    The Effect of ENSO on Hydrological Structure and Environment in the South Central Coast – Vietnam

    ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) phenomena have impacted on the hydrodynamic regime and environmental factors of the tropical ocean in general. In case of Vietnamese South-Central Waters, impacts of ENSO only focused on issues of changing seasonal wind, seawater temperature anomalies, changing of water masses as the air-sea interaction. Based on several data sets collecting in the period of 2003-2017, new finding of seawater temperature, salinity and environmental factors was identified in the water masses of Vietnamese South-Central Waters. The highest salinity was 35.4 ‰. During the El Nino event, increasing water temperature and salinity caused to move the deeper water masses to be closer to the sea surface than that initial depth in the neutral period. During the La Nina event, the temperature of most water masses reduced by 0.1-3°C, and then these water masses could be affected to the deeper layer. During the phase from strong ENSO event towards the neutral time, nutrient salts of the 4 water masses were lower concentration in the neutral year, causing the lack of phosphorus in sea surface water masses

    A Two-Bit Reflectarray Element Using Cut-Ring Patch Coupled to Delay Lines

    In this paper, a two-bit element for reflectarray applications is presented. The proposed element is based on the cut-ring patch coupled to delay lines through an annular slot. The four states of the reflection phase with a step of 90◦ are achieved with two switches. This reported work is the first step towards the 2-bit active reflectarray element. Prototypes of the element have been fabricated and characterized in X-band using waveguide simulator. Measured results show good characteristics with low magnitude losses and the bandwidth of 1.7-bit resolution is over 5%

    Lattice-based Public Key Encryption with Multi-Ciphertexts Equality Test in Cloud Computing

    Nowadays, together with stormy technology advancement, billions of interconnected devices are constantly collecting data around us. In that fashion, privacy protection has become a major concern. The data must be in encrypted form before being stored on the cloud servers. As a result, the cloud servers are unable to perform calculations on en- crypted data, such as searching and matching keywords. In the PKE- MET setting, a cloud server can perform an equality test on a number of ciphertexts which encrypted with the same designated number. In this paper, we propose, for the first time, an efficient construction of a quantum-safe PKE-MET system based on the hardness of the Learning with Errors (LWE) problem in the lattice setting. Furthermore, we also discuss the first lattice-base public key encryption with flexible multi- ciphertext equality test (PKE-FMET) constructions, which allow per- forming equality test on multiple ciphertexts whose designated numbers are less than a threshold number. Our proposed schemes are proven to be secure in the standard model

    A Large-Scale Study of a Sleep Tracking and Improving Device with Closed-loop and Personalized Real-time Acoustic Stimulation

    Various intervention therapies ranging from pharmaceutical to hi-tech tailored solutions have been available to treat difficulty in falling asleep commonly caused by insomnia in modern life. However, current techniques largely remain ill-suited, ineffective, and unreliable due to their lack of precise real-time sleep tracking, in-time feedback on the therapies, an ability to keep people asleep during the night, and a large-scale effectiveness evaluation. Here, we introduce a novel sleep aid system, called Earable, that can continuously sense multiple head-based physiological signals and simultaneously enable closed-loop auditory stimulation to entrain brain activities in time for effective sleep promotion. We develop the system in a lightweight, comfortable, and user-friendly headband with a comprehensive set of algorithms and dedicated own-designed audio stimuli. We conducted multiple protocols from 883 sleep studies on 377 subjects (241 women, 119 men) wearing either a gold-standard device (PSG), Earable, or both concurrently. We demonstrate that our system achieves (1) a strong correlation (0.89 +/- 0.03) between the physiological signals acquired by Earable and those from the gold-standard PSG, (2) an 87.8 +/- 5.3% agreement on sleep scoring using our automatic real-time sleep staging algorithm with the consensus scored by three sleep technicians, and (3) a successful non-pharmacological stimulation alternative to effectively shorten the duration of sleep falling by 24.1 +/- 0.1 minutes. These results show that the efficacy of Earable exceeds existing techniques in intentions to promote fast falling asleep, track sleep state accurately, and achieve high social acceptance for real-time closed-loop personalized neuromodulation-based home sleep care.Comment: 33 pages, 8 figure

    Eliciting patients’ health concerns in consulting rooms and wards in Vietnamese public hospitals

    This article examines the doctor’s elicitation of the patient’s presenting health concern in two clinical settings in the Vietnamese public hospital system: the consulting room and the ward. The data were taken from 66 audio-recorded consultations. Our analysis shows that the elicitors used by the doctor in the consulting room often communicate a weak epistemic stance towards the patient’s health issue, while those used in the ward tend to signal a strong epistemic stance. In addition, this contrast between the elicitors employed in the consulting room and the ward is evident in our data regardless of whether the consultation is a first visit or a same follow-up (in which the doctor is the same one that treated the patient on their last visit), though the contrast is less clear for different follow-ups (in which the doctor has not treated the patient before). An additional finding is that the clinical setting has some bearing on the use of inappropriate elicitation formats (in which the doctor opens the visit with an elicitor which is more appropriate for another type of visit). The precise way in which each of the consulting room and the ward operates is, of course, a feature of the Vietnamese public hospital system itself. Hence, the overall contrast between the elicitors and elicitation formats used in these two settings illustrates how, on a more general level, the institutional context can have an impact on doctor-patient communication

    Stimulation of shoot regeneration through leaf thin cell layer culture of Passiflora edulis Sims.

    Passiflora edulis Sims. belonged to the genus Passiflora, is one of the important economic crops of the world as well as Vietnam. Nowadays, the commercial P. edulis is mainly propagated by seeds, cuttings and grafting; however, these methods still have some limitations such as genetic degradation and heterogeneity and the spread of pathogenic viruses. Micro-propagation has been used for clonal breeding and disease-free plant breeding, as well as providing a source of materials for Passiflora breeding. In this study, leaf explants of P. edulis Sims. (2.0-month-old) excised from the in vitro culture of ex vitro axillary buds cut longitudinally and transversally into thin cell layers (lTCL and tTCL) were used as plant materials to evaluate the shoot regeneration. In addition, the effects of explant age and lighting condition on shoot regeneration were also investigated. After 8 weeks of culture, the results showed that shoot regeneration rate (100%) and shoot multiplication coefficient (13.33) of the in vitro leaf-tTCL-4 were higher than those of other treatments and control. The shoot regeneration rate of P. edulis Sims. also varied with the change of explant age. The highest shoot regeneration rate (100%) was obtained from leaf explants of 1.5-month-old shoots after 8 weeks of culture. Moreover, the light (fluorescent lamps with photoperiod of 16 hours/day and lighting intensity of 40 - 45 μmol.m-2.s-1) improved not only morphogenesis rate, but also shoot regeneration rate (100%) of leaf explants after 8 weeks of culture.     Synthesis and redetermination of the crystal structure of salicyl-aldehyde <i>N</i>(4)-morpholino-thio-semi-carbazone.

    The structure of the title compound (systematic name: N-{[(2-hy-droxy-phen-yl)methyl-idene]amino}-morpholine-4-carbo-thio-amide), C12H15N3O2S, was prev-iously determined (Koo et al., 1977 ▸) using multiple-film equi-inclination Weissenberg data, but has been redetermined with higher precision to explore its conformation and the hydrogen-bonding patterns and supra-molecular inter-actions. The mol-ecular structure shows intra-molecular O-H⋯N and C-H⋯S inter-actions. The configuration of the C=N bond is E. The mol-ecule is slightly twisted about the central N-N bond. The best planes through the phenyl ring and the morpholino ring make an angle of 43.44 (17)°. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are connected into chains by N-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which combine to generate sheets lying parallel to (002). The most prominent contribution to the surface contacts are H⋯H contacts (51.6%), as concluded from a Hirshfeld surface analysis

    Evaluation Of Allelopathic Potential Of Cissus sicyoides Against the Growth Of Echinochloa Crus-Galli And Some Tested Plants

    Many plant species in nature exert significant allelopathic potential as part of the defense mechanism system, many among their secondary metabolites (allelochemicals), including mineral constituents, which are responsible for the suppression of weeds and enhancing crop yield when directly incorporated into paddy fields. Cissus sicyoides is considered a high-potential allelopathic plant because of its invasion in nature and detected allelochemicals from the plant parts in some studies. The objective of this research was to exploit the allelopathic properties of C.sicyoides against paddy weeds and some indicator plants under laboratory bioassays and greenhouse conditions. The results demonstrated that C. sicyoides had significant inhibition on E. crus-galli, tested plants, and other paddy weeds. In the laboratory conditions, the extracts from C.sicyoides leaves inhibited the growth of Echinochloa crus-galli by 54.3%. The powders from C.sicyoides leaves inhibited the emergence of paddy weeds by approximately 100.0%. In the greenhouse conditions, the powders from C.sicyoides leaves by adding after 3 and 13 days inhibited the growth of E. crus-galli and the emergence of paddy weeds by 64.4%. Remarkably, negligible harmful effects on rice growth were observed. The findings of the study may provide useful information for the exploitation of this plant species to effectively control weeds in the rice fields for sustainable agriculture production

    Isolation and selection of Bacillus strains with high potential probiotic that used in catfish farming (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)

    In this study, we isolated 28 strains of Bacillus spp. from water samples, catfish pond mud samples and earthworm manure (Perionyx excavates). By the cross-streak agar methods, 22 Bacillus strains showed the inhibition ability to Edwardsiella ictaluri, which caused Bacillary Necrosis Pangasius (BNP) in catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). Both Bacillus sp. Q16 and Q111 strains showed the highest inhibition to E. ictaluri by the double-layer agar methods. Finally, two Bacillus strains (Q16, Q111) were selected as a source of potential probiotic because of the ability of extracellular enzyme secretion (protease, amylase, cellulose) strong growth at 0,1-1% salt concentrations, survival within the pH range 6-8, resistance to low pH and low bile salts, inability to produce haemolysin enzyme, sensitivity to eight antibiotics in the three impacting groups (inhibition of wall synthesis, inhibition mechanism of protein synthesis, inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis). Two Bacillus strains (Q16, Q111) were identified that they belong to Bacillus subtilis by biochemical method and 16S rRNA gene sequencing method. This study indicated that two Bacillus strains (Q16, Q111) isolated from catfish pond can be applied as high potential probiotics that used to farm catfish

    A modern purification by accelerated solvent extraction and centrifugal partition chromatography and biological evaluation of capsaicin from Capsicum chinense

    A special alkaloid compound known as capsaicin, which can only be found in the fruit of the Capsicum plant, was isolated and tested for its anti-inflammatory activity. The purpose of this work is to establish a simple and quick approach for capsaicin purification utilizing centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) as well as an effective method - accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), for extracting capsaicin from Capsicum chinense. After purification, capsaicin was validated by HPLC-DAD at 281 nm to be &gt; 90% purity. The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of the isolated capsaicin was also investigated, and the IC50 value of the capsaicin was determined to be 57.61 µg/mL. The current work emphasizes how an ASE and CPC system may combine to extract high-purity capsaicin from Capsicum chinense, which have the anti-inflammatory activity, as we evaluated in the experiment
