Pam Dupin-Bryant — Passion For Higher Education

    Get PDF
In a constantly changing world, where the concept of working in one field, let alone for one employer, for a lifetime, is becoming a rare thing, Dr. Pamela Dupin-Bryant has been a ‘True Blooded Aggie’ for over twenty years. She completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Utah State and has held academic positions at USU since 1994. Dr. Dupin-Bryant attributes this longevity to her passion for teaching young people and for her love of Utah State. This dedication to teaching has brought numerous accolades throughout her career, with the latest the recognition by USU as the 2016 Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year.https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/huntsman_news/1306/thumbnail.jp

Una clase especial de Hipersuperficies parametrizadas por líneas de curvatura en R4

In this paper we study hypersurfaces in R4 parametrized by lines of curvature with three distinct principal curvatures and with Laplace invariants mji = mki = 0; mjik 6= 0 for i; j; k distinct fixed indices. We characterize locally a generic family of such hypersurfaces in terms of the principal curvatures and three vector valued functions of one variable, this family includes a classe of Dupin hypersurfaces. Moreover, weshow that these vector valued functions are invariant under inversions and homotheties.

Intertextual Adaptability of the Character of Sherlock Holmes from Literature to Film Production

    Get PDF
This study explores the theme of intertextuality and adaptation between literature and film on the basis of Sherlock Holmes, the 19th/20th-century character conceived by Arthur Conan Doyle. It shows how the character has been adapted from literature into the cinematic domain on the basis of three modern TV series, including Dr. House (Heel & Toe Films/Fox, 2004), Sherlock (Hartswood Films/BBC, 2010), and Elementary (Hill of Beans/CBS, 2012). Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in 1887, was originally featured in four novels and 56 short stories. However, since that time Holmes has been adapted for over 240 movies exploiting enormous popularity of this character in a variety of settings. The paper analyzes prototypical, basic features of Sherlock Holmes underlying its intertextual adaptability. As discussed in this study, there are four prototypical features of Sherlock Holmes, i.e. (1) outstanding powers of perception combined with intellect; (2) unconventionality in social behaviour; (3) helpful partner; and (4) ability to use scientific achievements. The paper demonstrates that Sherlock Holmes conceptualized in such a basic manner can act as successfully in modern cinematic productions as it did in late 19th-century literature

Dupin v. France: the ECtHR going old school in its appraisal of inclusive education?

    Get PDF
In Dupin v. France the European Court of Human Rights saw itself confronted with one of the key conflicts in education law: when parents and state officials disagree on which educational trajectory is best for a child with a disability, who gets the final say? This case concerned a mother fighting the decision of the French authorities to refuse her child, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder, access to a general school (through a form of inclusive education). Instead, the child was referred to an ‘Institut medico-éducatif’, an institution established to provide care and a specialized type of education to children with an intellectual impairment. Seemingly going back on its prior case law, the Court did not consider the right to education of the child to be violated

Reading the geographies of post-war British film culture through the reception of French film

    Get PDF
This paper examines the ways in which British specialist film culture anticipated and received the resumed supply of French films at the end of the Second World War. It finds that in serious film journalism and within the rapidly expanding film society movement, new French cinema was the focus of at least as much British attention as Italian neo-realism – the European cinema more famously associated with the era. The paper posits that a number of factors, including anti-Americanism, combined to position the delayed wartime and immediate post-war French releases as a site of impossible expectations and subsequent interpretative difficulty for British cinephiles. In particular, through a case study of the local mediation of French cinema in the English city of Nottingham, this paper considers the role of published criticism for setting the local viewing frame within the provincial film society movement. By tracing the tensions surrounding the circulation of film prints, information, and opinion relating to these prestigious cultural imports, it becomes possible to gain greater insight into both the range of nationally specific meanings attributed to the imported films and the geographic and cultural inequalities at work within the film culture of the country of reception

Distribution of whales (order Cetacea) in Croatian part of the Adriatic sea

Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is the only whale species with a permanent residence in the Croatian part of the Adriatic sea and the Adriatic in general. There are a few more species of the toothed whales and one baleen whale that can occasionally be found in this area, but none with a permanent population. Today, many whales are under the IUCN protection. The Adriatic bottlenose dolphin population is defined as critically endangered and because of this it is also protected by Croatian law. In this work, I presented main whale characteristics, species which can be found in the Adriatic sea, and the methods which are used to get a better insight in their lives and ways in which we can protect them. Considering the fact that many whale species are endangered, it is really important to educate people about the importance of conservation of these as well as the other inhabitants of the sea
