    Constraining the parameters of the putative supermassive binary black hole in PG 1302-102 from its radio structure

    We investigate the pc-scale kinematics and kpc-scale radio morphology of the quasar PG 1302-102, which may harbour a sub-pc separation supermassive binary black hole system at its centre as inferred from optical variability. High-resolution radio interferometric measurements obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) in the Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments (MOJAVE) programme at 15 GHz at 20 epochs spanning 17 years were analysed to investigate the pc-scale radio structure. Archival observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz were obtained to study the kpc-scale morphology. We find that the pc-scale jet is inclined within ~2.2 deg to the line of sight and has a half-opening angle of about 0.2 deg. The parameters derived from the pc-scale radio jet are qualitatively consistent with those obtained from the analysis of the optical light curve of PG 1302-102. We obtain at least 0.08 for the mass ratio of the two black holes in the system. We find some indication for a helical jet structure on kpc-scale, but the directions of the inner and the extended radio jets are significantly different, obstructing a straightforward connection of the pc- and kpc-scale jets within the binary scenario.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRA

    Our paper presents the labor market situation of graduate career starter in Hungary based on empirical data (randomly distributed questionnaires of 202 employees). The objective of the research was to survey how this little segment of employees feels on the Hungarian labor market. According to our hypothesis studying and working represent a great value for the graduate career starters and also they are satisfied with their position obtained on the labor market. Despite the uncertain economic situation the results have justified out hypothesis according to which studying represents an outstanding value for graduate career starters and presumes their satisfaction on the llabor market. The examination, which is only part of complex research, was justified by the labor market situation of graduate career starters whose position cannot be described as ’smooth’

    Computer models predicting outcomes among patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) can be used as disease management program evaluation tools. The clinical data required as inputs for these models include annually updated measurements such as blood pressure and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). These data can be extracted from primary care physician office systems but there are concerns about their completeness. This paper reports on the completeness of general practice records.Background: Computer models predicting outcomes among patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) can be used as disease management program evaluation tools. The clinical data required as inputs for these models can include annually updated measurements such as blood pressure and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). These data can be extracted from primary care physician office systems but there are concerns about their completeness. Objectives/methods: This study addressed the completeness of routinely collected data extracted from 12 primary care practices in Australia. Data on annual availability of blood pressure, weight, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and HbA1c values for regular patients were extracted in 2103 and analysed for temporal trends over the period 2000 to 2012. An ordinal logistic regression model was used to evaluate associations between patient characteristics and completeness of their records. Primary care practitioners were surveyed to identify barriers to recording data and strategies to improve its completeness. Results: Over the study period completeness of data improved substantially from less than 20% for some parameters up to a level of approximately 80% complete, except for the recording of weight. T2D patients with Ischaemic Heart Disease were more likely to have their blood pressure recorded (OR 1.6, p=0.02). Practitioners’ responses suggest they were not experiencing any major barriers to using their electronic medical record system but did agree with some suggested strategies to improve record completeness. Conclusion: The completeness of routinely collected data suitable for input into computerised predictive models is improving although other dimensions of data quality need to be addressed

    Human Fetuin-A Rs4918 Polymorphism and its Association with Obesity in Healthy Persons and in Patients with Myocardial Infarction in Two Hungarian Cohorts.

    BACKGROUND Human fetuin A (AHSG) has been associated with the development of obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and atherosclerosis. Observations on the role of AHSG rs4918 single-nucleotide polymorphism are contradictory. We investigated the association between variants of rs4918 and parameters of obesity, lipid status, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha), adipokines (adiponectin, resistin, leptin), and insulin resistance in healthy persons and in patients with previous myocardial infarction. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study comprising cohort 1 (81 healthy individuals) and cohort 2 (157 patients with previous myocardial infarction). We used the allele-specific KASP genotyping assay to detect rs4918 polymorphism. RESULTS In cohort 1, G-nucleotide carriers had significantly lower serum TNFalpha, adiponectin, and higher leptin concentrations than in non-G carriers. These differences, however, were not observed in cohort 2. In cohort 2, G-carriers had lower BMI and waist circumferences than in non-G carriers. The G allele was more frequent among lean than obese patients (RR=1.067, 95%CI=1.053-2.651, p=0.015). An association between BMI and rs4918 polymorphism was observed among patients without diabetes (CC/CG/GG genotypes: p=0.003, G vs. non-G allele: p=0.008) but not in diabetics. In addition, a strong linearity between BMI and the CC/CG/GG genotypes (association value: 4.416, p=0.036) and the frequency of the G allele (7.420, p=0.006) could be identified. In cohort 2, non-obese, non-diabetic G-carriers still had lower BMI and waist circumferences than in non-G carriers. CONCLUSIONS The rs4918 minor variant is associated with lower TNFalpha and adiponectin, higher leptin levels in healthy persons, and more favorable anthropomorphic parameters of obesity in cohort 2

    The evolution of a jet ejection of the ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg II X-1

    We present quasi-simultaneous, multi-epoch radio and X-ray measurements of Holmberg II X-1 using the European VLBI Network (EVN), the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), and the Chandra and Swift X-ray telescopes. The X-ray data show apparently hard spectra with steady X-ray luminosities four months apart from each other. In the high-resolution EVN radio observations, we have detected an extended milliarcsecond scale source with unboosted radio emission. The source emits non-thermal, likely optically thin synchrotron emission, and its morphology is consistent with a jet ejection. The 9-GHz VLA data show an arcsecond-scale triple structure of Holmberg II X-1 similar to that seen at lower frequencies. However, we find that the central ejection has faded by at least a factor of 7.3 over 1.5 yr. We estimate the dynamical age of the ejection to be higher than 2.1 yr. We show that such a rapid cooling can be explained with simple adiabatic expansion losses. These properties of Holmberg II X-1 imply that ULX radio bubbles may be inflated by ejecta instead of self-absorbed compact jets

    IGRJ17361-4441: a possible new accreting X-ray binary in NGC6388

    IGRJ17361-4441 is a newly discovered INTEGRAL hard X-ray transient, located in the globular cluster NGC6388. We report here the results of the X-ray and radio observations performed with Swift, INTEGRAL, RXTE, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) after the discovery of the source on 2011 August 11. In the X-ray domain, IGRJ17361-4441 showed virtually constant flux and spectral parameters up to 18 days from the onset of the outburst. The broad-band (0.5-100 keV) spectrum of the source could be reasonably well described by using an absorbed power-law component with a high energy cut-off (N_H\simeq0.8x10^(22) cm^(-2), {\Gamma}\simeq0.7-1.0, and E_cut\simeq25 keV) and displayed some evidence of a soft component below \sim2 keV. No coherent timing features were found in the RXTE data. The ATCA observation did not detect significant radio emission from IGRJ17361-4441, and provided the most stringent upper limit (rms 14.1 {\mu}Jy at 5.5 GHz) to date on the presence of any radio source close to the NGC6388 center of gravity. The improved position of IGRJ17361-4441 in outburst determined from a recent target of opportunity observation with Chandra, together with the X-ray flux and radio upper limits measured in the direction of the source, argue against its association with the putative intermediate-mass black hole residing in the globular cluster and with the general hypothesis that the INTEGRAL source is a black hole candidate. IGRJ17361-4441 might be more likely a new X-ray binary hosting an accreting neutron star. The ATCA radio non-detection also permits us to derive an upper limit to the mass of the suspected intermediate massive black hole in NGC6388 of <600 M\odot. This is a factor of 2.5 lower than the limit reported previously.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A lette
