    Development, factorial structure and reliability of the Multidimensional Scale of Emotional Regulation for Adolescents (MSERA): Preliminary analysis

    The evaluation of emotion regulation has been focused on the cognitive component and the emotion dysregulation. However, it is also important to include emotion identification and modulation of the response for the evaluation of the regulatory process. The aim of this study was to develop a multidimensional measure of emotion regulation process in adolescents and to examine its factorial structure and reliability. An instrumental study was performed with 887 Mexican adolescents aged 13 to 18. A preliminary version of the Multidimensional Scale of Emotion Regulation for Adolescents (MSERA) was developed based on focus groups and considering the assumptions of the theoretical models. The exploratory factor analysis yielded 56 items distributed in eight factors: Recognition of positive emotions, Expression of positive emotions, Emotional control, Suppression, Cognitive change, Physical reactions, Recognition of negative emotions and Difficulty to regulate. A confirmatory factor analysis using the Robust Unweighted Least Squares, corroborated the initial solution of eight factors and showed acceptable fit indexes, considering 47 items. Ordinal alpha coefficients obtained for the factors of the final model, indicated a good internal consistency (.85-.95). Results suggest that the MSERA can be used as a valid and reliable measure of emotion regulation in adolescents.Desarrollo, estructura factorial y fiabilidad de la Escala Multidimensional de Regulación Emocional para Adolescentes (MSERA). La evaluación de la regulación emocional se ha enfocado en el componente cognitivo y la desregulación; sin embargo, es importante incluir la identificación emocional y la modulación de respuesta para la evaluación del proceso regulatorio. El objetivo de esta investigación fue desarrollar una medida multidimensional del proceso de regulación emocional en adolescentes y examinar su estructura factorial y fiabilidad. Se realizó un estudio instrumental con 887 adolescentes mexicanos de 13 a 18 años. Se elaboró una versión preliminar de la Escala Multidimensional de Regulación Emocional para Adolescentes (MSERA) basada en los grupos focales y en modelos teóricos. El análisis factorial exploratorio arrojó 56 ítems distribuidos en ocho factores: Expresión de emociones positivas, Control emocional, Supresión, Cambio cognitivo, Reacciones físicas, Reconocimiento de emociones negativas y Dificultad para regular. El análisis factorial confirmatorio con el método de mínimos cuadrados robustos no ponderados, corroboró la solución de ocho factores con 47 ítems, con índices de ajuste aceptables. Las alfas ordinales del modelo final (.85-.95), indicaron buena consistencia interna. Los resultados sugieren que el MSERA se podría utilizar como una medida válida y fiable, de la regulación emocional en adolescentes

    Impact of the Method Used to Select Gas Exchange Data for Estimating the Resting Metabolic Rate, as Supplied by Breath-by-Breath Metabolic Carts

    The method used to select representative gas exchange data from large datasets influences the resting metabolic rate (RMR) returned. This study determines which of three methods yields the lowest RMR (as recommended for use in human energy balance studies), and in which method the greatest variance in RMR is explained by classical determinants of this variable. A total of 107 young and 74 middle-aged adults underwent a 30 min RMR examination using a breath-by-breath metabolic cart. Three gas exchange data selection methods were used: (i) steady state (SSt) for 3, 4, 5, or 10 min, (ii) a pre-defined time interval (TI), i.e., 6–10, 11–15, 16–20, 21–25, 26–30, 6–25, or 6–30 min, and (iii) “filtering”, setting thresholds depending on the mean RMR value obtained. In both cohorts, the RMRs yielded by the SSt and filtering methods were significantly lower (p < 0.021) than those yielded by the TI method. No differences in RMR were seen under the different conditions of the SSt method, or of the filtering method. No differences were seen between the methods in terms of the variance in RMR explained by its classical determinants.     Ab initio lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling of Bi(111)

    We present a comprehensive ab initio study of structural, electronic, lattice dynamical and electron-phonon coupling properties of the Bi(111) surface within density functional perturbation theory. Relativistic corrections due to spin-orbit coupling are consistently taken into account. As calculations are carried out in a periodic slab geometry, special attention is given to the convergence with respect to the slab thickness. Although the electronic structure of Bi(111) thin films varies significantly with thickness, we found that the lattice dynamics of Bi(111) is quite robust and appears converged already for slabs as thin as 6 bilayers. Changes of interatomic couplings are confined mostly to the first two bilayers, resulting in super-bulk modes with frequencies higher than the optic bulk spectrum, and in an enhanced density of states at lower frequencies for atoms in the first bilayer. Electronic states of the surface band related to the outer part of the hole Fermi surfaces exhibit a moderate electron-phonon coupling of about 0.45, which is larger than the coupling constant of bulk Bi. States at the inner part of the hole surface as well as those forming the electron pocket close to the zone center show much increased couplings due to transitions into bulk projected states near Gamma_bar. For these cases, the state dependent Eliashberg functions exhibit pronounced peaks at low energy and strongly deviate in shape from a Debye-like spectrum, indicating that an extraction of the coupling strength from measured electronic self-energies based on this simple model is likely to fail.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figure

    Analysis of discrimination against people with disabilities in the processes of personnel selection

    Existen diversos elementos en el ámbito laboral que interfieren en la contratación de personas con discapacidad. Este artículo ofrece un estudio sobre los procesos de reclutamiento y selección llevados a cabo por medianas y grandes empresas de la gran Caracas y su interés manifiesto de contactar, para entrevistas de empleo, a personas con discapacidad permanente; expresado durante los meses de marzo a agosto del año 2017. Para ello, se seleccionó una muestra no probabilística-incidental de trescientas unidades económicas catalogadas por el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE) como mediana y gran empresa, las cuales para el período de estudio realizaron convocatorias para contratación de trabajadores a través de avisos publicados en diarios impresos y páginas de empleo en internet. Se envió un total de trescientos pares de síntesis curriculares, cada par con contenidos iguales en cuanto a conocimientos, experiencias y competencias de las personas aspirantes al cargo, pero con la diferencia de que sólo una presentaba una condición de discapacidad permanente. Luego, se midió la proporción de devolución de llamadas o correos recibidos para concertar una entrevista de trabajo. La diferencia registrada en las proporciones resultantes es atribuible a la condición de discapacidad, lo que concuerda con la definición legal de discriminación.Several elements in the workplace interfere with the hiring process of persons with disabilities. This article offers a study on the methods of recruitment and selection carried out by medium and large companies of the great Caracas and their manifest interest in to contact for employment’s interviews people with permanent disability, expressed during March to August of the year 2017. A non-probabilistic-incidental sample of three hundred economic units cataloged as medium and large company by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) was selected, which for the study period made had called for hiring workers through advertisements published in printed newspapers and jobseeker’s web pages. A total of three hundred resume’s pair were sent, each pair with same contents concerning knowledge, experiences, and competencies of the person aspiring to the position, but with the difference that only one presented a condition of permanent disability. Then, the proportion of return of calls or emails received to agree a job interview was measured. The difference registered in the resulting proportions are attributable to the condition of disability, which coincides with the legal definition of discrimination

    Effect of dipolar interactions on the magnetization of a cubic array of nanomagnets

    We investigated the effect of intermolecular dipolar interactions on a cubic 3D ensemble of 5X5X4=100 nanomagnets, each with spin S=5S = 5. We employed the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation to solve for the magnetization M(B)M(B) curves for several values of the damping constant α\alpha, the induction sweep rate, the lattice constant aa, the temperature TT, and the magnetic anisotropy field HAH_A. We find that the smaller the α\alpha, the stronger the maximum induction required to produce hysteresis. The shape of the hysteresis loops also depends on the damping constant. We find further that the system magnetizes and demagnetizes at decreasing magnetic field strengths with decreasing sweep rates, resulting in smaller hysteresis loops. Variations of aa within realistic values (1.5 nm - 2.5 nm) show that the dipolar interaction plays an important role in the magnetic hysteresis by controlling the relaxation process. The TT dependencies of α\alpha and of MM are presented and discussed with regard to recent experimental data on nanomagnets. HAH_A enhances the size of the hysteresis loops for external fields parallel to the anisotropy axis, but decreases it for perpendicular external fields. Finally, we reproduce and test an M(B)M(B) curve for a 2D-system [M. Kayali and W. Saslow, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 174404 (2004)]. We show that its hysteretic behavior is only weakly dependent on the shape anisotropy field and the sweep rate, but depends sensitively upon the dipolar interactions. Although in 3D systems, dipole-dipole interactions generally diminish the hysteresis, in 2D systems, they strongly enhance it. For both square 2D and rectangular 3D lattices with B(x^+y^){\bm B}||(\hat{\bm x}+\hat{\bm y}), dipole-dipole interactions can cause large jumps in the magnetization.Comment: 15 pages 14 figures, submitted to Phys.
