Formation of convective cells in the scrape-off layer of the CASTOR tokamak
Understanding of the scrape-off layer (SOL) physics in tokamaks requires
diagnostics with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution. This contribution
describes results of experiments performed in the SOL of the CASTOR tokamak
(R=40 cm, a = 6 cm) by means of a ring of 124 Langmuir probes surrounding the
whole poloidal cross section. The individual probes measure either the ion
saturation current of the floating potential with the spatial resolution up to
3 mm. Experiments are performed in a particular magnetic configuration,
characterized by a long parallel connection length in the SOL, L_par ~q2piR. We
report on measurements in discharges, where the edge electric field is modified
by inserting a biased electrode into the edge plasma. In particular, a complex
picture is observed, if the biased electrode is located inside the SOL. The
poloidal distribution of the floating potential appears to be strongly
non-uniform at biasing. The peaks of potential are observed at particular
poloidal angles. This is interpreted as formation of a biased flux tube, which
emanates from the electrode along the magnetic field lines and snakes q times
around the torus. The resulting electric field in the SOL is 2-dimensional,
having the radial as well as the poloidal component. It is demonstrated that
the poloidal electric field E_pol convects the edge plasma radially due to the
E_pol x B_T drift either inward or outward depending on its sign. The
convective particle flux is by two orders of magnitude larger than the

Ion cyclotron wall conditioning experiments on Tore Supra in presence of the toroidal magnetic field
Wall conditioning techniques applicable in the presence of the high toroidal magnetic field will be required for the operation of ITER for tritium removal, isotopic ratio control and recovery to normal operation after disruptions. Recently ion cyclotron wall conditioning (ICWC) experiments have been carried out on Tore Supra in order to assess the efficiency of this technique in ITER relevant conditions. The ICRF discharges were operated in He/H-2 Mixtures at the Tore Supra nominal field (3.8 T) and a RF frequency of 48 MHz, i.e. within the ITER operational space. RF pulses of 60 s (max.) were applied using a standard Tore Supra two-strap resonant double loop antenna in ICWC mode, operated either in pi or 0-phasing with a noticeable improvement of the RF coupling in the latter case. In order to assess the efficiency of the technique for the control of isotopic ratio the wall was first preloaded using a D-2 glow discharge. After 15 minutes of ICWC in He/H-2 gas mixtures the isotopic ratio was altered from 4% to 50% at the price of an important H implantation into the walls. Canine candidate genes for dilated cardiomyopathy: annotation of and polymorphic markers for 14 genes
BackgroundDilated cardiomyopathy is a myocardial disease occurring in humans and domestic animals and is characterized by dilatation of the left ventricle, reduced systolic function and increased sphericity of the left ventricle. Dilated cardiomyopathy has been observed in several, mostly large and giant, dog breeds, such as the Dobermann and the Great Dane. A number of genes have been identified, which are associated with dilated cardiomyopathy in the human, mouse and hamster. These genes mainly encode structural proteins of the cardiac myocyte.ResultsWe present the annotation of, and marker development for, 14 of these genes of the dog genome, i.e. alpha-cardiac actin, caveolin 1, cysteine-rich protein 3, desmin, lamin A/C, LIM-domain binding factor 3, myosin heavy polypeptide 7, phospholamban, sarcoglycan delta, titin cap, alpha-tropomyosin, troponin I, troponin T and vinculin. A total of 33 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms were identified for these canine genes and 11 polymorphic microsatellite repeats were developed.ConclusionThe presented polymorphisms provide a tool to investigate the role of the corresponding genes in canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy by linkage analysis or association studies
