The female of the scorpion Diplocentrus lachua Armas, Trujillo & Agreda, 2011 is herein described, on the basis of a single specimen collected at Parque Nacional Laguna Lachuá, Alta Verapaz Department, Guatemala, type locality for this species. An emended diagnosis is provided and the known distribution of all described Guatemalan Diplocentrus species is graphically presented
Supernova 2010ev: A reddened high velocity gradient type Ia supernova
Aims. We present and study the spectroscopic and photometric evolution of the
type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2010ev. Methods. We obtain and analyze multi-band
optical light curves and optical-near-infrared spectroscopy at low and medium
resolution spanning from -7 days to +300 days from the B-band maximum. Results.
A photometric analysis shows that SN 2010ev is a SN Ia of normal brightness
with a light curve shape of and a stretch s =
suffering significant reddening. From photometric and
spectroscopic analysis, we deduce a color excess of
and a reddening law of . Spectroscopically, SN 2010ev
belongs to the broad-line SN Ia group, showing stronger than average Si II
{\lambda}6355 absorption features. We also find that SN 2010ev is a
high-velocity gradient SN, with a value of km s d.
The photometric and spectral comparison with other supernovae shows that SN
2010ev has similar colors and velocities to SN 2002bo and SN 2002dj. The
analysis of the nebular spectra indicates that the [Fe II] {\lambda}7155 and
[Ni II] {\lambda}7378 lines are redshifted, as expected for a high velocity
gradient supernova. All these common intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the
high velocity gradient (HVG) group are different from the low velocity gradient
(LVG) normal SN Ia population and suggest significant variety in SN Ia
explosions.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables. Accepted to A&
The Climate Emergency in the Spanish Media and the «Decalogue of Recommendations for Reporting on Climate Change»
In the last two years, since the publication of the latest IPCC reports (IPCC, 2018 & 2020), greater alarm in the scientific, media and social areas has elevated the climate crisis to an emergency level. The social perception of the risk for people and the communication of this emergency has become a complex social phenomenon being constantly updated. This article sets out the results of the content analysis for communications on climate change (CC) in the main Spanish press, radio and television media and their respective Twitter accounts. A structural sampling has been used to identify the different media and supports to be analyzed. The time segment of the Climate Week NYC 2019 was chosen because key dates for the objectives of the study converge there. The Decalogue of Recommendations for Reporting on Climate Change (ECODES, 2018)”, endorsed by over 80 media sources in Spain in the years 2018 and 2019, brings together a series of variables for climate change communication analysis including outstanding concepts and values. The results confirm that the media discourse on CC is worded in accordance with the different social, scientific, and political agendas which interact with the media agenda. Particularities have been found in terms of how the information has been treated and the representations of CC, depending on the type of media analyzed. The evaluation also permits the identification of common elements that characterize the media discourse and shows how the acceleration of the six social tipping interventions (STI) identified by Otto et al. (2020) requires the strategic cooperation of the media for social transformation
Robust formation of morphogen gradients
We discuss the formation of graded morphogen profiles in a cell layer by
nonlinear transport phenomena, important for patterning developing organisms.
We focus on a process termed transcytosis, where morphogen transport results
from binding of ligands to receptors on the cell surface, incorporation into
the cell and subsequent externalization. Starting from a microscopic model, we
derive effective transport equations. We show that, in contrast to morphogen
transport by extracellular diffusion, transcytosis leads to robust ligand
profiles which are insensitive to the rate of ligand production
Serendipitous discovery of RR Lyrae stars in the Leo V ultra-faint galaxy
During the analysis of RR Lyrae stars discovered in the High cadence
Transient Survey (HiTS) taken with the Dark Energy Camera at the 4-m telescope
at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, we found a group of three very
distant, fundamental mode pulsator RR Lyrae (type ab). The location of these
stars agrees with them belonging to the Leo V ultra-faint satellite galaxy, for
which no variable stars have been reported to date. The heliocentric distance
derived for Leo V based on these stars is 173 +/- 5 kpc. The pulsational
properties (amplitudes and periods) of these stars locate them within the locus
of the Oosterhoff II group, similar to most other ultra-faint galaxies with
known RR Lyrae stars. This serendipitous discovery shows that distant RR Lyrae
stars may be used to search for unknown faint stellar systems in the outskirts
of the Milky Way.Comment: Accepted in ApJ Letter
The Type IIn Supernova SN 2010bt: The Explosion of a Star in Outburst
Indexación: Scopus. It is well known that massive stars (M > 8 M ) evolve up to the collapse of the stellar core, resulting in most cases in a supernova (SN) explosion. Their heterogeneity is related mainly to different configurations of the progenitor star at the moment of the explosion and to their immediate environments. We present photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2010bt, which was classified as a Type IIn SN from a spectrum obtained soon after discovery and was observed extensively for about 2 months. After the seasonal interruption owing to its proximity to the Sun, the SN was below the detection threshold, indicative of a rapid luminosity decline. We can identify the likely progenitor with a very luminous star (log L/L ≈ 7) through comparison of Hubble Space Telescope images of the host galaxy prior to explosion with those of the SN obtained after maximum light. Such a luminosity is not expected for a quiescent star, but rather for a massive star in an active phase. This progenitor candidate was later confirmed via images taken in 2015 (∼5 yr post-discovery), in which no bright point source was detected at the SN position. Given these results and the SN behavior, we conclude that SN 2010bt was likely a Type IIn SN and that its progenitor was a massive star that experienced an outburst shortly before the final explosion, leading to a dense H-rich circumstellar environment around the SN progenitor. © 2018.
