PosterVote:expanding the action repertoire for local political activism
Online and digital technologies support and extend the action repertoires of localized social movements. In this paper we examine the ways by which digital technologies can support ‘on-the-ground ’ activist communities in the development of social movements. After identifying some of the challenges of deploying conventional voting and consultation technologies for activism, we examine situated political action in local communities through the design and deployment of a low-cost community voting prototype, PosterVote. We deploy PosterVote in two case studies with two local community organizations identifying the features that supported or hindered grassroots democratic practices. Through interviews with these communities, we explore the design of situated voting systems to support grassroots democratic practices and participation within an ecology of social action. Alendroninezuur effectiever dan alfacalcidol voor preventie van osteoporose bij patiënten met een reumatische ziekte die starten met glucocorticoïdtherapie
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of alendronate and alfacalcidol in the prevention ofglucocorticoid-related osteoporosis in patients with a rheumatic disease. DESIGN: Randomised, double-blind, double-placebo clinical trial (www. clinicaltrials.gov; number: NCT00138983). METHODS: A total of 201 patients with rheumatic disease who were starting glucocorticoid treatment at a daily dose that was equivalent to at least 7.5 mg of prednisone were randomised to alendronate (10 mg) and a placebo capsule ofalfacalcidol daily (n = 100) or alfacalcidol (1 microg) and a placebo tablet ofalendronate daily (n = 101) for 18 months. Primary outcome was change in lumbar spine bone mineral density at 18 months. The main secondary outcome was the incidence of morphometrically confirmed vertebral deformities. RESULTS: Overall, 163 patients completed the study. The bone mineral density of the lumbar spine increased by 2.1% (95% CI: 1.1-3.1) in the alendronate group and decreased by 1.9% (95% CI: -3.I--0.7) in the alfacalcidol group. At 18 months the mean difference in change in bone mineral density between the two groups was 4.0% (95% CI: 2.4-5-5). Three patients in the alendronate group had a new vertebral deformity, compared with 8 patients in the alfacalcidol group, including 5 symptomatic vertebral fractures in 3 patients; the hazard ratio was 0.4 (95% CI: 0.1-1.4). CONCLUSION: Alendronate was more effective than alfacalcidol in preventing glucocorticoid-induced bone loss during this 18-month trial in patients with rheumatic diseases who were starting glucocorticoid treatment
The role of charge in the toxicity of polymer-coated cerium oxide nanomaterials to Caenorhabditis elegans
This study examined the impact of surface functionalization and charge on ceria nanomaterial toxicity to Caenorhabditis elegans. The examined endpoints included mortality, reproduction, protein expression, and protein oxidation profiles. Caenorhabditis elegans were exposed to identical 2–5 nm ceria nanomaterial cores which were coated with cationic (diethylaminoethyl dextran; DEAE), anionic (carboxymethyl dextran; CM), and non-ionic (dextran; DEX) polymers. Mortality and reproductive toxicity of DEAE-CeO2 was approximately two orders of magnitude higher than for CM-CeO2 or DEX-CeO2. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis with orbitrap mass spectrometry identification revealed changes in the expression profiles of several mitochondrial-related proteins and proteins that are expressed in the C. elegans intestine. However, each type of CeO2 material exhibited a distinct protein expression profile. Increases in protein carbonyls and protein-bound 3-nitrotyrosine were also observed for some proteins, indicating oxidative and nitrosative damage. Taken together the results indicate that the magnitude of toxicity and toxicity pathways vary greatly due to surface functionalization of CeO2 nanomaterials
Is Gly16Arg β<sub>2</sub> Receptor Polymorphism Related to Impulse Oscillometry in a Real-Life Asthma Clinic Setting?
PURPOSE: We evaluated whether Gly16Arg beta2-receptor genotype relates to impulse oscillometry (IOS) in a real-life clinic setting. METHODS: Patients with persistent asthma taking inhaled corticosteroid ± long-acting beta-agonist (ICS ± LABA) were evaluated. We compared genotype groups comprising either no Arg copies (i.e. GlyGly) versus one or two Arg copies (i.e. ArgArg or ArgGly). IOS outcomes included total airway resistance at 5 Hz (R5), central airway resistance at 20 Hz (R20), peripheral airway resistance (R5–R20), reactance at 5 Hz, area under reactance curve (AX) and resonant frequency (RF). In addition, we recorded ACQ-5 and salbutamol use. RESULTS: One hundred and twelve ICS-treated asthmatic patients (mean ICS dose 1238 µg/day), mean age 43 years, ACQ 2.34, FEV1 82 %, R5 177 % were identified—89 were also taking LABA. 61 patients were GlyGly, while 14 were ArgArg and 37 were ArgGly. There were no significant differences in IOS outcomes, ACQ or salbutamol use between the genotypes. The allelic risk (as odds ratio) for less well-controlled asthma (as ACQ > 1.5) was 1.1 (95 % CI 0.72–1.68) in relation to each Arg copy with a corresponding odds ratio for abnormal R5–R20 > 0.07kPA/l.s being 0.91 (95 % CI 0.57–1.44). 71 % of patients had an ACQ > 1.5 in the GlyGly group, versus 67 % in GlyArg/ArgArg group, with corresponding figures for abnormal R5–R20 > 0.07 kPa/l.s being 69 versus 73 %. CONCLUSION: In a real-life clinic setting for patients with poorly controlled persistent asthma taking ICS ± LABA, we found no evidence of any relationship of Gly16Arg to IOS, ACQ or salbutamol use
Associations of airway inflammation and responsiveness markers in non asthmatic subjects at start of apprenticeship
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bronchial Hyperresponsiveness (BHR) is considered a hallmark of asthma. Other methods are helpful in epidemiological respiratory health studies including Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FENO) and Eosinophils Percentage (EP) in nasal lavage fluid measuring markers for airway inflammation along with the Forced Oscillatory Technique measuring Airway resistance (AR). Can their outcomes discriminate profiles of respiratory health in healthy subjects starting apprenticeship in occupations with a risk of asthma?</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma-like symptoms, FEV1 and AR post-Methacholine Bronchial Challenge (MBC) test results, FENO measurements and EP were all investigated in apprentice bakers, pastry-makers and hairdressers not suffering from asthma. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was simultaneously conducted in relation to these groups and this generated a synthetic partition (EI). Associations between groups of subjects based on BHR and EI respectively, as well as risk factors, symptoms and investigations were also assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the 441 apprentice subjects, 45 (10%) declared rhinoconjunctivitis-like symptoms, 18 (4%) declared asthma-like symptoms and 26 (6%) suffered from BHR. The mean increase in AR post-MBC test was 21% (sd = 20.8%). The median of FENO values was 12.6 ppb (2.6-132 range). Twenty-six subjects (6.7%) had EP exceeding 14%. BHR was associated with atopy (p < 0.01) and highest FENO values (p = 0.09). EI identified 39 subjects with eosinophilic inflammation (highest values of FENO and eosinophils), which was associated with BHR and atopy.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Are any of the identified markers predictive of increased inflammatory responsiveness or of development of symptoms caused by occupational exposures? Analysis of population follow-up will attempt to answer this question.</p
Optical coherence tomography-based contact indentation for diaphragm mechanics in a mouse model of transforming growth factor alpha induced lung disease
This study tested the utility of optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based indentation to assess mechanical properties of respiratory tissues in disease. Using OCT-based indentation, the elastic modulus of mouse diaphragm was measured from changes in diaphragm thickness in response to an applied force provided by an indenter. We used a transgenic mouse model of chronic lung disease induced by the overexpression of transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-a), established by the presence of pleural and peribronchial fibrosis and impaired lung mechanics determined by the forced oscillation technique and plethysmography. Diaphragm elastic modulus assessed by OCT-based indentation was reduced by TGF-a at both left and right lateral locations (p < 0.05). Diaphragm elastic modulus at left and right lateral locations were correlated within mice (r = 0.67, p < 0.01) suggesting that measurements were representative of tissue beyond the indenter field. Co-localised images of diaphragm after TGF-a overexpression revealed a layered fibrotic appearance. Maximum diaphragm force in conventional organ bath studies was also reduced by TGF-a overexpression (p < 0.01). Results show that OCT-based indentation provided clear delineation of diseased diaphragm, and together with organ bath assessment, provides new evidence suggesting that TGF-a overexpression produces impairment in diaphragm function and, therefore, an increase in the work of breathing in chronic lung disease
User experiences with simulated cyber‑physical attacks on smart home IoT
With the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming increasingly prevalent in people’s homes, new threats to residents are emerging such as the cyber-physical attack, i.e. a cyber-attack with physical consequences. In this study, we aimed to gain insights into how people experience and respond to cyber-physical attacks to their IoT devices. We conducted a naturalistic field experiment and provided 9 Dutch and 7 UK households, totalling 18 and 13 participants respectively, with a number of smart devices for use in their home. After a period of adaptation, simulated attacks were conducted, leading to events of varying noticeability (e.g., the light going on or off once or several times). After informing people simulated attacks had occurred, the attacks were repeated one more time. User experiences were collected through interviews and analysed with thematic analyses. Four relevant themes were identified, namely (1) the awareness of and concern about privacy and security risks was rather low, (2) the simulated attacks made little impression on the participants, (3) the participants had difficulties with correctly recognizing simulated attacks, and (4) when informed about simulated attacks taking place; participants noticed more simulated attacks and presented decision rules for them (but still were not able to identify and distinguish them well—see Theme 3). The findings emphasise the need for training interventions and an intrusion detection system to increase detection of cyber-physical attacks.European Union funding: G0H6416N-FWOOPR201600970;
