Ice polyamorphism in the minimal Mercedes-Benz model of water
We investigate ice polyamorphism in the context of the two-dimensional Mercedes-Benz model of water. We find a first-order phase transition between a crystalline phase and a high-density amorphous phase. Furthermore, we find a reversible transformation between two amorphous structures of high and low density; however, we find this to be a continuous and not an abrupt transition, as the low-density amorphous phase does not show structural stability. Exploiting the neutronization burst of a galactic supernova
One of the robust features found in simulations of core-collapse supernovae
(SNe) is the prompt neutronization burst, i.e. the first milliseconds
after bounce when the SN emits with very high luminosity mainly
neutrinos. We examine the dependence of this burst on variations in the input
of current SN models and find that recent improvements of the electron capture
rates as well as uncertainties in the nuclear equation of state or a variation
of the progenitor mass have only little effect on the signature of the
neutronization peak in a megaton water Cherenkov detector for different
neutrino mixing schemes. We show that exploiting the time-structure of the
neutronization peak allows one to identify the case of a normal mass hierarchy
and large 13-mixing angle , where the peak is absent. The
robustness of the predicted total event number in the neutronization burst
makes a measurement of the distance to the SN feasible with a precision of

The genomic distribution of intraspecific and interspecific sequence divergence of human segmental duplications relative to human/chimpanzee chromosomal rearrangements
Background: It has been suggested that chromosomal rearrangements harbor the molecular footprint of the biological phenomena which they induce, in the form, for instance, of changes in the sequence divergence rates of linked genes. So far, all the studies of these potential associations have focused on the relationship between structural changes and the rates of evolution of singlecopy
DNA and have tried to exclude segmental duplications (SDs). This is paradoxical, since SDs are one of the primary forces driving the evolution of structure and function in our genomes and have been linked not only with novel genes acquiring new functions, but also with overall higher
DNA sequence divergence and major chromosomal rearrangements.
Results: Here we take the opposite view and focus on SDs. We analyze several of the features of SDs, including the rates of intraspecific divergence between paralogous copies of human SDs and
of interspecific divergence between human SDs and chimpanzee DNA. We study how divergence measures relate to chromosomal rearrangements, while considering other factors that affect
evolutionary rates in single copy DNA.
Conclusion: We find that interspecific SD divergence behaves similarly to divergence of singlecopy DNA. In contrast, old and recent paralogous copies of SDs do present different patterns of
intraspecific divergence. High energy neutrino yields from astrophysical sources II: Magnetized sources
We calculate the yield of high energy neutrinos produced in astrophysical
sources for arbitrary interaction depths and magnetic field strengths
. We take into account energy loss processes like synchrotron radiation and
diffusion of charged particles in turbulent magnetic fields as well as the
scattering of secondaries on background photons and the direct production of
charm neutrinos. Meson-photon interactions are simulated with an extended
version of the SOPHIA model. Diffusion leads to an increased path-length before
protons leave the source of size R_s and therefore magnetized sources lose
their transparency below the energy , with and 1 for Kolmogorov and
Bohm diffusion, respectively. Moreover, the neutrino flux is suppressed above
the energy where synchrotron energy losses become important for charged
particles. As a consequence, the energy spectrum and the flavor composition of
neutrinos are strongly modified both at low and high energies even for sources
with \tau_0\lsim 1.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figure
High-Throughput Task to Study Memory Recall During Spatial Navigation in Rodents
© Copyright © 2020 Morales, Tomàs, Dalmau, de la Rocha and Jercog. Spatial navigation is one of the most frequently used behavioral paradigms to study memory formation in rodents. Commonly used tasks to study memory are labor-intensive, preventing the simultaneous testing of multiple animals with the tendency to yield a low number of trials, curtailing the statistical power. Moreover, they are not tailored to be combined with neurophysiology recordings because they are not based on overt stereotyped behavioral responses that can be precisely timed. Here we present a novel task to study long-term memory formation and recall during spatial navigation. The task consists of learning sessions during which mice need to find the rewarding port that changes from day to day. Hours after learning, there is a recall session during which mice search for the location of the memorized rewarding port. During the recall sessions, the animals repeatedly poke the remembered port over many trials (up to ∼20) without receiving a reward (i.e., no positive feedback) as a readout of memory. In this task, mice show memory of port locations learned on up to three previous days. This eight-port maze task requires minimal human intervention, allowing for simultaneous and unsupervised testing of several mice in parallel, yielding a high number of recall trials per session over many days, and compatible with recordings of neural activity
Signatures of supernova neutrino oscillations in the Earth mantle and core
The Earth matter effects on supernova (SN) neutrinos can be identified at a
single detector through peaks in the Fourier transform of their ``inverse
energy'' spectrum. The positions of these peaks are independent of the SN
models and therefore the peaks can be used as a robust signature of the Earth
matter effects, which in turn can distinguish between different neutrino mixing
scenarios. Whereas only one genuine peak is observable when the neutrinos
traverse only the Earth mantle, traversing also the core gives rise to multiple
peaks. We calculate the strengths and positions of these peaks analytically and
explore their features at a large scintillation detector as well as at a
megaton water Cherenkov detector through Monte Carlo simulations. We propose a
simple algorithm to identify the peaks in the actual data and quantify the
chances of a peak identification as a function of the location of the SN in the

Excess hospitalizations and mortality associated with seasonal influenza in Spain, 2008–2018

Influenza may trigger complications, particularly in at-risk groups, potentially leading to hospitalization or death. However, due to lack of routine testing, influenza cases are infrequently coded with influenza-specific diagnosis. Statistical models using influenza activity as an explanatory variable can be used to estimate annual hospitalizations and deaths associated with influenza. Our study aimed to estimate the clinical and economic burden of severe influenza in Spain, considering such models.
Methods
The study comprised ten epidemic seasons (2008/2009–2017/2018) and used two approaches: (i) a direct method of estimating the seasonal influenza hospitalization, based on the number of National Health Service hospitalizations with influenza-specific International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes (ICD-9: 487–488; ICD-10: J09-J11), as primary or secondary diagnosis; (ii) an indirect method of estimating excess hospitalizations and deaths using broader groups of ICD codes in time-series models, computed for six age groups and four groups of diagnoses: pneumonia or influenza (ICD-9: 480–488, 517.1; ICD-10: J09–J18), respiratory (ICD-9: 460–519; ICD-10: J00–J99), respiratory or cardiovascular (C&R, ICD-9: 390–459, 460–519; ICD-10: I00–I99, J00–J99), and all-cause. Means, excluding the H1N1pdm09 pandemic (2009/2010), are reported in this study.
Results
The mean number of hospitalizations with a diagnosis of influenza per season was 13,063, corresponding to 28.1 cases per 100,000 people. The mean direct annual cost of these hospitalizations was €45.7 million, of which 65.7% was generated by patients with comorbidities. Mean annual influenza-associated C&R hospitalizations were estimated at 34,894 (min: 16,546; max: 52,861), corresponding to 75.0 cases per 100,000 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 63.3–86.3) for all ages and 335.3 (95% CI: 293.2–377.5) in patients aged ≥ 65 years. We estimate 3.8 influenza-associated excess C&R hospitalizations for each hospitalization coded with an influenza-specific diagnosis in patients aged ≥ 65 years. The mean direct annual cost of the estimated excess C&R hospitalizations was €142.9 million for all ages and €115.9 million for patients aged ≥ 65 years. Mean annual influenza-associated all-cause mortality per 100,000 people was estimated at 27.7 for all ages.
Conclusions
Results suggest a relevant under-detected burden of influenza mostly in the elderly population, but not neglectable in younger people.The BARI study was funded by Sanofi. a nivel industrial para minimizar los efectos adversos en plantas de producción de hormigón preparado. En la primera parte del artículo, se muestran los resultados de
varias campañas experimentales cuyo propósito ha sido determinar la influencia de las temperaturas ambientales extremas sobre las propiedades térmicas, de trabajabilidad y mecánicas del hormigón, así como de morteros, pastas de cemento y áridos. Las conclusiones apuntan al
