Comment on "Spin-1 aggregation model in one dimension"

    M. Girardi and W. Figueiredo have proposed a simple model of aggregation in one dimension to mimic the self-assembly of amphiphiles in aqueous solution [Phys. Rev. E 62, 8344 (2000)]. We point out that interesting results can be obtained if a different set of interactions is considered, instead of their choice (the s=1 Ising model).Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Direct determination of the crystal field parameters of Dy, Er and Yb impurities in the skutterudite compound CeFe4_{4}P12_{12} by Electron Spin Resonance

Despite extensive research on the skutterudites for the last decade, their electric crystalline field ground state is still a matter of controversy. We show that Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements can determine the full set of crystal field parameters (CFPs) for the Th cubic symmetry (Im3) of the Ce1−x_{1-x}Rx_{x}Fe4_{4}P12_{12} (R = Dy, Er, Yb, x≲0.003x\lesssim 0.003) skutterudite compounds. From the analysis of the ESR data the three CFPs, B4c, B6c and B6t were determined for each of these rare-earths at the Ce3+^{3+} site. The field and temperature dependence of the measured magnetization for the doped crystals are in excellent agreement with the one predicted by the CFPs Bnm derived from ESR.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to appear in PR

Transmission network expansion planning considering weighted transmission loading relief nodal indexes

This paper presents a model and a solution approach for the transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) problem that integrates security constraints given by weighted transmission loading relief (WTLR) indexes. Such indexes integrate shift and power distribution factors and allow to measure the severity of overloads in normal conditions and under any single contingency. Furthermore, the inclusion of small-scale generation was considered as complementary to TNEP solutions. The proposed model was solved by means of the metaheuristic NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II), which enabled to find a set of solutions that represent a trade-off between the cost of the expansion plan and its security level. Several tests were performed on the 6-bus Garver system and the IEEE 24-bus reliability test system, thus showing the applicability of the proposed approach. It was found that the inclusion of small-scale generation in strategic nodes allows to reduce the cost of expansion plans and increases their level of security for single contingencies

Toward a Psychology of Surrogate Decision Making

In everyday life, many of the decisions that we make are made on behalf of other people. A growing body of research suggests that we often, but not always, make different decisions on behalf of other people than the other person would choose. This is problematic in the practical case of legally designated surrogate decision makers, who may not meet the substituted judgment standard. Here, we review evidence from studies of surrogate decision making and examine the extent to which surrogate decision making accurately predicts the recipient’s wishes, or if it is an incomplete or distorted application of the surrogate’s own decision-making processes. We find no existing domain-general model of surrogate decision making. We propose a framework by which surrogate decision making can be assessed and a novel domain-general theory as a unifying explanatory concept for surrogate decisions

Smectic Liquid Crystals: Materials with One-Dimensional, Periodic Order

Smectic liquid crystals are materials formed by stacking deformable, fluid layers. Though smectics prefer to have flat, uniformly-spaced layers, boundary conditions can impose curvature on the layers. Since the layer spacing and curvature are intertwined, the problem of finding minimal configurations for the layers becomes highly nontrivial. We discuss various topological and geometrical aspects of these materials and present recent progress on finding some exact layer configurations. We also exhibit connections to the study of certain embedded minimal surfaces and briefly summarize some important open problems.Comment: 16 page

The origin of the Acheulean: the 1.7 million-year-old site of FLK West, Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)

The appearance of the Acheulean is one of the hallmarks of human evolution. It represents the emergence of a complex behavior, expressed in the recurrent manufacture of large-sized tools, with standardized forms, implying more advance forethought and planning by hominins than those required by the precedent Oldowan technology. The earliest known evidence of this technology dates back to c. 1.7 Ma. and is limited to two sites (Kokiselei [Kenya] and Konso [Ethiopia]), both of which lack fauna. The functionality of these earliest Acheulean assemblages remains unknown. Here we present the discovery of another early Acheulean site also dating to c. 1.7 Ma from Olduvai Gorge. This site provides evidence of the earliest steps in developing the Acheulean technology and is the oldest Acheulean site in which stone tools occur spatially and functionally associated with the exploitation of fauna. Simple and elaborate large-cutting tools (LCT) and handaxes co-exist at FLK West, showing that complex cognition was present from the earliest stages of the Acheulean. Here we provide a detailed technological study and evidence of the use of these tools on the butchery and consumption of fauna, probably by early Homo erectus sensu lato
