Information on the first records of Sawadaea bicornis (Wallr.) Homma on the ornamental maple (Acer velutinum Boiss.), an introduced species in Ukraine, is given. For the first time, the fungus was found in 2014 in Academician O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden (Kyiv) and was observed here in the next year. Infection of A. velutinum was not significant. Mycelium of the fungus was clearly visible on the upper side of leaves as diffuse gray spots. Fruiting bodies were formed. These records are new for both Ukraine and Europe. It is suggested that this finding is an evidence of a possibility of local races of powdery mildews parasitizing the native hosts to infect the closely related introduced plants.

Comparative assessment of spray nozzles efficacy in the control of fusarium head blight in the barley crops using developed quantitative PCR assay

Fusarium species infect cereal spikes during anthesis and cause Fusarium head blight (FHB), a destructive disease of cereal crops with worldwide economic relevance. The necessity for these phytopathogenic fungi effective control becomes increasingly important for the production of both cultivated plants and those plants seeds. Fungicide application is a key methodology for controlling the disease development and mycotoxin contamination in cereals. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is currently the most commonly admitted DNA-based technology for specific, rapid and precise Fusarium detection. We have developed and patented the method for detection and quantitative determination of phytopathogenic fungi F. avenaceum and F. graminearum in plant seeds using Real-Time PCR with a pair of primers, designed to amplify sequences of the internal transcribed spacer at the ribosomal RNA gene cluster of those phytopathogenic fungi. This study was aimed to perform a comparative assessment of the efficacy of different spray nozzles for antifungal treatment to control F. avenaceum and F. graminearum infection of barley grains using a developed qPCR diagnostic system. A single application of a fungicide (active ingredient's content: 250 g/l propiconazole, 80 g/l cyproconazole) at BBCH 65 (middle of flowering) was carried out. For this purpose, four spray nozzles with different technical characteristics were used: Flat Fan 030, Amistar 030, Defy 3D 030 and Vegetable 060 (Pentair, USA). DNA-based fungi detection and identification was performed using conventional PCR and developed qPCR. The level of mycotoxins in barley grain was determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Grain count in the ear of barley and thousand seed weight (TSW) were also examined. A single application of the fungicide inhibited the development of FHB and is accompanied by the slight increase of TSW values in treated plants. It was found, that the most effective fungicide was against F. avenaceum and F. graminearum. The inhibitory effect depended on sprayer type. According to qPCR results, the best performance was achieved when using Amistar 030 and Flat Fan (FF) 030 sprayers. The average concentration of deoxynivalenol (DON) content in all barley grain samples were up to 4 times higher than the permissible level. Overall, because of the high contamination levels, found in tested samples, it is possible to state that a single application of the fungicide at the flowering phase was not able to effectively reduce DON contamination in barley samples. The developed test-system for qPCR provides new important information in the study of the effectiveness of fungicides and development of strategies to control FHB in cereals, not achievable with conventional PCR

Hydrogen-induced sp2-sp3 rehybridization in epitaxial silicene

We report on the hydrogenation of (3×3)/(4×4) silicene epitaxially grown on Ag(111) studied by in situ Raman spectroscopy and state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Our results demonstrate that hydrogenation of (3×3)/(4×4) silicene leads to the formation of two different atomic structures which exhibit distinct spectral vibrational modes. Raman selection rules clearly show that the Si atoms undergo a rehybridization in both cases from a mixed sp2-sp3 to a dominating sp3 state increasing the distance between the two silicene sublattices. This results in a softening of the in-plane and a stiffening of the out-of-plane phonon modes. Nevertheless, hydrogenated epitaxial silicene retains a two-dimensional nature and hence can be considered as epitaxial silicane. The level of hydrogenation can be determined by the intensity ratio of the Raman modes with different symmetries.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (VO1261/4-1); ESF Nachwuchsforschergruppe "E-PISA"; TUBITAK (116C073); The Science Academy, Turkey, under the BAGEP progra

Non stoichiometry effect and disorder in Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films obtained by flash evaporation Raman scattering investigation

The cation disorder in Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films grown by flash evaporation of ZnS, CuS and SnS binary compounds has been studied by Raman spectroscopy. Process parameters such as the substrate temperature during the evaporation and the Ar pressure in the post-thermal treatment determined the samples' composition and Raman spectra. As a measure of cation disorder, the half-width and relative intensity of the Raman band peaking at 331-332 cm-1 is analysed. Comparison of the spectra for different samples of known composition showed that the relative intensity of the 331 cm-1 defect peak correlates with the previously reported theoretical prediction about enhancement of antisite defect formation in Cu2ZnSnS4 under "Cu-poor, Zn-rich" conditions. For "Cu-rich, Zn-poor" films, further experimental confirmation was obtained of the previously detected effect of the enhancement of cation disorder under intense optical excitationThis research is supported by the People Programme (Marie Curie Actions) of the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program FP7/2007-2013/ under REA grant greement 269167 (PVICOKEST), the Spanish MINECO project (KEST- PV, ENE2010-21541-C03) and the OPTEC grant. Nanostructured silver films have been prepared by thermal deposition on silicon, and their properties as SERS substrates investigated. The optimal conditions of the post-growth annealing of the substrates were established. Atomic force microscopy study revealed that the silver films with relatively dense and homogeneous arrays of 60–80-nm high pyramidal nanoislands are the most efficient for SERS of both organic dye and inorganic nanoparticles analytes. The noticeable enhancement of the Raman signal from colloidal nanoparticles with the help of silver island films is reported for the first time

The n-type semiconductor system Bi2Te3Bi2Se3 is known as a low-temperature thermoelectric material with a potentially high efficiency. Herein, a facile approach is reported to synthesize core/shell heterostructured Bi2Te2Se/Bi2Te3 nanosheets (NSs) with lateral dimensions of 1-3 mu m and thickness of about 50nm. Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3, as well as heterostructured Bi2Te2Se/Bi2Te3 NSs are obtained via colloidal synthesis. Heterostructured NSs show an inhomogeneous distribution of the chalcogen atoms forming selenium and tellurium-rich layers across the NS thickness, resulting in a core/shell structure. Detailed morphological studies reveal that these structures contain nanosized pores. These features contribute to the overall thermoelectric properties of the material, inducing strong phonon scattering at grain boundaries in compacted solids. NSs are processed into nanostructured bulks through spark plasma sintering of dry powders to form a thermoelectric material with high power factor. Electrical characterization of our materials reveals a strong anisotropic behavior in consolidated pellets. It is further demonstrated that by simple thermal annealing, core/shell structure can be controllably transformed into alloyed one. Using this approach pellets with Bi2Te2.55Se0.45 composition are obtained, which exhibit low thermal conductivity and high power factor for in-plane direction with zT of 1.34 at 400K

Phonon Raman spectra of colloidal CdTe nanocrystals: effect of size, non-stoichiometry and ligand exchange

Resonant Raman study reveals the noticeable effect of the ligand exchange on the nanocrystal (NC) surface onto the phonon spectra of colloidal CdTe NC of different size and composition. The oleic acid ligand exchange for pyridine ones was found to change noticeably the position and width of the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon mode, as well as its intensity ratio to overtones. The broad shoulder above the LO peak frequency was enhanced and sharpened after pyridine treatment, as well as with decreasing NC size. The low-frequency mode around 100 cm-1 which is commonly related with the disorder-activated acoustical phonons appears in smaller NCs but is not enhanced after pyridine treatment. Surprisingly, the feature at low-frequency shoulder of the LO peak, commonly assigned to the surface optical phonon mode, was not sensitive to ligand exchange and concomitant close packing of the NCs. An increased structural disorder on the NC surface, strain and modified electron-phonon coupling is discussed as the possible reason of the observed changes in the phonon spectrum of ligand-exchanged CdTe NCs

Investigation of electron-phonon interaction in bulk and nanostructured semiconductors

    No full text
In this paper, the problem of electron-phonon interaction (EPI) innsemiconductor crystals and quantum dots (QDs) is considered. It is shown that the model of strong EPI developed for organic molecular crystals can be successfully applied to bulk and nanosized semiconductors. The idea of the approach proposed here is to describe the experimental Raman (or absorption) spectra containing the phonon replicas theoretically by varying the EPI constant. The main parameter of the theoretical expression describing the experimental spectrum is the ratio of EPI constant to the frequency of the corresponding phonon mode. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, we have found that decreasing the size of CdSxSe₁₋x QDs embedded in borosilicate glass matrix results in some enhancement of electron-phonon interaction
