KHT cold stabilization: A scanning electron microscopy study of the formation of surface deposits on stainless steel in model wines

    Get PDF
The incidence of yeast cells and wine polysaccharides and polyphenols in the formation of adherent KHT crystals on stainless steel surfaces during cold stabilization was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Additives were responsible for differences in the deposit configuration, the crystal shape and size as well as in the KHT crystallization kinetics. Yeast cells act as heterogeneous primary nucleation germs for KHT crystal formation. Colloids from wines interacted with KHT crystal faces and affected growth. It was confirmed that polyphenols strongly inhibit the crystallization and result in small crystals with a unidimensional growth. In contrast, with polyphenols, cubic crystals were obtained when wine polysaccharides were associated with yeast cells

Phase Transition in a Model with Non-Compact Symmetry on Bethe Lattice and the Replica Limit

We solve O(n,1)O(n,1) nonlinear vector model on Bethe lattice and show that it exhibits a transition from ordered to disordered state for 0n<10 \leq n < 1. If the replica limit n0n\to 0 is taken carefully, the model is shown to reduce to the corresponding supersymmetric model. The latter was introduced by Zirnbauer as a toy model for the Anderson localization transition. We argue thus that the non-compact replica models describe correctly the Anderson transition features. This should be contrasted to their failure in the case of the level correlation problem.Comment: 21 pages, REVTEX, 2 Postscript figures, uses epsf styl

Epistemic policy networks in the European Union’s CBRN risk mitigation policy

    No full text
This paper offers insights into an innovative and currently flagship approach of the European Union (EU) to the mitigation of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks. Building on its long-time experience in the CBRN field, the EU has incorporated methods familiar to the students of international security governance: it is establishing regional networks of experts and expertise. CBRN Centers of Excellence, as they are officially called, aim to contribute to the security and safety culture in different parts of Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, and South East Europe, in the broadly construed CBRN area. These regional networks represent a modern form of security cooperation, which can be conceptualized as an epistemic policy networks approach. It offers flexibility to the participating states, which have different incentives to get involved. At the same, however, the paper identifies potential limitations and challenges of epistemic policy networks in this form

Characteristics of gate-all-around silicon nanowire field effect transistors with asymmetric channel width and source/drain doping concentration

    Get PDF
We performed 3D simulations to demonstrate structural effects in sub-20 nm gate-all-around silicon nanowire field effect transistors having asymmetric channel width along the channel direction. We analyzed the differences in the electrical and physical properties for various slopes of the channel width in asymmetric silicon nanowire field effect transistors (SNWFETs) and compared them to symmetrical SNWFETs with uniform channel width. In the same manner, the effects of the individual doping concentration at the source and drain also have been investigated. For various structural conditions, the current and switching characteristics are seriously affected. The differences attributed to the doping levels and geometric conditions are due to the electric field and electron density profile. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Dewetting of thin polymer films near the glass transition

Dewetting of ultra-thin polymer films near the glass transition exhibits unexpected front morphologies [G. Reiter, Phys. Rev. Lett., 87, 186101 (2001)]. We present here the first theoretical attempt to understand these features, focusing on the shear-thinning behaviour of these films. We analyse the profile of the dewetting film, and characterize the time evolution of the dry region radius, Rd(t)R_{d}(t), and of the rim height, hm(t)h_{m}(t). After a transient time depending on the initial thickness, hm(t)h_{m}(t) grows like t\sqrt{t} while Rd(t)R_{d}(t) increases like exp(t)\exp{(\sqrt{t})}. Different regimes of growth are expected, depending on the initial film thickness and experimental time range.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures Revised version, published in Physical Review Letters: F. A Pluralistic Theory of Wordhood

    Get PDF
What are words and how should we individuate them? There are two main answers on the philosophical market. For some, words are bundles of structural-functional features defining a unique performance profile. For others, words are non-eternal continuants individuated by their causal-historical ancestry. These conceptions offer competing views of the nature of words, and it seems natural to assume that at most one of them can capture the essence of wordhood. This paper makes a case for pluralism about wordhood: the view that there is a plurality of acceptable conceptions of the nature of words, none of which is uniquely entitled to inform us as to what wordhood consists in

In-situ Analysis of Laminated Composite Materials by X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography and Digital Volume Correlation

    Get PDF
The complex mechanical behaviour of composite materials, due to internal heterogeneity and multi-layered composition impose deeper studies. This paper presents an experimental investigation technique to perform volume kinematic measurements in composite materials. The association of X-ray micro-computed tomography acquisitions and Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) technique allows the measurement of displacements and deformations in the whole volume of composite specimen. To elaborate the latter, composite fibres and epoxy resin are associated with metallic particles to create contrast during X-ray acquisition. A specific in situ loading device is presented for three-point bending tests, which enables the visualization of transverse shear effects in composite structures
