Maximum likelihood estimation in a partially observed stratified regression model with censored data
The stratified proportional intensity model generalizes Cox's proportional
intensity model by allowing different groups of the population under study to
have distinct baseline intensity functions. In this article, we consider the
problem of estimation in this model when the variable indicating the stratum is
unobserved for some individuals in the studied sample. In this setting, we
construct nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators for the parameters of the
stratified model and we establish their consistency and asymptotic normality.
Consistent estimators for the limiting variances are also obtained
The Optimal Path of the Chinese Renminbi
This paper provides evidence on the consistency of the determination of the Chinese real effective exchange rate (REER) over time. Especially, we validate coin- tegration between the REER and a set of fundamentals using recent developments in model selection. Error correction model (ECM) path dependence in model se- lection is addressed by using the General-To-Specific (GETS) approach enabling us to obtain empirically constant and encompassing ECM. As inference in finite sam- ples is commonly of concern, statistics' distributional properties for cointegration tests are estimated by Monte Carlo simulations. The final specification of the model is compatible with the natural real exchange rate of Stein (1994). We study the implications of our findings in terms of foreign exchange policy.Exchange Rate, Equilibrium value, GETS, Global Imbalances
Asymptotic theory for the Cox model with missing time-dependent covariate
The relationship between a time-dependent covariate and survival times is
usually evaluated via the Cox model. Time-dependent covariates are generally
available as longitudinal data collected regularly during the course of the
study. A frequent problem, however, is the occurence of missing covariate data.
A recent approach to estimation in the Cox model in this case jointly models
survival and the longitudinal covariate. However, theoretical justification of
this approach is still lacking. In this paper we prove existence and
consistency of the maximum likelihood estimators in a joint model. The
asymptotic distribution of the estimators is given along with a consistent
estimator of the asymptotic variance.Comment: Published at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/009053606000000038 in the

Interpretation of the Hubble diagram in a nonhomogeneous universe
In the standard cosmological framework, the Hubble diagram is interpreted by
assuming that the light emitted by standard candles propagates in a spatially
homogeneous and isotropic spacetime. However, the light from "point
sources"--such as supernovae--probes the Universe on scales where the
homogeneity principle is no longer valid. Inhomogeneities are expected to
induce a bias and a dispersion of the Hubble diagram. This is investigated by
considering a Swiss-cheese cosmological model, which (1) is an exact solution
of the Einstein field equations, (2) is strongly inhomogeneous on small scales,
but (3) has the same expansion history as a strictly homogeneous and isotropic
universe. By simulating Hubble diagrams in such models, we quantify the
influence of inhomogeneities on the measurement of the cosmological parameters.
Though significant in general, the effects reduce drastically for a universe
dominated by the cosmological constant.Comment: 25 pages, 25 figures. Typos and Eqs. (2.15), (2.17), (4.16), (4.20),

International audienceColors of Caviar : the star restaurant is a space of artistic representation. The chef in a high-class restaurant appears both as a craftsman who controls recipes and as an artist, fanciful, imaginative, inspired, who has to achieve performances every day. The study of the menus of top restaurants is very informative: vocabulary, language patterns and used rhetoric (metaphors, metonymies, hyperboles, etc.) serve to inform us (very few) on what we will eat and to guarantee new and extraordinary and ephemeral foods. The gastronomic restaurant as a whole is a cultural place: its decor (music, painting, architecture), its rites and rhythms (the salvation of the chef, the parade of servers, the simultaneous discovery of the dishes), convince us that eating is an art and the guests are actors.
International audienceThe elaboration of a restaurant menu as a text aiming at seducing and at convincing visitors, infers that it does not merely enumerates various dishes among which we are to choose from, but that it is a rhetorical production whose processes need to be analysed and whose function needs to be understood. The corpus being studied consists of gourmet menus selected from about twenty fine restaurants. It certainly enables us to observe the main figures of speech (metaphors, metonymies); above all, it reveals the great variety of the rhetorical gear in use : analogies, transgressions, systems of values are as many means of creating the "genuine" flavour of food.
11 pagesInternational audienceWe call prefigurative an object whose primary function is to allow whoever manipulates it to represent an object, a situation, an action that has not yet happened ; the prefigured object is particular because it not only exists to convey meaning but also to inform, to get us to believe and finally to make us act. This article aims to outline the semiotic analysis of one of these objects, the restaurant menu: leaving aside the verbal text, we shall examine the material object which is its support (paper, cardboard, slate, screen, etc..) and see that it directs our receptions and predisposes us by its material, its size, its touch, its typography and its layout to perceive the true taste of things.
