Confirmation of symmetrical distributions of clinical attachment loss and tooth loss in a homogeneous Mexican adult male population
Background/purpose
To ascertain whether or not clinical attachment loss and tooth loss are present with similar severity and prevalence across the two sides of the mouth in a homogeneous sample of urban male adults.
Materials and methods
A cross-sectional study was carried out on 161 policemen (a largely homogeneous group in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, sex, occupation, and medical/dental insurance) in Campeche, Mexico. Periodontal examinations were undertaken using the Florida Probe System in a dental chair by one trained and standardized examiner (kappa ≥ 0.60) to determine clinical attachment loss and tooth loss. We examined six sites in all teeth present in the mouth (a maximum of 168 sites, no third molars). Because of correlated data between observations, McNemar (for tooth loss) and Wilcoxon (for attachment loss) signed-rank tests were used to compare right and left sites within the same patient.
Results
The mean age was 38.4 ± 11.0 years. The mean number of teeth present was 24.4 ± 4.6; the mean number of periodontal sites/person was 146.7 ± 27.8. All P values were ≥ 0.05 (except for attachment loss in the upper first premolars), suggesting that there were no statistically significant differences between the right and left sides for the frequency of presentation of these two conditions.
Conclusion
Tooth loss and attachment loss measurements largely resemble each other on both sides of the mouth

The Metropolis and Evangelical Life: Coherence and Fragmentation in the ‘Lost City of London’
This article examines the interplay of different processes of cultural and subjective fragmentation experienced by conservative evangelical Anglicans, based on an ethnographic study of a congregation in central London. The author focuses on the evangelistic speaking practices of members of this church to explore how individuals negotiate contradictory norms of interaction as they move through different city spaces, and considers their response to tensions created by the demands of their workplace and their religious lives. Drawing on Georg Simmel’s ‘The Metropolis and Mental Life’, the author argues that their faith provides a sense of coherence and unity that responds to experiences of cultural fragmentation characteristic of everyday life in the city, while simultaneously leading to a specific consciousness of moral fragmentation that is inherent to conservative evangelicalism
The coherent interaction between matter and radiation - A tutorial on the Jaynes-Cummings model
The Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model is a milestone in the theory of coherent
interaction between a two-level system and a single bosonic field mode. This
tutorial aims to give a complete description of the model, analyzing the
Hamiltonian of the system, its eigenvalues and eigestates, in order to
characterize the dynamics of system and subsystems. The Rabi oscillations,
together with the collapse and revival effects, are distinguishing features of
the JC model and are important for applications in Quantum Information theory.
The framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) is chosen and two
fundamental experiments on the coherent interaction between Rydberg atoms and a
single cavity field mode are described.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. Tutorial. Submitted to a special issue of EPJ -

Origin of inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect detected at the Cu/Bi interface using lateral spin valves
Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0 (CC-BY).The spin transport and spin-to-charge current conversion properties of bismuth are investigated using permalloy/copper/bismuth (Py/Cu/Bi) lateral spin valve structures. The spin current is strongly absorbed at the surface of Bi, leading to ultrashort spin-diffusion lengths. A spin-to-charge current conversion is measured, which is attributed to the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect at the Cu/Bi interface. The spin-current-induced charge current is found to change direction with increasing temperature. A theoretical analysis relates this behavior to the complex spin structure and dispersion of the surface states at the Fermi energy. The understanding of this phenomenon opens novel possibilities to exploit spin-orbit coupling to create, manipulate, and detect spin currents in two-dimensional systems. This work was supported by the European Commission under the Marie Curie Actions (Grant No. 256470-ITAMOSCINOM), the SUDOE (Grant No. TRAIN2-SOE2/P1/E-280), and the European Research Council (Grant No. 257654-SPINTROS), by the Spanish MINECO under Projects No. MAT2012-37638, No. MAT2011-13099-E, No. MAT2011-27553-C02, No. MAT2014-51982-C2-1-R, No. MAT2015-69725-REDT,
