments. We previously found that prolonged activation of cofilin in hippocampal neurons attenuated the formation of long-term object-location memories. Because the modification of spine shape and structure is also essential for short-term memory formation, we determined whether overactivation of hippocampal cofilin also influences the formation of short-term memories. To this end, mice were either injected with an adeno-associated virus expressing catalytically active cofilin, or an eGFP control, in the hippocampus. We show for the first time that cofilin overactivation improves short-term memory formation in the object-location memory task, without affecting anxiety-like behavior. Surprisingly, we found no effect of cofilin overactivation on AMPA receptor expression levels. Altogether, while cofilin overactivation might negatively impact the formation of long-lasting memories, it may benefit short-term plasticity.</p
