    Evaluation of Mercury Exposure Reduction through a Fish Consumption Advisory Program for Anishinaabe Tribal Members in Northern Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota

    The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission has an extensive program to inform Anishinaabe tribal members from northern Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota who harvest and consume walleye about the health risks of consuming these fish, and to encourage harvest and consumption practices that reduce exposure to MeHg. We report here the results of a probabilistic analysis of exposure to methyl mercury (MeHg) among tribal members who consume walleye. The model predicts that the potential for greatest exposures to MeHg occur among women of child-bearing age and children who consume large walleye from lakes that contain heavily contaminated (MeHg concentration >0.5 mg/kg) fish. The analysis allows GLIFWC to evaluate, focus, and fine-tune its initiatives to protect the health of tribal members in ways that result in exposure and risk reduction for tribal harvesters, women of child-bearing age, and children, while maintaining important tribal lifeways, which include the harvest and consumption of walleye

    Impact of Implementing the Geriatric Resource Nurse Model on Fall and Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer Rates, and Length of Stay in Older Adults in an Acute Care Hospital

    Background.Older adults are at high risk for adverse care outcomes, such as injuries from falls, hospital acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs), and prolonged length of stay (LOS). Available evidence suggests outcomes may improve when older adults are cared for by healthcare providers with competence in geriatrics. To improve outcomes, an acute care not-for-profit teaching hospital in Washington DC area implemented a Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) model that prepares registered nurses (RNs) as clinical experts on core geriatric principles on four general care wards (three medical-surgical and one cardiac). Objectives. Toexamine the effects of GRN model implementation on fall and HAPU rates, and LOS in older adults in medical-surgical and cardiac units in an acute care hospital. Methods.A retrospective chart review was conducted to measure fall and HAPU rates, and LOS before and after implementation of the GRN model. Data from 1176 charts (609 in before and 567 in after intervention group) was reviewed. Data analysis was performed in SPSS 22. Results. Total number of falls was 24 (2.0%) with 13 (2.1%) before and 11 (1.9%) after intervention group. Total number of HAPUs was 26 (2.2%) including 18 (3.0%) before and 8 (1.4%) after intervention group. LOS ranged from 1-71 days. LOS mean for total population was 5.14 (SD=5.10), with a mean of 4.88 (SD=4.71) before and a mean of 5.41 (SD=5.49) after intervention. There were no statistically significant differences in fall (x2=0.06, p=0.81) and HAPU (x2=3.24, p=0.07) rates or LOS (t=-1.78, p=0.07) before and after the intervention. Conclusions. Our findingsdid not identify significant differences in fall and HAPU rates, and LOS before and after the intervention. These findings may be a result of inconsistencies in the institutional application of a systematic approach to geriatric care

    Evidence for the Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti

    The gamma-rays from the decay of the GDR in 46Ti compound nucleus formed in the 18O+28Si reaction at bombarding energy 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using a setup consisting of the combined EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays. A comparison of the extracted GDR lineshape data with the predictions of the thermal shape fluctuation model shows evidence for the Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti. In addition to the previously found broad structure in the GDR lineshape region at 18-27 MeV caused by large deformations, the presence of a low energy component (around 10 MeV), due to the Coriolis splitting in prolate well deformed shape, has been identified for the first time.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, proceedings of the COMEX1 conference, June 2003, Paris; to be published in Nucl.     Evaluation of the possibility of using the water of the Bystrytsya-Nadvirnyans'ka River in Cherniiv (Ukraine) to supply the population with drinking water

    The article presents the results of the research carried out in order to assess the possibility of using surface water of the Bystrytsya-Nadvirnyans'ka River in Cherniiv (western Ukraine), for the public supply of water intended for human consumption. For this purpose an existing database that contains the results of analyses of surface water samples collected in 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014 was used. Each year, from 8 to 13 samples were collected from the Bystrytsya-Nadvirnyans'ka River in Cherniiv. Physicochemical analyses of the samples taken included the determination of pH value, temperature, TDS, alkalinity, hardness, dissolved oxygen, BOD5, COD, suspended solids and ions: Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Fe2+, NH4+, Cu2+, Cl-, SO42-, PO43-, HCO3-, NO2-, NO3-. These chemical analyses were verified by calculation of errors based on the ionic balance. The results of the analyses were referred to the polish applicable requirements for surface water used for public supply of water intended for human consumption and to the regulation regarding the classification of the surface water status and environmental quality standards for priority substances. The results indicate that water of the Bystrytsya-Nadvirnyans'ka River in the area of Cherniiv was out of the class in the years 1999 and 2002 due to exceeding the limit values for category A3 for Cu2+. On the basis of incomplete assessment of the status of the Bystrytsya-Nadvirnyans'ka River water (due to the tests limitation to the physical and chemical components) determined that the water has a bad status because it exceeded the limits for class II for Cl-, SO42-, NO3- and TDS. In the samples collected in 1999 and 2002 it is also observed exceeding the maximum limit concentrations for Cu2+

    The GDR width in the excited 147 Eu compound nucleus at high angular momentum

    Abstract High-energy Îł -rays emitted in the decay of the hot compound nucleus 147 Eu have been measured in coincidence with low-energy Îł -rays. The Îł transitions from the different residual nuclei were detected by a multiplicity filter and by Ge detectors. The employed reaction was 37 Cl + 110 Pd at bombarding energies of 160, 165 and 170 MeV. The measured high-energy Îł -ray spectra were analysed within the framework of the statistical model using the Cascade code. The GDR width in the angular momentum interval between 35 and 50 ℏ was found to increase weakly and to be rather well predicted by the thermal shape fluctuation model. Also the deformation parameter ÎČ as a function of the average angular momentum extracted from the data was found to be in general agreement with the model

    Air-drying temperature changes the content of the phenolic acids and flavonols in white mulberry (Morus alba l.) leaves

    The white mulberry leaves are typically available on the market in dried or encapsulated form. It was assumed in the study that appropriate drying of leaves of the white mulberry is significant for obtaining intermediate products with high content of compounds having anti-oxidative activity. The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of the temperature of mulberry leaves air drying on the content of phenolic acids and flavonols. It has been determined that the content of these compounds in the leaves depended on the drying temperature. Drying at 60 \ub0C favored release of phenolic acids and flavonols from complexes and/or formation of new compounds. Their total content was 22% higher than in leaves dried at 30 \ub0C. Drying at 90 \ub0C reduced the phenolic acid and flavonol content by 24%. The most favorable drying temperature was 60 \ub0C

    Strong Deformation Effects in Hot Rotating 46Ti

    Exotic-deformation effects in 46Ti nucleus were investigated by analysing the high-energy gamma-ray and the alpha-particle energy spectra. One of the experiments was performed using the charged-particle multi-detector array ICARE together with a large volume (4"x4") BGO detector. The study focused on simultaneous measurement of light charged particles and gamma-rays in coincidence with the evaporation residues. The experimental data show a signature of very large deformations of the compound nucleus in the Jacobi transition region at the highest spins. These results are compared to data from previous experiments performed with the HECTOR array coupled to the EUROBALL array, where it was found that the GDR strength function is highly fragmented, strongly indicating a presence of nuclei with very large deformation.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, Proceedings of the Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics, to be published in Acta Phys.     High-spin states in 49 V have been studied through the 28 Si(28 Si, α3p) reaction using the EUROBALL Îł-ray detector array. The 49 V level scheme has been extended up to 13.1 MeV including 21 new states. Both negative and positive parity states have been interpreted in the framework of theShell Model.     Pygmy dipole resonance in Ce 140 via inelastic scattering of O 17

Krzysiek et al. ; 8 pĂĄgs.; 7 figs. ; 2 tabs.The Îł decay from the high-lying states of Ce140 excited via inelastic scattering of O17 at a bombarding energy of 340 MeV was measured using the high-resolution AGATA-demonstrator array in coincidence with scattered ions detected in two segmented ΔE-E silicon detectors. Angular distributions of scattered ions and emitted Îł rays were measured, as well as their differential cross sections. The excitation of 1- states below the neutron separation energy is similar to the one obtained in reactions with the α isoscalar probe. The comparison between the experimental differential cross sections and the corresponding predictions using the distorted-wave Born approximation allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of identified 1- pygmy states.
