    Abortable fork-linearizable storage

    We address the problem of emulating a shared read/write memory in a message passing system using a storage server prone to Byzantine failures. Although cryptography can be used to ensure confidentiality and integrity of the data, nothing can prevent a malicious server from returning obsolete data. Fork-linearizability [1] guarantees that if a malicious server hides an update of some client from another client, then these two clients will never see each others' updates again. Fork-linearizability is arguably the strongest consistency property attainable in the presence of a malicious server. Recent work [2] has shown that there is no fork-linearizable shared memory emulation that supports wait-free operations. On the positive side, it has been shown that lock-based emulations exist [1,2]. Lock-based protocols are fragile because they are blocking if clients may crash. In this paper we present for the first time lock-free emulations of fork-linearizable shared memory. We have developed two protocols, Linear and Concur. With a correct server, both protocols guarantee linearizability and that every operation successfully completes in the absence of step contention, while interfering operations terminate by aborting. The Concur algorithm additionally ensures that concurrent operations invoked on different registers complete successfully. © 2009 Springer-Verlag

    New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias

    Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/‘proxy’ AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele. © 2022, The Author(s)

    This report presents the capabilities of the CMS experiment to explore the rich heavy-ion physics programme offered by the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The collisions of lead nuclei at energies ,will probe quark and gluon matter at unprecedented values of energy density. The prime goal of this research is to study the fundamental theory of the strong interaction - Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) - in extreme conditions of temperature, density and parton momentum fraction (low-x). This report covers in detail the potential of CMS to carry out a series of representative Pb-Pb measurements. These include "bulk" observables, (charged hadron multiplicity, low pT inclusive hadron identified spectra and elliptic flow) which provide information on the collective properties of the system, as well as perturbative probes such as quarkonia, heavy-quarks, jets and high pT hadrons which yield "tomographic" information of the hottest and densest phases of the reaction.0info:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
