Alternative Cropping Systems for Traditional Monoculture Wheat Acres in the Southern Plains for Two Farm Sizes

Kinetic modelling of runaway electron avalanches in tokamak plasmas
Runaway electrons (REs) can be generated in tokamak plasmas if the
accelerating force from the toroidal electric field exceeds the collisional
drag force due to Coulomb collisions with the background plasma. In ITER,
disruptions are expected to generate REs mainly through knock-on collisions,
where enough momentum can be transferred from existing runaways to slow
electrons to transport the latter beyond a critical momentum, setting off an
avalanche of REs. Since knock-on runaways are usually scattered off with a
significant perpendicular component of the momentum with respect to the local
magnetic field direction, these particles are highly magnetized. Consequently,
the momentum dynamics require a full 3-D kinetic description, since these
electrons are highly sensitive to the magnetic non-uniformity of a toroidal
configuration. A bounce-averaged knock-on source term is derived. The
generation of REs from the combined effect of Dreicer mechanism and knock-on
collision process is studied with the code LUKE, a solver of the 3-D linearized
bounce-averaged relativistic electron Fokker-Planck equation, through the
calculation of the response of the electron distribution function to a constant
parallel electric field. This work shows that the avalanche effect can be
important even in non-disruptive scenarios. RE formation through knock-on
collisions is found to be strongly reduced when taking place off the magnetic
axis, since trapped electrons cannot contribute to the RE population. The
relative importance of the avalanche mechanism is investigated as a function of
the key parameters for RE formation; the plasma temperature and the electric
field strength. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the simulations show
that in low temperature and E-field knock-on collisions are the dominant source
of REs and can play a significant role for RE generation, including in
non-disruptive scenarios.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figure
Homalg: A meta-package for homological algebra
The central notion of this work is that of a functor between categories of
finitely presented modules over so-called computable rings, i.e. rings R where
one can algorithmically solve inhomogeneous linear equations with coefficients
in R. The paper describes a way allowing one to realize such functors, e.g.
Hom, tensor product, Ext, Tor, as a mathematical object in a computer algebra
system. Once this is achieved, one can compose and derive functors and even
iterate this process without the need of any specific knowledge of these
functors. These ideas are realized in the ring independent package homalg. It
is designed to extend any computer algebra software implementing the
arithmetics of a computable ring R, as soon as the latter contains algorithms
to solve inhomogeneous linear equations with coefficients in R. Beside
explaining how this suffices, the paper describes the nature of the extensions

It has recently been shown that the fat-derived hormone adiponectin has the ability to decrease hyperglycemia and to reverse insulin resistance. However, bacterially produced full-length adiponectin is functionally inactive. Here, we show that endogenous adiponectin secreted by adipocytes is post-translationally modified into eight different isoforms, as shown by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Carbohydrate detection revealed that six of the adiponectin isoforms are glycosylated. The glycosylation sites were mapped to several lysines (residues 68, 71, 80, and 104) located in the collagenous domain of adiponectin, each having the surrounding motif of GXKGE(D). These four lysines were found to be hydroxylated and subsequently glycosylated. The glycosides attached to each of these four hydroxylated lysines are possibly glucosylgalactosyl groups. Functional analysis revealed that full-length adiponectin produced by mammalian cells is much more potent than bacterially generated adiponectin in enhancing the ability of subphysiological concentrations of insulin to inhibit gluconeogenesis in primary rat hepatocytes, whereas this insulin-sensitizing ability was significantly attenuated when the four glycosylated lysines were substituted with arginines. These results indicate that full-length adiponectin produced by mammalian cells is functionally active as an insulin sensitizer and that hydroxylation and glycosylation of the four lysines in the collagenous domain might contribute to this activity.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Divergence at low bias and down-mixing of the current noise in a diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction
We present current noise measurements in a long diffusive
superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor junction in the low voltage regime,
in which transport can be partially described in terms of coherent multiple
Andreev reflections. We show that, when decreasing voltage, the current noise
exhibits a strong divergence together with a broad peak. We ascribe this peak
to the mixing between the ac- Josephson current and the noise of the junction
itself. We show that the junction noise corresponds to the thermal noise of a
nonlinear resistor 4kBT=R with R V = I V and no adjustable parameters
Theoretical Aspects of Decays and Experimental Comparisons
Predictions for decay rates and distributions for decays into final
states with kaons are discussed and compared with recent measurements. Special
emphasis is put on new constraints for the vector current contribution in the
decay modes. For the modes, disagreements with the
