    Dark costs, missing data: shedding some light on services trade

    A structural gravity model is used to estimate barriers to services trade across many sectors, countries and time. Since the disaggregated output data needed to flexibly infer border barriers are often missing for services, we derive a novel methodology for projecting output data. The empirical implementation sheds light on the role of institutions, geography, size and digital infrastructure as determinants of border barriers. We find that border barriers have generally fallen over time but there are differences across sectors and countries. Notably, border effects for the smallest economies have remained stable, giving rise to a divergent pattern across countries

    Molecular biology of glutathione peroxidase 4: from genomic structure to developmental expression and neural function

    Selenoproteins have been recognized as modulators of brain function and signaling. Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (GPx4/PHGPx) is a unique member of the selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidases in mammals with a pivotal role in brain development and function. GPx4 exists as a cytosolic, mitochondrial, and nuclear isoform derived from a single gene. In mice, the GPx4 gene is located on chromosome 10 in close proximity to a functional retrotransposome that is expressed under the control of captured regulatory elements. Elucidation of crystallographic data uncovered structural peculiarities of GPx4 that provide the molecular basis for its unique enzymatic properties and substrate specificity. Monomeric GPx4 is multifunctional: it acts as a reducing enzyme of peroxidized phospholipids and thiols and as a structural protein. Transcriptional regulation of the different GPx4 isoforms requires several isoform-specific cis-regulatory sequences and trans-activating factors. Cytosolic and mitochondrial GPx4 are the major isoforms exclusively expressed by neurons in the developing brain. In stark contrast, following brain trauma, GPx4 is specifically upregulated in non-neuronal cells, i.e., reactive astrocytes. Molecular approaches to genetic modification in mice have revealed an essential and isoform-specific function for GPx4 in development and disease. Here we review recent findings on GPx4 with emphasis on its molecular structure and function and consider potential mechanisms that underlie neural development and neuropathological condition

    Self-organizing maps identify windows of opportunity for seasonal European summer predictions

    We combine a machine learning method and ensemble climate predictions to investigate windows of opportunity for seasonal predictability of European summer climate associated with the North Atlantic jet stream. We particularly focus on the impact of North Atlantic spring sea surface temperatures (SST) on the four dominant atmospheric teleconnections associated with the jet stream: the summer North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in positive and negative phases, the Atlantic Ridge (At. Ridge), and Atlantic Low (At. Low). We go beyond standard forecast practices by not only identifying these atmospheric teleconnections and their SST precursors but by making use of these identified precursors in the analysis of a dynamical forecast ensemble. Specifically, we train the neural network-based classifier Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) with ERA-20C reanalysis and combine it with model simulations from the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model in mixed resolution (MPI-ESM-MR). We use two different sets of 30-member hindcast ensembles initialized every May, one for training and evaluation between 1902 and 2008, and one for verification between 1980–2016, respectively. Among the four summer atmospheric teleconnections analyzed here, we find that At. Ridge simulated by MPI-ESM-MR shows the best agreement with ERA-20C, thereby representing with its occurrence windows of opportunity for skillful summer predictions. Conversely, At. Low shows the lowest agreement, which might limit the model skill for early warning of warmer than average summers. In summary, we find that spring SST patterns identified with a SOM analysis can be used to guess the dominant summer atmospheric teleconnections at initialization and guide a sub-selection of potential skillful ensemble members. This holds especially true for At. Ridge and At. Low and is unclear for summer NAO. We show that predictive skill in the selected ensemble exceeds that of the full ensemble over regions in the Euro-Atlantic domain where spring SST significantly correlates with summer sea level pressure (SLP). In particular, we find a significant improvement in predictive skill for SLP, geopotential height at 500 hPa, and 2 m temperature at 3–4 months lead time over Scandinavia, which is robust among the two sets of hindcast ensembles.     Predicting the Importance of Hospital Chaplain Care in a Trauma Population

    Background. The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if the importance of chaplain care is associated with and could be predicted by patient or injury characteristics. Methods. A telephone survey of recently discharged trauma patients was conducted. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine what factors are associated with the importance of chaplain care and satisfaction with chaplain care. Results. Self-reported religious affiliation was associated with the importance of chaplain care and importance of chaplain care was associated with satisfaction with chaplain care. Conclusions. The value of chaplain care cannot be measured by patient characteristics, therefore, chaplain care should be offered to all patients and families

    Marburg hemorrhagic fever in Durba and Watsa, Democratic Republic of the Congo: clinical documentation, features of illness, and treatment

    The objective of the present study was to describe day of onset and duration of symptoms of Marburg hemorrhagic fever (MHF), to summarize the treatments applied, and to assess the quality of clinical documentation. Surveillance and clinical records of 77 patients with MHF cases were reviewed. Initial symptoms included fever, headache, general pain, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia (median day of onset, day 1-2), followed by hemorrhagic manifestations (day 5-8+), and terminal symptoms included confusion, agitation, coma, anuria, and shock. Treatment in isolation wards was acceptable, but the quality of clinical documentation was unsatisfactory. Improved clinical documentation is necessary for a basic evaluation of supportive treatment

    Nuclear effects in atomic transitions

    Atomic electrons are sensitive to the properties of the nucleus they are bound to, such as nuclear mass, charge distribution, spin, magnetization distribution, or even excited level scheme. These nuclear parameters are reflected in the atomic transition energies. A very precise determination of atomic spectra may thus reveal information about the nucleus, otherwise hardly accessible via nuclear physics experiments. This work reviews theoretical and experimental aspects of the nuclear effects that can be identified in atomic structure data. An introduction to the theory of isotope shifts and hyperfine splitting of atomic spectra is given, together with an overview of the typical experimental techniques used in high-precision atomic spectroscopy. More exotic effects at the borderline between atomic and nuclear physics, such as parity violation in atomic transitions due to the weak interaction, or nuclear polarization and nuclear excitation by electron capture, are also addressed.Comment: review article, 53 pages, 14 figure

    Wood allocation trade-offs between fiber wall, fiber lumen, and axial parenchyma drive drought resistance in neotropical trees

    Functional relationships between wood density and measures of xylem hydraulic safety and efficiency are ambiguous, especially in wet tropical forests. In this meta-analysis, we move beyond wood density per se and identify relationships between xylem allocated to fibers, parenchyma, and vessels and measures of hydraulic safety and efficiency. We analyzed published data of xylem traits, hydraulic properties and measures of drought resistance from neotropical tree species retrieved from 346 sources. We found that xylem volume allocation to fiber walls increases embolism resistance, but at the expense of specific conductivity and sapwood capacitance. Xylem volume investment in fiber lumen increases capacitance, while investment in axial parenchyma is associated with higher specific conductivity. Dominant tree taxa from wet forests prioritize xylem allocation to axial parenchyma at the expense of fiber walls, resulting in a low embolism resistance for a given wood density and a high vulnerability to drought-induced mortality. We conclude that strong trade-offs between xylem allocation to fiber walls, fiber lumen, and axial parenchyma drive drought resistance in neotropical trees. Moreover, the benefits of xylem allocation to axial parenchyma in wet tropical trees might not outweigh the consequential low embolism resistance under more frequent and severe droughts in a changing climate.Peer reviewe
