    Closed loop spray cooling apparatus

    A closed loop apparatus for spraying coolant against the back of a radiation target is described. The coolant was circulated through a closed loop with a bubble of inert gas being maintained around the spray. Mesh material was disposed between the bubble and the surface of the liquid coolant which was below the bubble at a predetermined level. In a second embodiment, no inert gas was used, the bubble consisting of a vapor produced when the coolant was sprayed against the target

    Quantum measurement backaction from a BEC coupled to a mechanical oscillator

    We study theoretically the dynamics of a a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of a macroscopic mechanical membrane magnetically coupled to a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate via a nanomagnet attached at the membrane center. We demonstrate that this coupling permits us to monitor indirectly the center-of-mass position of the membrane via measurements of the spin of the condensed atoms. These measurements normally induce a significant backaction on the membrane motion, which we quantify for the cases of thermal and coherent initial states of the membrane. We discuss the possibility of measuring that quantum backaction via repeated measurements. We also investigate the potential to generate non-classical states of the membrane, in particular Schrodinger cat states, via such repeated measurements.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to PR

    Dissipation in nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators

    We have measured the dissipation and frequency of nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators with resonant frequencies between 13.7 MHz and 157.3 MHz, over a temperature range of 1.4–274 K. Using both magnetomotive network analysis and a time-domain ring-down technique, we have found the dissipation in this material to have a temperature dependence roughly following T^(0.2), with Q^(–1) ≈ 10^(–4) at low temperatures. The frequency dependence of a large dissipation feature at ~35–55 K is consistent with thermal activation over a 0.02 eV barrier with an attempt frequency of 10 GHz

    A consecutive series of patients undergoing cardiac surgery for valve replacement was divided into two groups. The first underwent postoperative artificial ventilation using the oxygen-driven Bird ventilator. The inspiratory oxygen concentration was 83%. In the second group a Bird ventilator was also used but with an oxygen concentration of 40%. In the first group the intrapulmonary right-to-left shunt rose to an average of 17% during the first two postoperative daysand in the second group to an average of 9%. The study supports the view that the inspiratory oxygen concentration should only be kept high enough to achieve a normal oxygen saturation of arterial bloo

    The Proteus Navier-Stokes code

    An effort is currently underway at NASA Lewis to develop two- and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes codes, called Proteus, for aerospace propulsion applications. The emphasis in the development of Proteus is not algorithm development or research on numerical methods, but rather the development of the code itself. The objective is to develop codes that are user-oriented, easily-modified, and well-documented. Well-proven, state-of-the-art solution algorithms are being used. Code readability, documentation (both internal and external), and validation are being emphasized. This paper is a status report on the Proteus development effort. The analysis and solution procedure are described briefly, and the various features in the code are summarized. The results from some of the validation cases that have been run are presented for both the two- and three-dimensional codes

    Detection rate of actionable mutations in diverse cancers using a biopsy-free (blood) circulating tumor cell DNA assay.

    Analysis of cell-free DNA using next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a powerful tool for the detection/monitoring of alterations present in circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). Plasma extracted from 171 patients with a variety of cancers was analyzed for ctDNA (54 genes and copy number variants (CNVs) in three genes (EGFR, ERBB2 and MET)). The most represented cancers were lung (23%), breast (23%), and glioblastoma (19%). Ninety-nine patients (58%) had at least one detectable alteration. The most frequent alterations were TP53 (29.8%), followed by EGFR (17.5%), MET (10.5%), PIK3CA (7%), and NOTCH1 (5.8%). In contrast, of 222 healthy volunteers, only one had an aberration (TP53). Ninety patients with non-brain tumors had a discernible aberration (65% of 138 patients; in 70% of non-brain tumor patients with an alteration, the anomaly was potentially actionable). Interestingly, nine of 33 patients (27%) with glioblastoma had an alteration (6/33 (18%) potentially actionable). Overall, sixty-nine patients had potentially actionable alterations (40% of total; 69.7% of patients (69/99) with alterations); 68 patients (40% of total; 69% of patients with alterations), by a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug. In summary, 65% of diverse cancers (as well as 27% of glioblastomas) had detectable ctDNA aberration(s), with the majority theoretically actionable by an approved agent

    High sensitivity cantilevers for measuring persistent currents in normal metal rings

    We propose a new approach to measuring persistent currents in normal metal rings. By integrating micron-scale metal rings into sensitive micromechanical cantilevers and using the cantilevers as torque magnetometers, it should be possible to measure the rings' persistent currents with greater sensitivity than the SQUID-based and microwave resonator-based detectors used in the past. In addition, cantilever-based detectors may allow for measurements in a cleaner electromagnetic environment. We have fabricated ultra sensitive cantilevers with integrated rings and measured their mechanical properties. We present an estimate of the persistent current sensitivity of these cantilever-based detectors, focusing on the limits set by the cantilever's Brownian motion and the shot noise in the laser interferometer that monitors the cantilever

    Isotope dilution assay was used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of L-kynurenine and indole-3-acetic acid in grape must. After solid phase extraction, highest selectivity and sensitivity was achieved by high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS-MS) using selected reaction monitoring (SRM). In the 24 samples under study, the amounts of L-kynurenine and indole-3-acetic acid ranged from 0 to 94 mu g.l-1 and from 20 to 380 mu g.l-1, respectively. These compounds are considered as potential precursors of 2-aminoacetophenone, causing the ''untypical aging off-flavour'' in Vitis vinifera white wines

    Kaon and Antikaon Production in Heavy Ion Collisions at 1.5 AGeV

    At the Kaon Spectrometer KaoS at SIS, GSI the production of kaons and antikaons in heavy ion reactions at a beam energy of 1.5 AGeV has been measured for the collision systems Ni+Ni and Au+Au. The K-/K+ ratio is found to be constant for both systems and as a function of impact parameter but the slopes of K+ and K- spectra differ for all impact parameters.
