    A new record of Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) on the North Island, New Zealand

    The filamentous green alga Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) was recorded for the first time on the North Island of New Zealand at mokoroa Estuary, Tauranga Harbour. This species is previously known within New Zealand from only two records, both from the South Island. In Tauranga Harbour, this species was restricted to anoxic estuarine sediments where mangrove forests had been mulched, and mulchate left in situ. Percursaria percursa was found intertwined with Ulva spp. and Rhizoclonium spp. Surveys of other North and South Island estuaries suggest that this alga, although occurring as part of nuisance green algal blooms in Tauranga Harbour, has only colonized human-impacted locations, and has not yet been observed in natural' estuarine ecosystems in New Zealand. As this species was found intertwined with other mat-forming filamentous green algae, it can easily be misidentified in the field, leading to both over- and under-reporting of species occurrence

Cryptic diversity is common in the red algae and is often discovered when comparing specimens from distant locations or different morphotypes of species with high phenotypic plasticity. The genus Lophurella includes seven species from the cold-temperate coasts of the southern hemisphere. L. periclados is the only species reported from Australia where two morphotypes were identified in relation to levels of wave exposure. In New Zealand, three species of Lophurella have been reported–the endemic L. caespitosa (type locality Parimahu, North Island of New Zealand), L. hookeriana (type locality Cape Horn, South America) and L. periclados. We reassessed species diversity of Lophurella in Australia and New Zealand with the aim of determining (1) whether New Zealand and South American specimens of L. hookeriana actually represent a single species, and (2) if the morphotypes of L. periclados mask cryptic diversity. We studied rbcL sequences and morphological features of 36 specimens identified as L. periclados, one specimen of L. caespitosa, and five samples of L. hookeriana, three from New Zealand and two from Cape Horn. Molecular analyses revealed that L. hookeriana from New Zealand and South America are distinct species and the new species L. pauciramulosa is described from New Zealand. L. periclados is a complex involving four species and we propose three new species, L. mutabilis, L. nigra and L. tasmanica. Cryptic diversity in L. periclados did not align with the previously defined ecotypes and several species were often found at the same site. L. periclados, L. nigra and L. tasmanica can be distinguished by morphological characters. Conversely, L. mutabilis has high morphological plasticity, with characters that overlap with L. periclados and L. nigra, and can only be distinguished by DNA sequences

    We show that the particle motion in Bohmian mechanics, given by the solution of an ordinary differential equation, exists globally: For a large class of potentials the singularities of the velocity field and infinity will not be reached in finite time for typical initial values. A substantial part of the analysis is based on the probabilistic significance of the quantum flux.     Observation of Parity Violation in the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus Decay

    The alpha decay parameter in the process Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus has been measured from a sample of 4.50 million unpolarized Omega-minus decays recorded by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab and found to be [1.78 +/- 0.19(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)]{\times}10^{-2}. This is the first unambiguous evidence for a nonzero alpha decay parameter, and hence parity violation, in the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus decay.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    Mass equidistribution of Hilbert modular eigenforms

    Let F be a totally real number field, and let f traverse a sequence of non-dihedral holomorphic eigencuspforms on GL(2)/F of weight (k_1,...,k_n), trivial central character and full level. We show that the mass of f equidistributes on the Hilbert modular variety as max(k_1,...,k_n) tends to infinity. Our result answers affirmatively a natural analogue of a conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). Our proof generalizes the argument of Holowinsky-Soundararajan (2008) who established the case F = Q. The essential difficulty in doing so is to adapt Holowinsky's bounds for the Weyl periods of the equidistribution problem in terms of manageable shifted convolution sums of Fourier coefficients to the case of a number field with nontrivial unit group.Comment: 40 pages; typos corrected, nearly accepted for

    HyperCP: A high-rate spectrometer for the study of charged hyperon and kaon decays

    The HyperCP experiment (Fermilab E871) was designed to search for rare phenomena in the decays of charged strange particles, in particular CP violation in Ξ\Xi and Λ\Lambda hyperon decays with a sensitivity of 10−410^{-4}. Intense charged secondary beams were produced by 800 GeV/c protons and momentum-selected by a magnetic channel. Decay products were detected in a large-acceptance, high-rate magnetic spectrometer using multiwire proportional chambers, trigger hodoscopes, a hadronic calorimeter, and a muon-detection system. Nearly identical acceptances and efficiencies for hyperons and antihyperons decaying within an evacuated volume were achieved by reversing the polarities of the channel and spectrometer magnets. A high-rate data-acquisition system enabled 231 billion events to be recorded in twelve months of data-taking.Comment: 107 pages, 45 Postscript figures, 14 tables, Elsevier LaTeX, submitted to Nucl.     Search for the Rare Decay KL --> pi0 ee

    The KTeV/E799 experiment at Fermilab has searched for the rare kaon decay KL--> pi0ee. This mode is expected to have a significant CP violating component. The measurement of its branching ratio could support the Standard Model or could indicate the existence of new physics. This letter reports new results from the 1999-2000 data set. One event is observed with an expected background at 0.99 +/- 0.35 events. We set a limit on the branching ratio of 3.5 x 10^(-10) at the 90% confidence level. Combining the results with the dataset taken in 1997 yields the final KTeV result: BR(KL --> pi0 ee) < 2.8 x 10^(-10) at 90% CL.Comment: 4 pages, three figure
