Morphological and molecular characteristics do not confirm popular classification of the Brazil nut tree in Acre, Brazil.

In the State of Acre, the Brazil nut tree, Bertholletia excelsa (Lecythidaceae), is classified by the local population into two types according to morphological characteristics, including color and quality of wood, shape of the trunk and crown, and fruit production. We examined thereliability of this classification by comparing morphological and molecular data of four populations of Brazil nut trees from Vale do Rio Acre in the Brazilian Amazon. For the morphological analysis, we evaluated qualitative and quantitative information of the trees, fruits, and seeds. The molecular analysis was performed using RAPD and ISSR markers, with cluster analysis. Significant differences were found between the two types of Brazil nut trees for the characters diameter at breast height, fruit yield, fruit size, and number of seeds per fruit. Despite the significant correlation between the morphological characteristics and the popular classification, we observed all possible combinations of morphological characteristics in both types of Brazil nut trees. In some individuals, the classification did not correspond to any of the characteristics. The results obtained with molecular markers showed that the two locally classified types of Brazil nut trees did not differ genetically, indicating that there is no consistent separation between them

Evaluation of integrated daylighting and electric lighting design projects: Lessons learned from international case studies

This article presents and discusses the lessons learned from the monitoring of 25 integrated daylighting and electric lighting international case study projects. The case studies consist of real occupied buildings that have been monitored as part of the International Energy Agency (IEA) SHC Task 61/EBC Annex 77 Programme. The general goal of the case studies was to balance lighting energy use with occupants’ visual and non-visual requirements. This was achieved using innovative solutions for daylighting and electric lighting with advanced controls, but also implementing simple and out-of-the-box strategies. The findings suggest that energy demands for lighting can significantly be reduced by combining sensible daylight provision, efficient lighting sources, and advances in controls. Yet, the effective achievement of project goals requires adequate monitoring, fine-tuning, and verification. The findings also suggest that the adoption of “integrative” lighting – that is, lighting systems that address both visual and non-visual responses – is getting increasingly popular. Catering to non-visual requirements will likely drive further innovation in lighting technology. Currently, there is limited investment available for developing daylighting systems for integrative lighting, and the current related electric strategies often come at the risk of energy rebound effects. Overall, providing daylighting and understanding user requirements are fundamental steps towards achieving quality projects, with potential benefits beyond saving energy

Left atrial volume during stress is associated with increased risk of arrhythmias in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Introduction: In patients affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), left atrial volume index (LAVi) is associated with an increased risk of tachyarrhythmias and major clinical events. To date, the clinical meaning of LAVi measured during exercise (stress LAVi [sLAVi]) has not yet been investigated in HCM. This study sought to evaluate the correlation between LAVi/sLAVi and clinical outcome (risk of arrhythmias and heart failure [HF]) in patients with HCM. Methods and Results: We enrolled a total of 51 consecutive patients with HCM (39 men; mean age: 39.41 ± 17.9 years) who underwent standard and stress echocardiography, following a common protocol. During follow-up (median follow-up was 1.82 years), the following composite endpoints were collected: ARRHYT endpoint (atrial fibrillation, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (VT), sustained VT, ventricular fibrillation, syncope of likely cardiogenic nature, and sudden cardiac death) and HF endpoint (worsening of functional class and left ventricular ejection fraction, hospitalization, and death for end-stage HF). Eight patients were lost at follow-up. ARRHYT endpoint occurred in 13 (30.2%) patients (8, 18.6%, supraventricular and 10, 23.2%, ventricular arrhythmias), whereas HF endpoint occurred in 5 (11.6%) patients. sLAVi (mean value of 31.16 ± 10.15 mL/m2) performed better than rLAVi as a predictor of ARRHYT endpoint (Akaike Information Criterion: 48.37 vs. 50.37, if dichotomized according to the median values). A sLAVi value of 30 mL/m2 showed a predictive accuracy of 72.1% (C-statistics of 0.7346), with a high negative predictive value (87.5%). Conclusion: These findings encourage future studies on sLAVi, as a potential predictor of arrhythmias and adverse outcome in patients with HCM
