Commentary on An Examination of the Contextual Environment of Families with Sexually Abused Adolescents

    Get PDF
The focus of this article is on the role of family in adolescent outcomes when sexual abuse has occurred. The authors identify environmental factors for promoting well-being among adolescents. Two hypotheses aim to examine the systemic influence on adolescents who have been sexually abused, with regard to: 1) mesosystemic barriers (i.e., low levels of school engagement and peer relationships), and 2) exosystemic risk factors (i.e., low levels of social support, socioeconomic status, and community safety, as well as large community size)

A Wolbachia-uninfected population of Cx. pipiens was however described in South Africa and was recently proposed to represent a cryptic species where Wolbachia spread has been prevented by reproductive isolation. In this study, we reconsider the existence of this novel species by undertaking an extensive screening for the presence of Wolbachia-uninfected Cx. pipiens specimens and by characterizing their genetic relatedness with known members of the complex. We first reported on the presence of Wolbachia-uninfected specimens in several Cx. pipiens breeding sites in Europe and North Africa. Using a multi-locus typing scheme, we next confirm that these uninfected specimens unambiguously belong to the Cx. pipiens complex. While, uninfected specimens shared ancestral nuclear DNA polymorphism with infected Cx. pipiens specimens, they also harbor novel mitochondrial haplotypes which are closely related, but different, to those found in all other Cx. pipiens complex members. Overall, these results corroborate the presence of a cryptic species within the Cx. pipiens complex where ancestral levels of mitochondrial diversity have been maintained. We further evidence a geographic distribution far wider than previously suspected, ranging from the North of Europe to the South of Africa.Peer reviewe

The Secretaria de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación (SAGARPA) and the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro (UAAAN) have signed agreements, looking a vision more attached to the reality of the conditions, factors and obstacles that affect productive process in Mexico, in order to generate recommendations that increase the efficiency of the involved programs of support with the farming production. Derived of the participation in the Rapid Assessment of Program Acquisition of Productive Assets: Component Protected Agriculture 2008, the characteristics and the context are approached in which the agriculture protected in Mexico is develops. The definition of “protected agriculture†settles down, their characteristics are described and the dynamics that has presented, as well as the climatic surroundings this activity is develops. Also is presented, in function of the risk of it, in which states this activity can be implemented. In addition, the phenomenon of the vulnerability with respect to the agriculture protected in Mexico is described. Finally, the factors that affect the impulse of the protected agriculture are described: the low level of the curve of learning of the interested ones; the fitosanitary uncertainty; the high investment of the greenhouses, the operation costs for temperature control and relative humidity, or the wrong design; the production scale. In favor of impelling the development of protected agriculture, one concludes that the greenhouses are a viable alternative to surpass the production generated in the smallholdings.Greenhouse, agriculture, environmental risks, agricultural production, vegetables., Agribusiness,

Graph complexity analysis identifies an ETV5 tumor-specific network in human and murine low-grade glioma

    Get PDF
Conventional differential expression analyses have been successfully employed to identify genes whose levels change across experimental conditions. One limitation of this approach is the inability to discover central regulators that control gene expression networks. In addition, while methods for identifying central nodes in a network are widely implemented, the bioinformatics validation process and the theoretical error estimates that reflect the uncertainty in each step of the analysis are rarely considered. Using the betweenness centrality measure, we identified Etv5 as a potential tissue-level regulator in murine neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1) low-grade brain tumors (optic gliomas). As such, the expression of Etv5 and Etv5 target genes were increased in multiple independently-generated mouse optic glioma models relative to non-neoplastic (normal healthy) optic nerves, as well as in the cognate human tumors (pilocytic astrocytoma) relative to normal human brain. Importantly, differential Etv5 and Etv5 network expression was not directly the result of Nf1 gene dysfunction in specific cell types, but rather reflects a property of the tumor as an aggregate tissue. Moreover, this differential Etv5 expression was independently validated at the RNA and protein levels. Taken together, the combined use of network analysis, differential RNA expression findings, and experimental validation highlights the potential of the computational network approach to provide new insights into tumor biology

Fault-tolerant efficient control of six-phase induction generators in wind energy conversion systems with series-parallel machine-side converters

This work discusses the implementation of an efficient fault-tolerant control m a multiphase wind energy conversion system. The conversion system consists of an asymmetrical six-phase induction generator supplied by four voltage source converters (VSCs) m a hybrid series/parallel configuration. Post-fault operation must preserve the current ratings of the system and should also maximize the generated power by means of a proper flux adjustment. Both requirements are achieved m this work using a non-linear optimization analysis and some modifications m the control scheme. Simulation results confirm the optimal and safe performance of the wind energy system under study
