An improved search for elementary particles with fractional electric charge
The SLAC Quark Search Group has demonstrated successful operation of a low cost, high mass throughput Millikan apparatus designed to search for fractionally charged particles. About six million silicone oil drops were measured with no evidence of fractional charges. A second experiment is under construction with 100 times greater throughput which will utilize optimized search fluids
Comparison of the Electronic Structures of Two Non-cuprate Layered Transition Metal Oxide Superconductors
Comparison is made of the electronic structure of the little-studied layered
transition metal oxide LiNbO with that of NaCoO, which has
attracted tremendous interest since superconductivity was discovered in its
hydrate. Although the active transition metal states are quite different
due to different crystal fields and band filling, both systems show a strong
change of electronic structure with changes in the distance between the
transition metal ion layer and the oxygen layers. The niobate is unusual in
having a large second-neighbor hopping amplitude, and a nearest neighbor
hopping amplitude that is sensitive to the Nb-O separation. LiNbO also
presents the attractive simplicity of a single band triangular lattice system

2D vs. 3D pain visualization: User preferences in a spinal cord injury cohort

The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2011 Springer VerlagResearch on pain experienced after Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) has revealed that not only are there several types of pain present in the same individual with this kind of trauma, but also that people who suffer such an injury can describe the characteristics of the same type of pain in different ways. Making it possible, therefore, to more precisely describe pain experience could prove to be vital for an increased quality of life. Accordingly, fifteen individuals with pain after SCI were asked to describe their pain experience using a 3 Dimensional (3D) model of the human body that could be used as an aid in communicating their pain. The results of this study suggest that the consensus of the participants approved the ability of the 3D model to more accurately describe their pain, an encouraging outcome towards the use of 3D technology in support of post SCI pain rehabilitation
Asymptotic results on the spectral radius and the diameter of graphs
AbstractWe study graphs with spectral radius at most 322 and refine results by Woo and Neumaier [R. Woo, A. Neumaier, On graphs whose spectral radius is bounded by 322, Graphs Combinatorics 23 (2007) 713–726]. We study the limit points of the spectral radii of certain families of graphs, and apply the results to the problem of minimizing the spectral radius among the graphs with a given number of vertices and diameter. In particular, we consider the cases when the diameter is about half the number of vertices, and when the diameter is near the number of vertices. We prove certain instances of a conjecture posed by Van Dam and Kooij [E. R. Van Dam, R. E. Kooij, The minimal spectral radius of graphs with a given diameter, Linear Algebra Appl. 423 (2007) 408–419] and show that the conjecture is false for the other instances
Depression Vulnerability Predicts Cigarette Smoking among College Students: Gender and Negative Reinforcement Expectancies as Contributing Factors
This study examined the association between vulnerability to depression and smoking behavior in college students in 1214 college students (54% female), and evaluated gender and expectancies of negative affect reduction as moderators or mediators of this relationship. Depression vulnerability predicted smoking in females, but not males. The relationship between depression vulnerability and smoking status was mediated by expectancies of negative affect reduction in females only. Female college students who are vulnerable to depression may smoke because they expect smoking to relieve negative affect. Smoking interventions for college females may increase in effectiveness by targeting depression and emphasizing mood regulation
